Crowe: Dhoni's selection, use of bowlers outstanding

You don't often know what to expect in big India-Pakistan matches, but Pakistan are on to a disturbing trend of predictability of late. They work themselves up into a frenzy, try too many things, make too many mistakes, and India coolly stand in a corner doing little things right and stroll their way to a win. In the previous World T20 match between these two sides, Pakistan batted in a similarly nervous manner, got bowled out for 128, and lost despite a valiant attempt with the ball. Here they managed two runs more, succumbing to their own poor running and some clever spin bowling by India - in their 12 overs, the three specialists went for 63 and took three wickets - before putting up a fight with the ball, which was too little and too short.

Even in the lead-up, MS Dhoni spoke about how he was pleased a lot of acrimony had gone out of India-Pakistan matches, Mohammad Hafeez on the other hand sounded combative when asked about the lack of wins against India in World Cups. India were clear in their heads: they played three spinners, and didn't want to take a chance with the dew, so they put Pakistan in. Pakistan were a bundle of nerves.

Ahmed Shehzad ran out Kamran Akmal, who looked in good touch with his two early boundaries, before almost running himself out. With no loose balls on offer, Hafeez and Shehzad got more and more anxious before throwing their wickets away to Ravindra Jadeja and Amit Mishra in the eighth and the ninth overs. It is a minor surprise that Mishra was only in his second Twenty20 international, but he bowled like a grizzled veteran for the most part. The delivery to get Shehzad was a beauty: for the batsman on the edge, he slowed a legbreak down, got some drift and dip, and drew as comprehensive a stumping as any you will see.

From 47 for 3 in the ninth over, Umar Akmal and Shoaib Malik - the latter has feasted on Indian bowling in the past - tried a revival with a 50-run stand in seven overs, but the knowledge that a strong India batting lineup would need a total in excess of 150 to be challenged meant the percentages were always low. India again offered nothing loose, and Malik fell when trying to go inside-out off Mishra's bowling. He was beaten in the flight, the ball turned, and took a thick outside edge for long-off to catch.

What would have please India was that even in the last three overs - with the spinners' quotas exhausted - India conceded just 28 runs. The pitch was not the easiest to bat on, with good bounce and turn on offer, which would have actually left Pakistan a little more annoyed with their effort. About 15 more runs and their bowlers would have put India under serious pressure, especially with Shikhar Dhawan struggling at the top. Somehow, though, Dhawan scored 30 of possibly his most ungainly runs before falling. Rohit Sharma, who looked much better than Dhawan, managed 24 at a marginally better strike rate. Be that as it may, the two had given India a start, and despite a wobble in the middle Virat Kohli - in the company of Suresh Raina - did what he can do even in his sleep.

The only disturbing aspect of India's evening came through in this wobble: Yuvraj Singh had dropped a catch, conceded 13 in one over, and capped it off with a poor shot to be bowled for 1. That left India needing 66 in the remaining 9.5 overs, a situation that needs some panic from batsmen for some interest to be manufactured. No panic was forthcoming from Kohli, and once Shahid Afridi dropped Suresh Raina on 7 it was a cruise for India.

The key aspect of the finish provided by Kohli and Raina was how coolly they played Saeed Ajmal. Ajmal's analysis is worth a look: he was hit for three fours that Dhawan was not in control of, but still went for 18 runs and took one wicket in his four overs. However, the two India batsmen didn't show any desperation against him, and reached home with nine balls to go.

@zain. The main fact is pakistan team is quite weak now. It is nt THE pakistani team which we have seen in the past. Other than umar akmal no player can be trusted.. Akmal atleast is a little more consistent above all.. And lets hope pakistan reaches the final.. And if nt Then better luck next time..

I think the really sad thing was how much the match fizzled out from the very beginning and became one sided (which is the norm when the current Pakistan team beats their Indian counterparts). Clearly we've come a long way from the glory days of Miandad, Kapil, Wasim, Waqar, Tendulkar, Gangul, Dravid, etc when the matches used to live up to the giant expectations associated with two bitter arch-rivals playing each other.

Well, well...indo-pak matches in marquee tournamants has gotten into a trend of sorts...I can envisage a clear pattern here with Pak batting first, putting up a bare minimum target for India to keep their bowlers semblance of a chance, India starting well with maybe a mini wobble in the middle only to finish up in style. Its so in 20 overs as well as ODIs. Interesting to see how they get along in Tests , which at the moment looks a distant dream.

