South Africa in West Indies ODI Series - 5th ODI

West Indies v South Africa

South Africa won by 1 wicket (with 2 balls remaining)

Time for action then! Will Gayle finally explode? I am sure hoping he does. Boucher is not keeping, I don't recall the last time he played as a specialist batsman. A clear sign of the future this. AB continues to don the big gloves. Langeveldt has the ball.

Gayle: "We are getting close, which shows we are capable of winning games. Want to give the spectators something to cheer about and then go on to the Test series."

Smith: "Will be fantastic to make it 5-0. Big job ahead, it is a dry wicket and we need to bat last. Hopefully it will last a 100 overs." Smith's got a really close haircut too. A smart thing to do in the hot and humid Caribbean.

There was talk of rain and thundershowers, but no sign of that now. The sun is out in all its glory, so things look good in Trinidad, but that said, I'm not one to bet against the fickle Carribbean weather.

West Indies have won the toss and will bat first. Both teams have made two changes each. Benn and Rampaul are out for the hosts; Deonarine and Taylor come in. Benn has been dropped following that infamous fracas with Chris Gayle in game 4. Rampaul is resting with knee injury.

South Africa have left out Morkel, and David Miller is out with an ankle injury. Roelof van der Merwe and Mark Boucher come in, so it is likely AB de Villiers will relinquish the big gloves.

A warm welcome to the fifth and final ODI between West Indies and South Africa - a chance for the hosts to regain some confidence and restore lost pride; a chance for the visitors to carry on the winning momentum into the Tests. West Indies have gone down twice 0-5 in recent home ODI series against South Africa, and will do all they can to reverse that trend today.

I am Nitin Sundar, your commentator for the day. Gopi Rangarajan and Venkat Raghav are on scoring duties.

0.1

Langeveldt to Richards, 1 wide, short slow wide loosener well outside off to start off proceedings

0.1

Langeveldt to Richards, no run, straighter this time, touch of away movement from back of a length, cut away and fielded well by a diving Duminy at point

0.2

Langeveldt to Richards, no run, pitched up on middle and driven hard back down the track, Langeveldt puts out his right hand and saves a few runs

0.3

Langeveldt to Richards, no run, full and tailing in onto the pads, Richards misses the expansive flick

0.4

Langeveldt to Richards, no run, shifts the radar back outside off and shortens the length, jags back in and Richards plays it off the backfoot to the off side

0.5

Langeveldt to Richards, FOUR, strays on to Richards' hips from short of a length and he cashes in with a delicate glance that races away very fine for the first four of the day

0.6

Langeveldt to Richards, no run, and back to normal service to finish off the over, darting in off the seam from outside off, defended off the back foot.

End of over 1 (5 runs) West Indies 5/0 (RR: 5.00)

Tsotsobe has the ball. Gayle surveys the gaps.

1.1

Tsotsobe to Gayle, 1 run, hint of away movement from the left-armer from over the wicket, squares up Gayle marginally but he runs it off the face down to third man

1.2

Tsotsobe to Richards, no run, defends the length ball, angling across, into the covers

1.3

Tsotsobe to Richards, no run, fuller and Richards brings out the expansive cover drive, but does not make contact

1.4

Tsotsobe to Richards, no run, straightens the length, on middle stump and driven back compactly to the bowler

1.5

Tsotsobe to Richards, 1 run, short ball on leg stump, nudged away into the leg side off the backfoot. They contemplate risking a second, and correctly decide against it

1.6

Tsotsobe to Gayle, no run, not much pace, 80.5 mph, but good length and line to keep Gayle on the backfoot outside off, and he defends it down the ground.

End of over 2 (2 runs) West Indies 7/0 (RR: 3.50)

2.1

Langeveldt to Richards, no run, again back of a length from Langeveldt, cutting in and defended off the back foot

2.2

Langeveldt to Richards, no run, good steady bowling this, straightens the line a touch, but does not let Richards come forward at all. Blocked

2.3

Langeveldt to Richards, FOUR, and that's what Richards is waiting for, and like in the first over, Langeveldt offers one hit-me ball, sliding on to his hips at 85 mph, which he gladly hoicks behind square leg for four

2.4

Langeveldt to Richards, 2 runs, repeats the error, but this time Richards can't get it fine enough and it is fielded at square leg as they pick two

2.5

Langeveldt to Richards, 1 run, short ball, elicits the pull and he does not time it at all, runs into midwicket for a single

First ever time this that Boucher is not keeping wickets, while playing for SA, in his 292-ODI career. Add in all the Tests and T20s. He must be feeling very weird.

