Ossie Colhoun was considered by many to be one of Ireland's best wicketkeepers, so much so that it was rumoured that there was interest from one or two English counties. If there was, nothing came of it. One of the reasons might have been his batting, for he was a genuine No. 11, even if he sometimes opened at club level. He made 17 ducks for Ireland and had he be born a generation later with the need for keepers to be able to hold their own as batsmen, he may not have got a look in. But in another way he was ahead of his time, egging on bowlers and fielders and never short of a word or two of advice. He made his first-class debut for Ireland in 1959, and a year later stumped Len Hutton for 89 is his last innings. Colhoun's own farewell came in 1979.
