Abhinav Mukund to take strike, M Vijay at the other end. He needs some runs. Fidel will steam in to three slips and a gully

Just a few minutes before we have action. Enough time to have a look at Sid Ravi's preview. I, Abhishek, will be bringing you ball-by-ball commentary, while Sidharth Monga - who has brought a lot of sanity to the DRS debate - is on the bulletin.

Here is the first comment of the day questioning Darren Sammy's place in the side: "Well no roach on a fast and bouncy barbados wicket. Ppl keep saying Sammy is justifying his place. Well wouldn't roach have been a good option to have?"

James: "Rain at the Oval! Rain in Barbados! I may have to resort to some work!" Blame the cruel weather

Johng is not happy with the West Indies selection: "Fast track or not effectiveness will depend on accuracy which some times eludes a Fidel. I think Roach would have been better for this pitch. He was only a victim of dropped cateches since the Pak series."

Jeff Dujon with the pitch report: "The pitch will have a bit of moisture, it will have consistent bounce, might be a bit steeper early on." Bowl first, he reckons. The track has grass, lots of it, apparently it grew too thick in some areas and they had to shave it off. Bring 'em on, the fast bowlers will be saying.

It is quite cloudy at the moment and rain is forecast throughout the game.

9.35 am West Indies have won the toss and will have a bowl

Darren Sammy: "There is a little moisture here early on, the forecast is for rain. In gloomy conditions, hopefully our swing bowlers can do well."

MS Dhoni, who has a lot of grey in his beard: "Of course (we would have bowled). It would have been good to cash in with a bit of moisture available. I think it will remain throughout the game."

One change for both the sides. Mithun comes in for Mishra and Samuels is in for Nash

9.15 am Hello all, it's time for Test cricket again as we move to Barbados for the second Test between West Indies and India.

In faraway Hong Kong, huge decisions are being taken, the Decision Review System is mandatory now for all games, even those involving India. But then, this won't be the DRS we have been used to.

Associates, who were cruelly dumped out of the 2015 World Cup, are now back. ODI rules have been tweaked; the runner is history, there are two balls in one innings, it's all happening. Meanwhile, there is Test cricket to be played in that erstwhile West Indies citadel, Kensington Oval.

West Indies never lost a Test in Barbados for 59 years, 59. Our stats man, Madhu, tracks their decline here. He says the retirements of a top order that read Greenidge, Haynes and Richards is partly responsible.

India are trying to deal with their usual fast-bowling worries; Munaf Patel bowled in the nets but is not supposed to be fit enough, Praveen Kumar has problems with running on to the danger area, and Abhimanyu Mithun could play only his fourth Test.

That man Harbhajan Singh is on the verge of 400 Test wickets. Now that is a huge number.

0.1

Edwards to Mukund, no run, coming in sharply from around a good length around middle and Mukund works it away to square leg

0.2

Edwards to Mukund, no run, the inward movement in to the left-hander - there was plenty of it for Fidel in Kingston as well - takes this one down the leg side

0.3

Edwards to Mukund, no run, and it happens again, there is lots of carry on this one - and Baugh takes it around shoulder-height

0.4

Edwards to Mukund, no run, gets it right now, floats it up outside off and it goes straight on, Mukund stands tall and leaves

Rev DGA Nichols: "I cannot believe Roach isn't in the side while Sammy is. DJ is taking the place of a batsman or a bowler and is neither. At least Australia was still winning when Mark Taylor was going through his rough patch, which he ended with a 334* and I can't see DJ hitting that many in a year!"

0.5

Edwards to Mukund, no run, takes a step out and shoulders arms to one outside off on a length

0.6

Edwards to Mukund, 1 run, pitched further up and Mukund gets the first runs of this Test, off an inside edge as he tries to drive, gets it backward of square leg - he had issues with driving in the first Test as well - tries to play it a bit squarer

Rampaul will share the new ball

1.1

Rampaul to Mukund, no run, lots of bounce right away, as this one comes in from just short of a length, he was surprised and took it high on the thigh pad

1.2

Rampaul to Mukund, no run, wasted delivery as the inward shape takes it well down leg

1.3

Rampaul to Mukund, OUT, the bounce has struck, and Rampaul is delighted, Mukund has no clue what to do with one that kicks at him from around short of a length, holds the bat out, is hit high on it and the ball lobs up for the simplest of takes to gully

A Mukund c Samuels b Rampaul 1 (7m 9b 0x4 0x6) SR: 11.11

A familiar face walks in at the early fall of the first wicket, there are four slips now

Dhinesh: "While going through Sid's preview, I recollected the 1997 Barbados test from my memory. I was 10 years old at that time and since there was no ESPN network in our village, used to hear the next day morning 6 am All India Radio English News to know the scores. Chasing a vicotry target of 120 and with 2 for no loss as the overnight score, I was eagerly waiting to hear the Indian victory in the next day morning AIR news only to be shell shocked after hearing what happened actually. I was literally crying for the whole morning after hearing the news. Still it hurts."

