Arthur Wood toured three times with Philadelphia (1897, 1903 and 1908) but unlike most of his team-mates he was born in England and only emigrated to the USA when in his 20s, by which time he had already played for Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. In the USA he was considered one of the best batsmen, and on the 1908 tour he topped the averages, making 132 in the opening first-class game.