2.6

Langeveldt to Gayle, no run, Outside off and Gayle lets it go without fuss

End of over 3 (7 runs) West Indies 14/0 (RR: 4.66)
CH Gayle    1* (3b)      CK Langeveldt    2-0-12-0

3.1

Tsotsobe to Richards, no run, slowish, back-of-a-length outside off and check-driven down the pitch

3.2

Tsotsobe to Richards, SIX, super shot! Slow again from Tsotsobe but it is pitched up and he does not get much movement. Richards goes forward gets underneath the ball and lofts it high over cover

3.3

Tsotsobe to Richards, 1 run, short and angling across, upper cut nicely down to third man where Boucher dives acrobatically, as you would expect him to, to save the boundary and then sends in a horror throw.

3.4

Tsotsobe to Gayle, no run, another leave by Gayle outside off. Hmm.

3.5

Tsotsobe to Gayle, 1 run, short of a length, tip and run off the backfoot, and Ryan McLaren misses the direct hit which would have consumed Richards. Unnecessary risk that.

3.6

Tsotsobe to Richards, OUT, Richards does not make much use of the reprieve. Tsotsobe changes the angle and comes in from round the stumps, pings it in short of a length outside off, and Richards dangles the bat like he were fishing in high-tide. The edge flies into the broad presence of Kallis at first slip and he tumbles behind after pouching it

Colonel Chanders is the new man in. West Indies need this man to rediscover his form. Whaddaplaya!

4.1

Langeveldt to Gayle, 1 run, back of a length outside off, Gayle stays back and angles the bat to run it down to third man

4.2

Langeveldt to Chanderpaul, no run, welcomes him with a looping bouncer at 84 mph, lets it go

4.3

Langeveldt to Chanderpaul, no run, tight line and the perfect length, at a good enough pace - again 85 mph - and Chanders defends off the back foot into the off side

4.4

Langeveldt to Chanderpaul, no run, again, length ball on off stump, but Chanders stays back and defends

4.5

Langeveldt to Chanderpaul, no run, beautiful short ball, kicking up off short of good length, and Chanders sways to the leg side to avoid it

4.6

Langeveldt to Chanderpaul, no run, more chin music, Chanders rises high and glove-handles it down to the leg side. Nice couple of bouncers from Charl

5.1

Tsotsobe to Gayle, 1 run, finally Gayle is sucked into a shot of intent outside off, it was a slow bouncer and he rocked back, stayed on his toes and cut it behind square

5.2

Tsotsobe to Chanderpaul, no run, length ball, drawing Chanderpaul forward outside off and he defends it back down the track

5.3

Tsotsobe to Chanderpaul, no run, pitched well up and driven without much intent or timing to mid off, off the front foot

5.4

Tsotsobe to Chanderpaul, no run, drifts on to the leg stump, Chanders gets inside the line but does not capitalise, and defends it to short midwicket

5.5

Tsotsobe to Chanderpaul, no run, slower ball, back of a length outside off, Chanders looks for a tip-and-run to get going, but point swoops on to it.

5.6

Tsotsobe to Chanderpaul, no run, ditto. This time, Tsotsobe rolls his fingers across it for a gentle off cutter, and he pats it off back foot to short cover

End of over 6 (1 run) West Indies 24/1 (RR: 4.00)

6.1

Langeveldt to Gayle, 1 run, back of a length, outside off, Gayle rises high and forces it down the ground between straight and mid off for a single

6.2

Langeveldt to Chanderpaul, no run, blobk block block from Chanderpaul, stays back and defends to the off side

6.3

Langeveldt to Chanderpaul, no run, and again, that one cuts in marginally off the seam and Chanderpaul can't pierce the off side field. Not much timing either

6.4

Langeveldt to Chanderpaul, no run, slower ball, turning from leg to off and Chanderpaul tries desperately to force it to the leg side, but it dribbles across to mid on

6.5

Langeveldt to Chanderpaul, no run, another slower ball, Chanderpaul picks it, but cannot do much, and defends tamely to the leg side. Pressure.