1.4

Rampaul to Dravid, no run, steepling bounce again, but well outside off and he is able to leave it alone

1.5

Rampaul to Dravid, no run, neat take from Baugh, there was lots of late movement after it pitched way outside off, Baugh took it diving in front of first slip

1.6

Rampaul to Dravid, no run, more bounce, there is going to be more of it, all day, but not making him play and he shoulders arms

2.1

Edwards to Vijay, no run, away shape from the right-hander but miles outside off and easily left alone

2.2

Edwards to Vijay, no run, that is the line, that is the length, that is very well bowled, angled in fuller very close to off and that late shape takes it away, left alone in the end

2.3

Edwards to Vijay, no run, some way further outside off now and Vijay shoulders arms

2.4

Edwards to Vijay, no run, he is on the back foot, understandably so, and Fidel cunningly bowls it fuller and around middle, he is late in coming forward but manages to play it out to forward short leg

2.5

Edwards to Vijay, 1 run, more variety from Edwards, this one is a lot straighter, and zips away from a length, he gets behind it to defend on the off side

2.6

Edwards to Dravid, 1 run, gets one on the pads and sends it with a wristy flick to long leg

3.1

Rampaul to Dravid, no run, left alone outside off stump, there is that bounce again

3.2

Rampaul to Dravid, 2 runs, Vijay lives on, Dravid square drives, gully stops with a dive, backward point can't find the stumps though, the throw is really weak and off-target, Vijay had no chance of making it back, they even get some overthrows

3.3

Rampaul to Dravid, no run, superb delivery and well left, close to off stump and taking off, Dravid is able to leave

3.4

Rampaul to Dravid, no run, away swing now, but too far outside off stump

3.5

Rampaul to Dravid, no run, lovely ball, swing from the perfect line, has him pushing at one close to off, had to do that, it was too close to be left alone, beaten

4.1

Edwards to Vijay, no run, phew, this is some examination for Vijay, another one from Fidel comes screaming at his throat, he does well to sway out of the line, one gone, several to go

4.2

Edwards to Vijay, no run, there is another one, but it does not get up that much, Vijay drops the wrists even further to watch it go by

4.3

Edwards to Vijay, no run, hangs his bat at this one, quite some distance outside off, but the angle brings it in initially and the natural response from the batsman is to go pushing, and then it moves away late, lovely

4.4

Edwards to Vijay, no run, pushed away on the off side off the front foot

4.5

Edwards to Vijay, 1 run, goes on the back foot and manages to tuck it down in front of forward short leg and it trickles past him

Rampaul to Vijay, no run, takes it on the thigh as this one bounces from back of a length

5.2

Rampaul to Vijay, no run, that has to be one of the balls of the morning, there have been quite a few on this helpful wicket, drawing the batsman forward with a very full length and then that shape, that lovely away shape, can't do anything with those, beaten completely

5.3

Rampaul to Vijay, no run, a touch wider and left alone outside off

5.4

Rampaul to Vijay, no run, this one comes in straight on, after all those that have zipped away, must be quite a change for the batsman, Vijay goes back and blocks nicely

5.5

Rampaul to Vijay, no run, he likes the zip on the track and tests it out with a shortish one, the angle takes it down leg

5.6

Rampaul to Vijay, no run, solidly blocked by Vijay, gets half-forward, head on top of straightening ball and it is smothered on the wicket

6.2

Edwards to Dravid, no run, on a length but a foot outside off, not making him play and Dravid likes that early on in his innings, leaves it happily

6.3

Edwards to Dravid, no run, Fidel is wasting the new ball on this bowling beauty, still further outside off and moving away, more leaving from Dravid

Short leg goes towards short extra cover

6.4

Edwards to Dravid, no run, goes back to one that makes him play, finally, and defends down the track

6.5

Edwards to Dravid, no run, whoa, low full toss has Dravid in some bother, curls in and curves away in boomerang fashion. Dravid tries to jab it away, it takes the edge and bounces after it has passed the stumps

6.6

7.2

Rampaul to Vijay, no run, climber close to off, he gets on top of it and runs it to gullly

7.3

Rampaul to Vijay, no run, there is the fuller length and right away, Vijay is in trouble, gets forward looking to push it away and is beaten by generous away movement

7.4

Rampaul to Vijay, no run, reverts to back of a length and though there is movement, he is able to leave it alone outside off

7.5

Rampaul to Vijay, no run, and again, Sammy will not be happy with this, his fast bowlers are not making the Indians play, Vijay neatly shoulders arms again to a back of a length ball

7.6

Rampaul to Vijay, no run, has to play at this straighter and fuller one and there is the outside edge, but he pushed at it softly and it runs away towards gully