As hafeez said, Pak team is a bundle of nerves, end up trying far too many things for their own good and succumb. Wake up Pak team, you need to do better than this

Hafeez is not at all a captain material..... I would like Shahid Afridi as captain...The guy has got the temperament and attacking nature....t20 is all about attack attack & attack so afridi is the best guy to lead the team in t20s.

Slight amendment to the last paragraph of the article, "... he was hit for three fours that Dhawan was not in control of" - I DISAGREE. Yes, Dhawan struggled in the early part of the innings but decided against being a sitting duck - He decided to attack instead of trying to survive and waste deliveries! And when he attacked Ajmal, he did so with confidence - He picked and executed the 3 sweep shots very well. This is a good lesson of not throwing away your wicket when struggling of form and confidence - Always good to try something different with confidence. Other struggling players may have chosen the wrong option of charging down the wicket! Dhawan is a tremendous player and he will get even better - He is mentally strong.

  • Johnny_129 on March 22, 2014, 15:06 GMT

India needs one of its bowlers to take the lead, take the burden upon himself to take the team to the WC win -much in the same fashion as Yuvi did in the ODI WC. I feel Mishra is the man to take this roleIf one of India's bowlers can take the lead and the other bowlers chip in then India's batting will automatically come good with the slight release of pressure. Kohli, Dhoni, Raina and Yuvi were part of the WC winning team so they know how to win a WC - Yuvi and Raina were strong contributors in the ODI WC while Kholi contributed in bits and Dhoni stole the show in the final. Now the roles will reverse - Kohli and adjoin will carry the bulk of the work while Raina and Yuvi coming good in crunch situations!

I blame hafeez for both this loss and the 2012 wc loss. In 2012 he scored 15 of 28 while if he had scored 40 of that much pakistan would have scored 150 and pakistan would've won. Even in this match he scored 15 of 21 while he could've scored 25 and other batsman wouldn't have been in pressure and Pakistan would've won with the way they were mashallah bowling.

@ Adil Javed on (March 22, 2014, 9:33 GMT): You asked:

"... who is asking India to play Asia cup..."

You may not be aware that India is the original conceptualiser of Asia cup. Along with Pak they convinced SL & BD. This was when they were not part of ICC'sinner circle (a sort of defiance), Also to make more money!

Now you want to disown your parent? Ask him why he is hanging around the house. Reminds me of children evicting their parents from the houses the parents themselves built. It happens quite often in India. Does that happen in Pakistan too?

  • on March 22, 2014, 13:41 GMT

Congrats India, deserved. No doubt that Dhoni is a better captain than Hafeez and doesn't run his mouth off. I said before that Hafeez was stupid with his jaw jaw, some humility and respect for India, they are every bit as good as Pakistan. Discipline in t20 is critical as everything is so compressed. Pakistan showed none and deserved to lose. Still think SL will win this. A Pak fan speaking.

I want to tell you guys a big secret. To keep a permanent place for Malik in this team the team management has selected no other middle order batsmen for this t20 WC. If Shahzad fails Sharjeel can replace him, but if Malik fails there is no one. Can you imagine what kind of approach has Malik got in the selection panel ? Please write about this and expose these selectors.

  • on March 22, 2014, 13:18 GMT

Rahul menon enjoy your win let's see what dhoni yuvraj and raina can do for india in the tournament and next time come up with a good argument as soon Pakistan is going to lift the cup..

  • on March 22, 2014, 12:46 GMT

Why is kamran akmal and Malik back in the team. They played icc ODI and did jack all and were pathetic. After that trophy, without them, Pak have played ODI and t20 without them and won most rather than lost like they did in champions trophy with these two jokers.

Are they back in the team to throw matches for the bookies? KAMMY couldn't catch a cold, but let's have him as a keeper, shall we. After this tournament these two won't be in the team until the next tournament.

No disrespect to ind, but only Pak can make their bowlers look like world class. Absolute disgrace.

  • Johnny_129 on March 22, 2014, 12:00 GMT

This result should serve note to those India and Pakistan fans that abused each other only a few days ago, after the Asia Cup match - This is the nature of sport! India and Pakistan are well matched teams with either one able to win on a given day. In saying that, both teams are mediocre sides compared to great teams of the past - Aus is going through arguably their weakest era in its proud history yet they are still competitive/ better than India or Pak, in most parts of the world.