6.6

Langeveldt to Chanderpaul, 1 wide, similar slower ball attempted, but this time it slips down the legside for a wide

6.6

Langeveldt to Chanderpaul, no run, and he's STILL on 0. Another slower ball, the Saffers have guaged this pitch well, spins across at a gentle pace and is short, and Chanderpaul can't time or place the cut

End of over 7 (2 runs) West Indies 26/1 (RR: 3.71)

CH Gayle    5* (8b)      LL Tsotsobe    3-0-11-1

7.1

Tsotsobe to Gayle, no run, full on Gayle, defended straight to mid on

7.2

Tsotsobe to Gayle, FOUR, seeyalater! Short ball angles into Gayle and he stays back, goes on one leg, and pulls him disdainfully behind square for four

7.3

Tsotsobe to Gayle, 1 run, good running, this was on off stump line, Gayle played it softly to the off side and took off. Over to Chanders

7.4

Tsotsobe to Chanderpaul, 2 runs, there's a roar of relief and mock-appreciation from the Triniposse as Chanders flicks it to square leg to get off the mark.. Finally..

7.5

Tsotsobe to Chanderpaul, FOUR, and now he's up and running! Pitched up and now Chanders has the confidence to come forward and coax it wide of mid off, along the carpet into the boundary

7.6

Tsotsobe to Chanderpaul, no run, shortens the length and Chanders looks to punch it through the covers, but can't pierce the cordon

End of over 8 (11 runs) West Indies 37/1 (RR: 4.62)

Ryan McLaren comes on.

8.1

McLaren to Gayle, no run, good line and length to begin, angles across the left hander from over the wicket and Gayle shoulders arms

8.2

McLaren to Gayle, no run, didn't take long for him to bowl the slower ball, ill-directed though, on Gayle's pads, and he flicks straight to the only fielder he had to elude - short fine leg

8.3

McLaren to Gayle, 1 run, shortens the length, Gayle hangs back and taps it towards midwicket for one

8.4

McLaren to Chanderpaul, no run, length ball, angles across, pitches on middle and is played by Chanders outside off, coming forward, towards cover

8.5

McLaren to Chanderpaul, no run, no pace at all on the pitch, won't get easier as the game progresses. Chanders plays the back of length ball into the off side, but can't get it off the square

8.6

McLaren to Chanderpaul, 1 run, leans forward into the drive, and it goes quickly, just wide enough of cover for them to steal one before the fielder tidies up

Kallis comes on.

9.1

Kallis to Chanderpaul, 1 run, slow off cutter, nudged away off the back foot to square leg.

9.2

Kallis to Gayle, 1 run, pitched up on middle and off, driven by Gayle towards wide mid off for one

9.3

Kallis to Chanderpaul, 2 runs, very short bouncer, Chanders had to bring the bat down almost from above his head to control the pull and send it hurtling across to long leg, where Roelof van der Merwe runs across from fine leg and effects a fine save. As they would say on tv - "Good cricket all round".

9.4

Kallis to Chanderpaul, no run, pitched up on off stump, defended safely down the track

9.5

Kallis to Chanderpaul, 1 run, spots the off-cutter slower ball again, and plays it with the 'spin' towards wide mid off

9.6

Kallis to Gayle, no run, surprise surprise, another slower ball, dead-batted by Gayle back to the bowler.

End of over 10 (5 runs) West Indies 44/1 (RR: 4.40)
CH Gayle    12* (16b 1x4)      JH Kallis    1-0-5-0
S Chanderpaul    11* (25b 1x4)      R McLaren    1-0-2-0

Good start from both sides, given the circumstances. Meanwhile India have slumped to a disastrous defeat against Zim. They deserved no better after an excruciatingly boring and unimaginably daft batting effort.

10.1

McLaren to Chanderpaul, no run, back of a length, cutting from middle to off, check-driven off the backfoot into the covers

10.2

McLaren to Chanderpaul, 1 run, length ball this time, similar line, Chanders presses forward but can't get much momentum into his drive into the covers. Gets a single

10.3

McLaren to Gayle, no run, another off cutter, get ready for many of these today. Gayle stays back and opens the face to send it to point

10.4

McLaren to Gayle, no run, faster and fuller, on leg and middle, but Gayle does not cash in, flick-drives straight to midwicket

10.5

McLaren to Gayle, OUT, gone. As is often the case, a period of good bowling is followed by a soft dismissal off a not so good ball. Very short and looping outside off, the lack of pace makes Gayle pull rather than cut, and the uncontrolled shot carries easily to Smith at mid on, whose reaction suggests that it was a planned dismissal. Good on the South Africans.