8.4

Sammy to Vijay, no run, Sammy's turn to bowl it some way outside off and it is left alone

Rampaul is back

25.1

Rampaul to Vijay, OUT, that is the end of Vijay''s long vigil, soft dismissal, strangled down the leg side, he was looking to get out of the way of one that climbed sharply, but it took the glove on its way to Baugh and Rampaul has struck right away with extra bounce, Vijay is disappointed, he tried to grind it out and looked to be in control mostly

M Vijay c †Baugh b Rampaul 11 (113m 75b 0x4 0x6) SR: 14.66

Virat Kohli comes in, this will be a test, a big one

25.2

Rampaul to Kohli, no run, gives him a back of a length ball and he goes back to defend it carefully

25.3

Rampaul to Kohli, OUT, Rampaul has taken off, his team-mates rush after him, Virat has been bounced out, nothing shot, nothing at all actually, just caught on the crease shuffling across, he was probably expecting the bouncer as he was crouching a tad, instead Rampaul gets it to shoot off from back of a length and straighten as well, and before Virat could do anything, the ball had taken the glove and lobbed high to second slip

V Kohli c Sammy b Rampaul 0 (1m 2b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

Dave, no guesses who he is supporting: "I suspect Tremlett is busy phoning the Test Groundsmen around England at present repeating his request for bouncy pitches for the coming series at the moment." Bishoo to bowl the last over before lunch

26.1

Bishoo to Laxman, FOUR, starts with a half tracker and Laxman rocks back to dismiss it with a big pull wide of midwicket

26.3

26.5

Bishoo to Laxman, no run, nicely forward to smother a flatter one

26.6

Bishoo to Laxman, no run, ends the session with a drive to extra cover off a fuller one

3 for 4, read Ravi Rampaul's figures and that also tells the story of the session. Barbados has bounced, seamed, swung and in general made survival difficult for the Indian batsmen. Already four of them have fallen to deliveries that have got big on them, and more of the same is to follow after lunch. Join us in around 30 minutes, even as the pitch is being covered as lighting and thunder threaten in the distance

Karthik in response to Dave: "You do realise that England have to bat on those pitches as well, this thing about swinging pitches with India is getting blown completely out of proportion."

This should do it for the moment on the next series, which admittedly should be a cracker. Back to post-lunch action, Sammy rubs the ball on his trousers even as Raina walks in to face the fire. VVS saunters down the steps leisurely.

Rohit: "@Josh: Really? What happened when the ball was swinging in Nottingham in 2007? English batsmen dint seem to know how to play the swinging ball then."

Josh: "@Karthik: Are you honestly suggesting the Indians play English conditions better than we do? We love the ball swinging out of the hand or onto the bat. If an Asian team had to play half their test matches in England their recent history would have panned out very differently."

sudip: "On this point about Indian batsmen and bouncy pitches. The top six against England is likely to be very different to this one with only Dravid and Laxman certainties."

27.1

Rampaul to Raina, no run, short ball right away after lunch, though without much venom, Rampaul just settling in, Raina goes on his toes to bring it down

27.2

27.4

Rampaul to Raina, no run, played out to forward short leg without fuss this time

27.5

Rampaul to Raina, FOUR, Raina survives and gets one back, rocked back quickly as he saw this one pitch short and got on top to send it scurrying past midwicket with a furious pull

27.6

Sriram: "85-6..looked much worst."

29.1

Rampaul to Laxman, 2 runs, VVS whips pleasingly and collects a couple down the ground as mid on pulls it back, this outfield is really slow, know what would have sped on it? Only a tracer bullet

29.2

Rampaul to Laxman, FOUR, even better, stands in the crease, goes deep and opens the face to guide a shortish one past backward point

29.3

Rampaul to Laxman, no run, allows one to come on with the angle and bends to defend it

Rakesh: "Looking at the way he is judging the length of the deliveries, I wonder if he's Sure-sh Raina playing or Unsure-sh Raina!"

29.4

Rampaul to Laxman, FOUR, another boundary for VVS, this one is a gift and on this track even more so, full down the leg side and he flicks it to the long leg boundary

30.3

Sammy to Raina, no run, eep, Raina looked to go after this one again, it jagged away after pitching short and his attempted slog-pull found nothing

30.4

Sammy to Raina, no run, better from Raina, stays in the crease and pushes one away on the off side

Arvind: "I feel the Indian players/selectors should get a perspective and send the upcoming players like Kohli/Vijay to a couple of county seasons, that would help them in handling swing and bounce in the longer formats. Even if they play 200 ODIs overseas, it wont be the same as playing a longer version. So in the better interests of the team, these players need to be exposed to swing/bounce before they can really start doing well."

30.5

Sammy to Raina, no run, left well alone as it is angled outside off

30.6