  • ICCexpert.... on March 22, 2014, 12:00 GMT

Pakistan cant win with players like Shahzad as opener as he blocks too much and Hafeez is not an aggressive captain like Afridi used to be

  • on March 22, 2014, 11:45 GMT

@match-winn Let me tell u 1 thing. Team pakistan itself knows it very well why dey won against india in asia cup. We accept we lost to pakistan but the fact remains watever it is. Entire pakistan team and supporters know dat dhoni is the best captain in the subcontinent. So u yourself accept it.. If dhoni, raina, yuvraj wer der it would have been a complete different story... So please accept it.. Pakistan team is good... But the fact is India can win against pakistan anyday if entire team is present. Let watever the score be.. Learn to accept it.. Pakistan can win against india only in small events. To win big u need to think big.. So think big.. And inshallah pakistan will reach atleast till semis.. As for yuvi, kindly see 2007 wt20, 2011 odi, and many more innings of his.. Dere are ups and downs in all players life. But he will fight back.. And as for dhawan c his series against aust.. U will fome to know his potential. Any1 can bark sitting here. Go play a ball and den talk.

Team Pakistan must have taken Haris sohail and Awais Zia in place of Malik and Talha/Tanvir This would had left us with a lot more choices Bilawal looks dangerous only when he bowls yorker. Junaid bowled well for me and Gul should be rested against Australia Sharjeel is good against pace so he must open tomorrow Sharjeel Shehzad kamran Umar Maqsood Hafeez Afridi Zulfiqar bhatti Ajmal junaid This team can defeat Australia as cab score 150+ which would b enough if batted first

  • coolitbaby on March 22, 2014, 11:14 GMT

I posted a comment at the beginning of this world cup that said that Pakistan is too timid to beat India in big games. After seeing this match, I get the feeling that the Pakistanis were desperately trying to prove me right !! Shehzad, Umar, Kamran, Hafeez etc were playing like they had lost their mind. Trying to hit every ball for six. Shoaib Malik looked like he had a whole goat for breakfast. Very fat and unfit. Very surprising that Pakistan keep selecting him for World Cup matches. Pakistan need to bring in sensible players like Misbah, Yusuf etc and build team in all 3 formats around them.

  • coolitbaby on March 22, 2014, 11:08 GMT

We need to replace Yuvraj with Pujara or Karthik. He is in hopeless form and very low confidence. He was a decent fielder before but is now dropping more catches than he used to. His bowling is pathetic as usual. India can groom Karthik as a hitter. Not a bad idea to try Yusuf Pathan as well. He can't do any worse than Yuvraj.

  • ICCexpert.... on March 22, 2014, 11:04 GMT

Malik is playing for his position not for team. He is playing like a test match.

  • xylofon on March 22, 2014, 11:02 GMT

Congrats to india for the win.

Pakistan lost MAINLY because they never settled when batting BECAUSE the people who bring calmness at the crease are back home. Nasir Jamshed, Haris Sohail.

Shoaib Malik is NOT a T20 player, if Pakistan want go ahead with illogical and unfair selection it actually feels good they loose. Really.

It was 500% embarrising to see the runout problems and Pak continously fail adressing the most basic issues.

Part of Hafeez´s good bowling record is based on tailenders and removing the bowlers who do the real job and take the wickets those bowlers were supposed take. So when he faces pressure situations he is exposed. Raza Hasan couldve been used, India were smarter and played to spin strength like anyone wouldve done.

Sharjeel and Sohaib...100% flops but it will take Pak a year to realise it.

Bilawal is below the level of Pakistans pace resources. It will take Pakistan Wahab Riaz time to realise that.

Kamran spilled his energy for a warmup match. Hothead.

  • piyo_thanda_jiyo_thanda on March 22, 2014, 10:59 GMT

I really don't understand the reasons behind selection of Shikhar Dhawan and Yuvraj. Shikhar has been worked out by all international teams after his first season. He has not played ONE convincing innings in a long time now and looks like he could get out any ball. Yuvraj is a walking wicket. He never had a good technique but with age, his reflexes have slowed considerably. He may play 1-2 good innings here and there but by and large is going to be flop. I can't believe Pujara, Rahane, Dinesh Karthik etc. are being kept out to accommodate these 2 flop shows.

  • Ajay_999 on March 22, 2014, 10:28 GMT

@Albert_cambell : If Indian spinners were so pathetic as u claim them to be, then why don't you go and try touching them with a cricket bat? I'm sure it would be a lot worse than Piers Morgan vs Lee!