Bravo walks out. The Darren version.

10.6

McLaren to DM Bravo, no run, shades of Lara as always from Darren, crouches, springs on to his feet and defends the back-of-length ball to the offside

Elliott Cornish: "I know Chris Gayle says his team can't rely on him, but in the seven innings he has had in the tour he hasn't hit one fifty. How much longer before people will start to question his form?" Meanwhile, Botha comes on.

11.1

Botha to Chanderpaul, 1 run, oh, what have we here! Slow tossed up offie, that Chanders defends to point and he sets off for a suicidal single. The throw came in to Botha, with Chanders still having miles to go, and he seemed to have given up, but inexplicably, Botha was well in front of the stumps, with no idea of where the sticks were, and took an eternity to finally break the stumps. Chanders made it in the meantime. Phew.

11.2

Botha to DM Bravo, 1 run, tapped into the off side for a more conservative single

11.3

Botha to Chanderpaul, no run, tossed up on off and driven back to the bowler

11.4

Botha to Chanderpaul, 1 run, fidgety Chanders chips down the track and flicks it on the pitch to midwicket

11.5

Botha to DM Bravo, no run, man, I am having serious visions of Lara here, tossed up on off, and defended imperiously to the off side.

11.6

Botha to DM Bravo, no run, shortens the length, he smothers the spin and opens the face to run it into the off side

End of over 12 (3 runs) West Indies 48/2 (RR: 4.00)
DM Bravo    1* (4b)      J Botha    1-0-3-0
S Chanderpaul    14* (30b 1x4)      R McLaren    2-0-3-1

Costly miss that by Botha. Geez, what's with fielders getting in front of the stumps, instead of staying behind when they are taking a throw?!

12.1

McLaren to Chanderpaul, no run, back of a length, drawing Chanders forward, defends to mid on

12.2

McLaren to Chanderpaul, no run, angles across to the off side, Chanders opens the face and guides it well, but... straight to point

12.3

McLaren to Chanderpaul, FOUR, Did not have the length to drive, nor the pace or bounce to punch, yet he got forward, manufactured an off drive straight down the ground. Timed the way only few men in the world can, and Chanders is one of them.

12.4

McLaren to Chanderpaul, FOUR, this one's easier, short and wide enough for him to latch on with a clever little cut shot bisecting the fielders in the circle square of the wicket.

And now Chanders makes a hole at the crease with a bail. You gotta love this guy!

12.5

McLaren to Chanderpaul, no run, short of a length, angling in from round the wicket, played without the intention of scoring to midwicket

12.6

McLaren to Chanderpaul, no run, back to short of a length, Chanders stays back and tries to drive through the covers, but can't find the gap

End of over 13 (8 runs) West Indies 56/2 (RR: 4.30)

13.1

13.2

Botha to DM Bravo, no run, better line, Darren comes forward and blocks

13.3

Botha to DM Bravo, no run, defended again, from back of a length

13.4

Botha to DM Bravo, no run, shortens the length, he stays back and cuts it to point

13.5

Botha to DM Bravo, no run

13.6

Botha to DM Bravo, 1 run, tossed well up and driven comfortably to long off. If Darren Bravo, who bats like Lara, can bat half as well as Lara, good times are ahead for the Windies.

14.3

McLaren to DM Bravo, 1 run, off cutter on middle and off, Darren picks the variation and runs it down to third man for one

14.4

McLaren to Chanderpaul, no run, angles into Chanders and he defends it safely back to the bowler

14.5

McLaren to Chanderpaul, no run, Duminy continues to dominate with his fielding skills at point! Short and wide, Chanders latches on to it with a fierce cut, but Duminy leaps across and saves a few

Antonio: "Everyone keeps talking abt Adrian Bharath as the next big savior of West Indies cricket......Adrian while he has undisputed talent does not have the patience needed to mantain consistency as was evident in Austrialia where besides that fabulous 100 he made no other score of worth. He is like Dwayne smith who made a wonderful hundred and was hailed as something special but petered out to nothing spectacular. Adrian must show he can be consistent in regional cricket before he is automatically included in West Indies squads."

