Prasanna powers SL A to four-wicket win

ESPNcricinfo staff

Sri Lanka A 287 for 6 (Karunaratne 89, Dickwella 61, Prasanna 51*) beat West Indies A 282 for 9 (Simmons 106, Deonarine 60, Lakmal 3-45) by four wickets

A century stand from openers Niroshan Dickwella and Dimuth Karunaratne and an aggressive fifty from Seekkuge Prasanna set up Sri Lanka A's four-wicket win over West Indies A in the first unofficial ODI.

Chasing 283, the Sri Lankan openers shared a 138-run stand before Nikita Miller effected the first breakthrough after being brought into the attack. The West Indies bowlers clawed their way back into the game, as Sri Lanka A lost their next five wickets for 85 runs and were struggling at 223 for 6.

Prasanna, however, smashed an unbeaten 17-ball 51 to render the bowling ineffectual. His knock included three fours and five sixes and ensured that Sri Lanka A took a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Earlier, West Indies A had a poor start after they chose to bat, losing opener Nkrumah Bonner for a duck. Their innings, however, was revived by a 117-run, second-wicket stand between Lendl Simmons and captain Kirk Edwards. Edwards fell for 57, off 79 balls, but Simmons carried on, adding another 110-run partnership with Narsingh Deonarine for the third wicket. Simmons' century had seven fours and six sixes.

The West Indies innings, however, seemed to run out of momentum after Simmons fell for 106 with the score at 227 for 3. The middle order failed to capitalise on their strong position and West Indies A were eventually restricted to 282 for 9.

@Prem2248 - Prem is talking about Dilruwan Perera. I have to agree with his comment that Perera should be down the pecking order considering we have much better spinners who are a lot younger (Akhila and Tharindu) and even spinners who are in a similar age bracket to Dilruwan's. His domestic one day statistics are average compared to other spinners in the country and for some reason, he tends to bat up the order when he has a modest batting record.

There are a few guys missing in this A team such as Rajapaska, Roshen Silva, Kaushal Silva just to name a few. Not sure whether these guys are injured or whether the management feels like they wanted to give a few other guys a go.

@Prem2248 this aint 1950's mister. you have a big mentality issue. yes we need to try youngsters but not by dropping all experience lads at once. Y r u concerned about using Prasanna. There are three young bowlers in the team. Chathuranga de Silva as a spinner Lahiru and Ishan as Seamers. they are new comers. we also see Suranga make a comeback. National team has Sachithra and Ajantha. they are grooming Tharindu and Akila. you don't see any of these. IMO biggest problem of selections in the country is not at this level but at U19 level where the selectors go for big schools rather talent which is a shame though it is ok with guys like u who think the game is for Colombo only and Envy all the outside cricketers.

@Prem2248. Who is that 31 year old off spinner you are referring here? I couldnt exactly guess who is that. Dimuth always performs well on A team games. I dont know why he doesnt get into the ODI team.

    @ Prem2248

    What is J&Ps?

  • Nimmie on June 24, 2013, 7:45 GMT

There is no need of trying another aging (31 year old Off)spinner at this level at a time enough quality young spinners in the Country. He cannot be consider as an all rounder either. One can find dozens of better all-rounders in the the Country, at this very moment. The J&Ps have been continuing with their joking acts demoralizing hopes of promising Youngsters . It is very painful see these henchmen in National Teams when other Test Playing countries the best of best players in their countries.( Pls verify stats at good websites like Cricinfo or Cricket Archives)