Indian fan here. I remember the mental block the Indian team of yesteryears had against their arch rivals. The roles seem to be reversed now. But If Pakistan can introspect they can yet stem the rot. Hafeez as captain can be replaced by Afridi for he present. And drop Shoaib Malik. Fresh legs and young blood who are free of the baggage of the mental block can turn things around.

    @Ahmad Uetian on (March 22, 2014, 5:34 GMT)

I wasn't belittling Ajmal, by comparing his analysis with that of Jadeja.

Ajmal undoubtedly is the best spinner in the world at the moment, followed by Sunil Narain. No doubt about it.

I was trying to draw the attention of many Indian cricket fans who derive a lot of pleasure by poking fun at Jadeja. I tried to do that, by deliberately comparing the much maligned chalk with the much acclaimed cheese. We, Indian fans have to give credit, where it is due. In my judgement (confining to Indian spinners alone, Jadeja is better than Ashwin, who is perceived generally as the best Indian spinner, in recent years.

By the way, you don't have to teach me anything, to be 'learnt'. So, hold on to that particular horse. There is an old English saying: "Don't try to teach your granny, how to suck the thump"...She might have seen at least two generations going through those motions. And, something can be learnt by comparing apples with oranges too.

@oracle_magus. Great sir. I will rate your comments the best and meaningful amongst all rest. Many people always target somebody after each and every match, before Pakistan match so many people were targetting Rohit Sharma only. I just really dont know what is Rohit doing wrong. Before the T20 workd cup he had fantastic run a ball 54 runs against same Pakistan side in Asua Cup. Still he was targetted on basus of two warm up games. Rediculous. And now after Rohit performed relatively well in the match everybody started targetting Yuvraj and comparing Rahane with him. Is it really worth to compare Yuvjaj with Rahane ? Agreed Rahane is class batsman. But in T20 matches Yuvraj is the best. One or two failures cannot be judgement for Yuvraj. He is definately one of match winner India having. Just give him time. WC has just started. I am sure Yuvraj will shine very very soon. All the best Yuvraj & team India.

One Lakh take ki baat- When no one gives a chance to Indian team, then they definitely go all the way..examples like 2007 Wc T20, 2011 Wc Odi..

India played better yesterday, they were a better team yesterday, so they won. Pakistan couldn't handle pressure, and they lost. However some comments, esp @Rajesh.Kumar are pretty interesting; "weak teams like Pakistan", "inconsequential matches like Asia cup matches", "India's understrength team in Asia cup"!, Although Asia Cup is history, but come on Mr Kumar, accept defeat where u lost rather than giving excuses & these cheap smart remarks. As a Pakistani, I really hope that Pakistan wins against Aus, West Indies & BD - & that India looses against all these 3; but if India wins on merit, I will give them credit where they will deserve it, and not mock them for the sake of mocking them. As many know, Pakistan has to win against themselves first and then any other team, and since they couldn't handle the pressure, they were no match to India yesterday, otherwise your team even with Yuvi, Raina & Dhoni won't have mattered much. Enjoy the matches, but don't try to be over smart

This was clinical finish by great Indian batters ... Kohli and Raina definitely live up to high expectations that they have... it was really surprised to see Indian quicks bowling accurate yorkers... apart from the 20th Overs Indian quickies were very good at the job... Indian Spinners were the defining element in India's win... No wonder Pakistan needs to put their heads down and think what they have done and what they are capable of.. Proud of Indian Team... #Bleed Blue

  • on March 22, 2014, 8:15 GMT

Both teams played regulation cricket up to their potential. Pakistan should not expect to win with likes of Shoaib batting ahead of Sohaib (perhaps the Professor got the spellings mixed up), and Kamran opening in place of Sharjeel. Granted that India's bowling is nothing above average, but it's certainly not the worst in the world, and that is exactly what we saw in the game.

  • on March 22, 2014, 8:13 GMT

Dhawan has shown his immaturity by trying to hook a ball which was well over his head and would have been wide if he hadnt swished his bat over his head like trying to ward off a mosquito. This is the first time he has been out in this manner . Is there any rule that one must hit every ball one gets and leave when one is not in control of hisshot?