Trivia of the day from Aaron: "Just by the way ... Today's public holiday in Trinidad & Tobago is known as 'Corpus Christi'. The popular local tradition is to plant crops on this day, i wonder why ... rain almost assured to fall and is expected to germinate the seed and the crops thrive well and yield bountifully..."

41.1

Tsotsobe to Deonarine, no run, short ball outside off, Deo cuts it away to point

Keupke: "Strange nicknames. Deo, Chanders - what are they, Etonians?" Well, they are long-named West Indians. I'd rather get the descriptions in than spend time typing out their names in full!

41.2

Tsotsobe to Deonarine, 1 wide, great save down the leg side by AB standing up!

41.2

Tsotsobe to Deonarine, 2 runs, short of a length, Deo goes down on one knee and shovels it into midwicket region for a couple

41.3

Tsotsobe to Deonarine, 1 run, goes wider outside off, Deo looks to cut but can't evade cover

41.4

Tsotsobe to Pollard, no run, slower ball this time, similar to the one that got Bravo - call it what you wat, off or leg cutter - defended safely

41.5

Tsotsobe to Pollard, 1 run, played away to the leg side for another single. Boundaries are just not happening.

41.6

Tsotsobe to Deonarine, 1 run, tails in on Deo's pads, he flicks away towards midwicket

End of over 42 (6 runs) West Indies 170/5 (RR: 4.04)
N Deonarine    19* (24b 1x6)      LL Tsotsobe    7-1-31-2
KA Pollard    3* (7b)      CK Langeveldt    5-0-17-0

Keupke: "OK, Deo and Chanders - how about Polly, Daley and Galey (though he is more a light breeze these days), Tailey and Rammers? The Bravo boys dont need any, I reckon." Ye mate, will keep these suggestions in mind. Quite handy! Batting Powerplay taken. Go Puhhlaarrdddd!!!

42.1

Langeveldt to Deonarine, no run, swing and a miss outside off, short of a length, it was there to be hit, Deo backed away, and went for the expansive carve over cover, but cricket for him is a no-contact sport.

42.2

Langeveldt to Deonarine, 1 run, pulled away well, but straight to deep square leg

42.3

Langeveldt to Pollard, 1 run, short of a length outside off, Pollard looks to climb into it, and scythes it across towards midwicket, but the timing was a touch off-key

42.4

Langeveldt to Deonarine, FOUR, super shot! Another short one, this time Deonarine got into position early enough and played late enough to beat long leg, where Duminy put in a dive, but could not haul it in

42.5

Langeveldt to Deonarine, FOUR, four more! Good ball, perfect yorker following Deonarine's movement to the leg side, but he managed to squeeze it between his toes and the bat, very fine on the leg side

42.6

Langeveldt to Deonarine, 1 run, bowls this outside off, enough room for Deonarine to drive it powerfully, but he finds the fielder at wide mid on

End of over 43 (11 runs) West Indies 181/5 (RR: 4.20)
N Deonarine    29* (29b 2x4 1x6)      CK Langeveldt    6-0-28-0
KA Pollard    4* (8b)      LL Tsotsobe    7-1-31-2

43.1

McLaren to Deonarine, 1 wide, slides well down the leg, confused by Deonarine who is running all over the crease

43.1

McLaren to Deonarine, 1 run, yorker on off stump, Deonarine tries to get under it but cannot, drives it straight to mid off

43.2

McLaren to Pollard, 1 run, overpitched outside off and drilled to Smith at mid off, who again relay-throws to cover even as he tumbles after fielding

Long off is pushed back. Third man and fine leg come in.

43.3

McLaren to Deonarine, 1 run, nudged away the short ball on leg stump behind square leg for one

43.4

McLaren to Pollard, FOUR, Smash. Short ball, Pollard has been threatening to break loose for a while, picked the length early and whacked the cover off that one. Tsotsobe at square leg inside the circle did a good job not touching the ball, else he too would have ended up at the long leg boundary

43.5

McLaren to Pollard, 1 run, full this time, driven hard to mid off for one.

