Darrel Baldock played two first-class matches for Tasmania as a batsman in the days before the state was part of the Sheffield Shield, and he had the distinction of making a half-century against a touring West Indian side whose attack included Wes Hall and Lance Gibbs. But it was in Australian rules football that Baldock became a champion, and in 1966 he captained St Kilda to their only VFL premiership. Also a successful racehorse trainer, Baldock represented the Labor Party in the Tasmanian Parliament during the 1970s and 80s and served as the state's Minister for Transport. Baldock died in 2011 after a series of strokes.