  • AltafPatel on March 22, 2014, 8:03 GMT

When Pak will understand difference between unnecessary risky single and losing price wicket? They lost once again in name of Akmal. Their batsmen always start to run when ball strikes ball without thinking where ball is going to and is it safe to run for a run. They should learn from young Indian batsmen who show maturity to make sure its safe to run before taking it. Don't know why Fawad Alam who is capable of doing big hits didn't get place for slower Ahmed Shahzad. In-form Muhammad Hafiz was supposed to open the bat who has been quick and consistent batsman now a days. Gul should have bowl good length deliveries rather than continuous flow of fulls which made easier for batsmen to judge and play big shots fearlessly. This Pak team needs Afridi captainship to energize the team, current team seems scared and unmotivated.

India off to a flying start here in the WT20. A win against Pak is always special. This win will definitely instill a lot of confidence whereas Pak will be extremely disappointed. It was a one sided match. Indians batted, bowled well. Fielding needs improvement. This Pak team does not look good i am afraid. Their only hope "Bowling" looks fragile. You cant win an ICC tournament with just 1 strike bowler (Ajmal).Teams will play out his overs scoring 5-6 runs per over and then attack other bowlers. To my surprise Indians bowled really well. Yes, i agree that Pak batting is not the strongest but Indian bowlers did bowl well especially the spinners. If Ind wants 2 reach the final, Yuvi has to fire in some matches. He is a match winner. We need him 2 fire badly. Pak has to perform at their very best on Sunday coz Aus r in top form, and if Pak wants 2 remain in the competition then they need 2 defeat the Aussies. Tough luck Pak. Well played India. We are proud of you. JAI HIND! #Bleed Blue

While this was a great win, India team appears to be top heavy on spinners and part time spinners. Apart from the trio, we have Yuvraj, Raina as well to bowl a few variety of spin bowling. It might be good idea to bring in Binny in place of Yuvraj who seems to be totally out of form

  • BrainsRam on March 22, 2014, 7:43 GMT

With the Indian spinners combining well, it bodes well for India in this dept. However, would like to see Varun Aaron included for the next match in place of Bhuvi. With his express pace, he may go for runs, but against better T20 teams like WI & Australia, on current form, India will need to take wickets and as it is a well documented phrase in the cricket dictionary, "Wickets will slow down scoring in any form of the game". Varun will certainly provide that option as he is not likely to play a containing role.

Shami looked good even though his economy rate will not specify the same.

Dhoni had used Ashwin/Bhuvi/Shami trio in the Powerplay which worked well.He brought Mishra immediately after PP and it worked like a charm.

Rohit played decently to shut his critics (including me) for now - we know he will get another 20 matches based on this innings. But to give credit where it is due, he played.

All in all, a satisfying win and India should not let down their guard.

  • on March 22, 2014, 7:35 GMT

Earlier I predicted groups situation at end as 1) Australia 2) West Indies 3) Inida 4) Pakistan & 5)Bangladesh. But, Amit Mishra is something different. He can be a trump card...

  • on March 22, 2014, 7:24 GMT

Only reason that Pakistan lost was the poor confidence carried by the team. Right from the word go, i could see the tension on the faces and the batting was very sick. India on the other hand was far more confident, not threatened by the defeat, and had bit more better planning. Pakistan need to replace Sharjeel Khan with Ahmad Shahzad, Shoaib Malik with Babad. And they also need to go for runs, they can't win eveb from BD by playing 51 dots. Best of luck Greens for the rest of tournament.

  • realfan on March 22, 2014, 7:16 GMT

cont... sorry but rohit is also equally good player, rohit can play new ball better than jadeja hence jaddu should be facing old ball which is 60-70 overs old ( normally 5-6 positionbatsmen comes at this stages ) just like ganguly.... and this alos helps maintaining left right combo... more over rahane is playing too low down the order, he is natural opener or play at 3, now you cantt replace 3 and 4, rahane fits at 5, and also rohit is natural in playing with ttaileneders... he showed that effectively in his first 2 matches.... and when it comes to jaddu he plays at 4 or 5 posotion in ranaji where he has got 3 tripple ceturies ( come on guys no matter what the track is, scoring 300 needs some batting skill ) he will have more time for himself to settle down and play his natural calm gme... right now he has given role of agtressive batting and he has not succeded in test level... just try this out..jaddu is very good allrounder for india ... he is most underated batsman in entire team

@Albert_cambell: it will be funny to watch your mediocre SA team dancing to the tunes of SL spinners sure SA team as usual will choke as usual...SA team will surely bite the dust in this T20....Even hongkong have a better chance to beat SA with their spinners....this is not a juicy green top for your team to take all the credits...the funny part was SA was so frightened by Aus pace attack and they doctored the green tops in the recently concluded test SA cant play neither in green tops nor spinning wickets...pathetic..

