Tom Wood averaged over a hundred for Derbyshire's Second XI in 2016, was named as their player of the season and also played some fine innings for the Unicorns representative XI. It was all enough to win him his first senior contract at the end of the 2016 season, but he was released at the end of the following summer.
He was re-signed ahead of the 2020 season and his breakthrough innings came in the 2021 Royal London Cup, when he belted a 55-ball hundred against Nottinghamshire. However, his career was interrupted by a six-month doping ban in 2022, which he received after failing to declare his use of an asthma inhaler. An anti-doping panel and the ECB both accepted that he had not intended to breach the rules.
Wood's ball-striking ability was again on display the following summer, when he hammered a maiden T20 hundred, off 51 balls, to help keep Derbyshire in the running for a Blast quarter-final. But he averaged just 9.00 in the Metro Bank Cup and was again let go on the expiry of his contract.