43.6

McLaren to Deonarine, no run, full toss on leg stump, Deonarine charges all over the place, ends up getting outside the line and plays all around it.. for no run

End of over 44 (9 runs) West Indies 190/5 (RR: 4.31)
N Deonarine    31* (32b 2x4 1x6)      R McLaren    5-0-22-1
KA Pollard    10* (11b 1x4)      CK Langeveldt    6-0-28-0

44.1

Langeveldt to Pollard, 1 run, nice juicy half-volley on middle stump, Pollard looks to deposit it over the straight boundary, but the bottom hand ruins the timing and it rolls away to wide long off

44.2

Langeveldt to Deonarine, no run, angles in from wide of the crease, and Deonarine does not try to hit it. Defended back to the bowler

44.3

Langeveldt to Deonarine, 1 run, full slower ball on leg stump, Deonarine cannot capitalise and drives it hard, down to long on

44.4

Langeveldt to Pollard, 1 run, again. Pollard's bottom hand dominates his bat swing and the attempted loft-drive down the ground goes on side rather than straight

44.5

Langeveldt to Deonarine, 1 run, Deonarine moves to the leg side, makes room and guides it behind point

44.6

Langeveldt to Pollard, SIX, seeya later Mr. Charl Langeveldt! Pollard picks that full toss long before it gets to him, stays back in the crease and lofts it high over midwicket. The sound the ball made on contact with the bat was akin to a hundred champagne bottles popping together at the exact same instant. Crisp Thwopck!

End of over 45 (10 runs) West Indies 200/5 (RR: 4.44)
KA Pollard    18* (14b 1x4 1x6)      CK Langeveldt    7-0-38-0
N Deonarine    33* (35b 2x4 1x6)      R McLaren    5-0-22-1

45.1

McLaren to Deonarine, 1 leg bye, yorker wide of leg stump, gets some boot on it to square leg for a leg bye

45.2

McLaren to Pollard, SIX, Wah! Length ball at this stage of the innings is meat and drink for Pollard who bends his knees to get under it and send it flying away to Jamaica where this match was originally scheduled to be held. What a hit!

45.3

McLaren to Pollard, 1 run, and now he guides it to the off side for a single. Good batting - hope he does not fall in the nervous 20-30s today

45.4

McLaren to Deonarine, 2 runs, yorker on Deonarine's pads, he does well to flick it well into the gap at midwicket and they charge across for two more

45.5

McLaren to Deonarine, 1 wide, slower ball, gone awry again confused by a rampantly non-stationary Deonarine, who ends up at the 9th stump on the leg stump and the ball was even wider of him

45.5

McLaren to Deonarine, 1 run, full on the boots this time, and Deonarine pings long on with a hard drive

45.6

McLaren to Pollard, no run, very slow slower ball, Pollard missed it by a week and it bounced a second time before AB collected it

End of over 46 (12 runs) West Indies 212/5 (RR: 4.60)
KA Pollard    25* (17b 1x4 2x6)      R McLaren    6-0-33-1
N Deonarine    36* (38b 2x4 1x6)      CK Langeveldt    7-0-38-0

Daniel: "Come on Pollard, forget dat ur in Port of Spain... think as if ur in Mumbai wearing da blue kit and start smacking them.." Indeed!

46.1

Kallis to Deonarine, FOUR, wow! Deonarine pulls out the shovel-scoop to the full toss outside leg and redirects it to fine leg. Rustic elegance to that agricultural shot!

46.2

Kallis to Deonarine, 2 runs, opens up the off side, and drives hard down to long off where Duminy eddects a smart tumble and save

46.3

Kallis to Deonarine, 1 run, finally gets the yorker right, and Deonarine can't do much except drive down feebly to mid on

46.4

Kallis to Pollard, no run, ah, Pollard was setting himself up for an on-side whack, and Kallis outwitted him with a full ball outside off, which Pollard could not make contact with

46.5

Kallis to Pollard, OUT, anti-climax.. That was not a slower ball, it was a full toss on off stump, asking to be tonked, but Pollard for some reason was early into the shot and ended up spooning it feebly towards extra cover for a simple catch. Ah, well.. nervous in the 20s again.

KA Pollard c Smith b Kallis 25 (19b 1x4 2x6) SR: 131.57

46.6

Kallis to Deonarine, 1 run, full toss on middle and leg, driven out to long on

Gopal: "At the end of this game, SC Chanderpaul and DL Haynes share the second place with 8648 runs amongst the most run getters for West Indies in one day games. BC Lara with 10348 runs holds the first place." There you go - another milestone.

End of over 47 (8 runs) West Indies 220/6 (RR: 4.68)
N Deonarine    44* (42b 3x4 1x6)      JH Kallis    5-0-30-1
DJG Sammy    0* (0b)      R McLaren    6-0-33-1

47.1

McLaren to Deonarine, 1 run, length ball outside leg, flicked away to square leg where Amla tidies up

47.2

McLaren to Sammy, 1 wide, offcutter gone awry.. slides down the leg for a wide.