  • Rajesh.Kumar on March 22, 2014, 6:57 GMT

Until now there were two records which stood: Pakistan has never defeated India in an ICC world cup, and Pakistan was never defeated playing on a Friday. So the question was, which record will get broken? And now Pakistan-Friday record stands broken, and India's juggernaut in ICC-WCs goes on. That is the thing about Indian team: they rise to the occasion when it matters most, while other teams are busy winning inconsequential matches in meaningless tourneys like Asia cup!

  • Rajesh.Kumar on March 22, 2014, 6:54 GMT

If India meets Aussies on a track like this, it wlll again be a no contest. Aussies are sitting bunnies on a spinning track like this. Aussies have a chance against India, only if a flat track is prepared for the contest, and a run fest takes place. On a flat track, any team can defeat any team on a given day... As far as India is concerned, only one team is capable of challenging India, and that is West Indies which has a bunch of power hitters who are actually very good players of spin. Re Pakistan: I think Pak should defeat Australia quite easily because, like I said, Australia are clueless against spin.

  • Rajesh.Kumar on March 22, 2014, 6:50 GMT

We should not get carried away by defeating weak teams like Pakistan. The fact that Pakistan won against us in Asia cup was a fluke because we were playing an understrength team, which was experimental in nature. In my opinion, the most dangerous team in this tournament is West Indies, so we should not let our guards down against them. Against Australia also we will win easily if we bowl first, because Aussies are clueless against spin, as we saw during their 4-0 thrashing an year back in India. Bangladesh is to be congratulated for creating pitches which are helping good spin and pace bowling. Now, I notice, that frustrated fans from other nations are out from their woodwork, and calling Indian batsmen flat track bullies. Let me ask this question: if this was a flat track then it was flat track for both the teams, right? Or suddenly did BCCI turn a switch on, and it became a flat track when India came to bat? Too bad that your favorite team could only make 130 runs on a flat track!

  • Pavinasen on March 22, 2014, 6:49 GMT

If it has to be an Asian team that will win this world cup, I will bet my entire pension on Srilanka. They are all round performers. The players are also very humble and modest in their achievements. I am a staunch Indian supporter, but their bowling of late is guaranteed to let you down and also Pakistan's bowling in below par.

I am Indian and want to ask a q to Pak coach...Where the hell is ASAD SAFIQ Sharjeel...Throws his bat to every ball, not at all technically sound and a bad fielder. Fawad...No stamina and technically poor batsman and bellow avg fielder Maqsood.. Not proper batsman but better than Sharjeel and Fawad and avg fielder. Pak ppl who are saying the team selection was not gud, I think it was ok but they must have playes 1 more batsman as the whole world know Ajaml, Afridi & Hafiz gonna bowl their quota of 4 overs each...including 3 seamers for 8 overs was not a wise decision. For babar, Indian players are best to play spin in the world so that was the reason for not picking him up... Akmal was gud untill Sahzad did mistake and run him out..Malik was there for stability which he did but cud not make a big score...but why the hell Afridi and Umar sloged in last five overs...It does not make any sense to me at all!

  • siddhartha87 on March 22, 2014, 6:36 GMT

could not understand why Shoaib Malik played yesterday. Umar Akmal and Afridi are the reasons for the Pakitan loss though. Not sure what they were doing in the slog overs.

  • NP_NY on March 22, 2014, 6:29 GMT

The difference in the team psyche, confidence and performance when Dhoni plays, is there for everyone to see. India really missed Raina and Dhoni and didn't play Amit Mishra enough in the Asia cup. On sub-continent pitches Raina and Mishra are a must-play in limited overs formats.

  • Gopakumarktda on March 22, 2014, 6:28 GMT

I can't understand as to why Pak T20 team still persists with Shoib Malik despite his continuous failures. He was a test cricket player and not suited for hard hitting T20 format. I don't remember any worth T20 inning from him so far. Still he is in T 20 team. I am sure there is lot of talents in Pak but yet persisting with this veterans is a waste for Pak Team and also denying Pak talented batsman in waiting. Wake up Pak Selectors and management! As an Indian I still want to see a fighting and competitive Pak Team to watch a India-Pak final.

good to see Dhoni back to his captaincy self... he was not compromised with anything... he was all glaring at players angrily whenever a catch is dropped or miss fields as if " you wont be there for next match "... always good to see this type of calm agression from dhoni.... and he said " mishra performed 70-75% of what he catually can " this is always a boost for the bowler, especially when a bowler was beched for long, and making a comeback and captain praising like this is always a boost.... good going... hope this performcance continues and dont let their gaurd down , like i said Group B is most challenging and even 1 match can be crucial...

