A much underestimated player, Brett Swain is a left arm swing bowler currently playing for South Australia in domestic competition. Through a generally unremarkable period for the state team as a whole, Swain's rise from the status of a consistent grade wicket-taker to an impressive interstate performer has rendered him one of South Australia's biggest success stories over recent times. With his medium length run up, smooth action and capacity to swing the ball both ways, he has been quite an asset: a notion to which his first-class record already bears testimony. He is also a more than willing worker, often prepared to shoulder the onerous responsibility for the side of bowling into the wind. While statistically less successful in the limited overs arena, he has also become an increasingly important player in the state's one-day team; his spells of 2/21 and 2/16 from his full quota of overs in the 1997-98 and 1999-2000 Mercantile Mutual Cup semi-finals respectively typical of his capacity to produce valuable performances when most needed. Swain is the grandson of former Test fast bowler, Tim Wall. (John Polack, August 2001)