47.2

McLaren to Sammy, 1 run, length ball outside off, and driven hard out to deep extra cover

47.3

McLaren to Deonarine, no run, ah, full ball, driven back, deflected by McLaren on to the stumps, but the non-striker managed to get back on time

47.4

McLaren to Deonarine, 1 wide, well, the McLaren Merc is going wide of the driveway here.. Another wide down the leg

47.4

McLaren to Deonarine, 1 run, on leg stump, Deonarine looks for the big flick, but can't time it too well and it bounces away to deep midwicket

47.5

McLaren to Sammy, FOUR, Tonk! Over-pitched on leg stump, perfect for Sammy to drill straight down the ground, tremendous timing and he shows the full face of the bat, and holds the pose. The sponsor will be happy.

47.6

McLaren to Sammy, FOUR, and again! Different line, but same length, so Sammy redirects his effort towards extra-cover. Gets under it and smacks it, and holds the pose after a hint of follow through.

End of over 48 (13 runs) West Indies 233/6 (RR: 4.85)
DJG Sammy    9* (3b 2x4)      R McLaren    7-0-46-1
N Deonarine    46* (45b 3x4 1x6)      JH Kallis    5-0-30-1

48.1

Kallis to Deonarine, 1 run, full toss and Deonarine does the smart thing. Drives down to long on, goes to the non-striker's end and watches the fun.

48.2

Kallis to Sammy, 1 run, high full toss outside off and Sammy was beside himself, like a child facing a box of chocolates who does not know what to do and in his eagerness, spills the stuff. Half-biffs it down to long on for a single

48.3

Kallis to Deonarine, 1 no ball, that's slipped and beamed over head height. No Ball. No free hit

48.3

Kallis to Deonarine, 2 runs, punched hard down the ground, where long on does a good job, but Duminy botches the relay throw and concedes two

48.4

Kallis to Deonarine, 2 runs, full again, driven hard and straight by Deonarine who reaches fifty, well played!

48.5

Kallis to Deonarine, 1 run, attempted yorker, over pitched on leg stump, flicked straight to square leg

48.6

Kallis to Sammy, no run, smartly bowled, testing the tram lines outside off stump, but staying just in, enough got Harper to deem it legitimate. Sammy could not reach it and that ends the over.

Elaborator: "Talking of milestones: You missed Deonarine's 500th run - unpardonable error, considering he's the best WI player today!" Apologies!

End of over 49 (8 runs) West Indies 241/6 (RR: 4.91)
DJG Sammy    10* (5b 2x4)      JH Kallis    6-0-38-1
N Deonarine    52* (50b 3x4 1x6)      R McLaren    7-0-46-1

49.1

Langeveldt to Deonarine, 1 leg bye, slower ball, sliding down the leg and Deonarine misses it but gets some pad on it to relinquish strike to Sammy

49.2

Langeveldt to Sammy, SIX, whoa! I have only seen one other man play that shot and they call him MS Dhoni! Full ball outside off, not yorker length, but he stayed back and swivelled the bat in a manic helicopter arc generating enough bat speed to send the ball flying high into the clouds over long on and beyond.

49.3

Langeveldt to Sammy, 2 runs, slower ball, ruins the timing a bit as the pull bobbles away for a couple

49.4

Langeveldt to Sammy, 1 run, again on leg stump, played away into the leg side and he is eager for the second, but Deonarine says no.

49.5

Langeveldt to Deonarine, no run, ah pity, Deonarine was looking skywards as he swung hard at the ball outside off, but alas, he made no contact

49.6

Langeveldt to Deonarine, 1 run, completely decieved by the smart variant again, looks to whip it with the angle to the leg stump, but gets a leading edge into the covers for a single

So then, a nice flourish at the end for WI, who plundered 82 off the last 8 overs. They were in desperate need of the thrust too, with the innings getting stuck in seconde gear until then. But the big question is whether their bowlers can back them up - they have been found wanting mostly in this series. Join us for the chase in half an hour or so.

Jeet: "BTW, that's another player reaching 500 ODI - Sammy. Maybe this is the only occasion when two batsmen in the crease reached their 500 together?" How many milestones to go before I sleep tonight, eh?