  • nilb on March 22, 2014, 6:27 GMT

Though I have no doubts about Yuvi's class, my only concern is his listless appearances on the ground. If he is unable to focus, I can see 2 options for MSD -

    1. Replace Yuvi with Stuart Binny, get a focussed fielder, a reasonable alternate seamer (useful if conditions favor seamers) & someone who has a fair chance at slamming 3 / 4 boundaries in a short 2 / 3 over stint with the bat.

    2. Replace Yuvi with Rahane who can open the bowling & allow Rohit to drop back to # 4 / 5, giving Rohit the finisher's role that he is more comfortable with.

  • Gopakumarktda on March 22, 2014, 5:27 GMT

I agree with the comments of many that Yuvaraj is not deserved to in the team and body language on field in the match says so. Dhoni needs to be bold enough to include Rahane in his place. Rahane must be sloted for opening with Dhawan as he is a class player in the top order in this short format and is not good enough for slogging in the end overs. Rohit Sharma is more suitable for middle as he has the class and power for the slogging. He also has to take responsibility of a finisher as he does for MI in IPL. It is time to find a pacer to bowl in death in place of Kumar otherwise India will find it difficult in crucial matches.

  • Siva_Bala75 on March 22, 2014, 5:27 GMT

India's fielding (Yuvi, Bhuvi, Shami, Mishra) was much below par. Ashwin was OK because he was better than his 'usual' standards. Dhoni has great skills to hide two or may be even three but not five! One more reason India needs Rahane.

India beat Pakistan FAIR and SQUARE ! A workman-like performance. Being a Pakistan & Cricket fan, I am gutted by the overall attitude of players and especially the think-tanks. What was the rationale behind selection of Afridi, Umar Gul, Junaid, Shoaib Malik ? Afridi & Umar Gul are NOT MATCH FIT AND DO NOT DESERVE TO BE IN SQUAD ! Both Junaid and Malik performed below par recently while Kamran Akmal has NOT set the world alight either. All of Mohd. Talha, Z. Babar and Sharjeel Khan should ve played the game. The think tanks were/are all at sea trying different (Batting) combinations during warm-up matches. Pakistan fans appreciate the fact the winning/losing is part of the game, but going down without a fight ( cardinal sin ) is devastating/hurts. Better was/is expected . It appears all is NOT well within the team. Onward, Hafeez need to take bold decisions. Australia, W.Indies are full of impact players/power hitters while rejuvenated B'desh will be a tough nut to crack.

It is very unfortunate to read some comments against Yuvi. Regular comments on Rohit is now became a habit for most of the people. But why to comment immediately on Yuvi ? Why everybody is forgetting so fast about Yuvis ability ? Though Rahane is excellent tallent, there cant be any comparison between Rahane & Yuvraj. Especially in T20 matches how can Rahane match to Yuvraj ? Very silly comparison. I think it is dangerous for Rahane too. Many people just trying to target any flop batsman in a pertucular match except Kohli, and starts comparing Rahane with the batsman. Till Pakistan match Rohit was in radar. But Rohit batted reasonably well. So obvious target they got Yuvraj Singh. If Afridi had not missed Rainas catch, then Raina might would have been on target. This is not good for India atall. Agreed, we have lost so many matches in 2014. But it was not due to failure in batting atall. Poor fielding & inexperienced bowling costs us the results. Please buck up our team. ATB Team India

I am big fan of Yuvi and would want Yuvi to get his form back. BUT yesterday Yuvi's body language was completely disappointing. He was looking very lazy. I was saying from the beginning that Rohit is suitable in the middle not as an opener. Put Jadeja to open and push rohit in middle order or bring Rahane to facilitate Rohit in middle. Now Yuvi is out of form we can easily place Rohit in middle as Rahane to open. but the big thing is Mr.DHONI WOULD NOT WANT TO CHANGE THE WINNING COMBINATION. WHO WOULD GO AND TELL MR. Fans on both sides, please take your suggestions beyond mere selection woes! Whoever is selected has to deliver and there is no God given guarantee that somebody will deliver on a given day. It's just the way it goes.

