West Indies batsman Kirk Edwards on what inspired him most about Viv Richards' batting
India's tours of the West Indies have showcased some of the best Test cricketers from the 1970s through to the 1990s, and though West Indies dominated the contests till recently, the difficult conditions and the strong opposition often brought the best out of India. In 1971, spearheaded by debutant Sunil Gavaskar, India produced one of their most notable Test triumphs at Port of Spain and went on to take the series 1-0. At the forefront of it all was a young Sunil Gavaskar, playing in his first series, whose performances inspired a reggae song to be written about him. Over the next decade it seemed to be Gavaskar and Amarnath against the greatest West Indies line-up as the two sides traded series and records across continents. By 2006 the roles were reversed: West Indies were struggling, India were on the rise and pitches in the Caribbean had lost their sting.