Somehow, Raina bashers seem to have suddenly vanished! He is no longer the "useless" load the team is carrying! My, my, such short memories! Come on, people! Those catches were candy for any fielder, but what I admire about Raina is that he hasn't gone into a shell of insecurity. He is playing his normal game, which can be dangerous, because he will always take his chances. If they connect, you are in for a good score from him, in no time at all.

Good to see him in concert with Kohli, and they seem to have sorted out their roles. Kohli anchoring while Raina hits out.

Good job by the scorers, stealing three runs from Raina.

Nothing like an Indo-Pak finals; though chances of that happening look dim for both. Of course, anything can happen in T-20!

What is that, with some Sri Lankan fans like you, bladerunners et al, for this constant India baiting? Difficult to fathom! Are you finding it difficult to digest the fact that BCCI bailed out Sri Lankan Board so many times in the past; by agreeing to and arranging for so many bilateral series, many of which wee meaningless, except that they helped you tide over the financial lock-jam?

  • buzzcric on March 22, 2014, 4:37 GMT

Indian guys keep patience with Yuvraj as we all know he picks himself up in mid stage of matches in every WC that India has won. He provides India with the much needed fire power of clearing boundary with ease in 13-18 over when we have 5 fielders guarding boundary.

For Pakistan it is better their players talk less and show more on field. Hafeez is a mug and instead a captain like Misbah would have made a lot of difference to their side.

Very ordinary performance from a bunch of players.Selection committee should be held responsible for this. Why shoaib and kamran have come and played in the team ahead of younger players is beyond comprehension. I saw the first over of the match and it described the story of whole of the match so I didn follow it later. Bring in tanveer in next game and it will be the worst team for pakistan in these days.

  • MiddleStump on March 22, 2014, 3:22 GMT

Barely average cricket played by both teams, India being relatively better. In spite of dropped catches and about 10 gifted runs in the field, Pakistan could only muster 130 runs. Against a good fielding side they would have struggled to get 110. Dhawan was all hit or miss, Yuvraj was all miss. Raina and Kohli saved the day. Let alone Yuvraj and Dhawan, even the 'young' Indian players like B.Kumar, Mishra, and Varun Aaron don't have half the agility or dedication to their fielding when compared to a 40 year old Mike Hussey. In spite of the win, it is hard to imagine India in the final based on this match.

First of all congrats to india for continuing their winning streak. However I must say here that it was the most boring Pakistan vs india match because there was no pressure on the teams. All the matches that were played before both Pakistan and india had to win for some reason but this time it was the start of the tournament. Having said that I believe Pakistan has very little chance of making it to semi-finals because their bowling is very weak. Yes you heard me correctly. All big names like Gul, Junaid and M Hafeez are struggling. One strike bowler cant win games for your alone. I hate to be right but I do not see Pakistan winning against Australia and West Indies. Against, BD they may have a chance. Its time that we Pakistanis must think rationally and say good bye to old folks like Malik, Tanvir and Afridi. Like other teams we should use this format to infuse new blood into the team.

pakistan need misbah in their batting order

  • mensan on March 22, 2014, 3:07 GMT

Pakistan's batting is pathetic. They have no power hitters except unpredictable Afridi and Umar Akmal. T20 needs batting lines like AUS and IND, batsmen who can start hitting from ball 1. Slog sweep against the spinners is a must against spinners which is hardly ever played by Pakistani batsmen. Each over must contain at least 1 boundary. Only then you can hope to have a fighting score. Shoaib Malik is totally useless in T20. I don't know how he comes into team again and again.

  • on March 22, 2014, 3:06 GMT

Good game. I'm an Indian but classy display by the Pak side - players coming up to congratulate the Indians after the win... very classy. Once the game is over, the rivalry should be set aside. I'm tired of the acrimony on the field and on this forum... nice gesture, Pakistan.

  • on March 22, 2014, 2:51 GMT

Pakistan should have been competing with the rest of associate teams to qualify for the super 10.Judging from their performance I doubt they would have qualified.

  • on March 22, 2014, 2:46 GMT

Poor show from the two ex-dashers (Afridi & Yuvi) cancelled each other. Both teams should think of new, young, talented players in their place.

The replacements should deliver more than good batting though. Otherwise, the balance will be adversely affected. The additional string to the bow need not be in bowling. Since, India has no backup for wicket-keeping in the middle of a match, it could be a wicket-keeper-batsman like, Karthik, Rayudu, Parthiv, Saha... who ever is and will be available in good form. At least till ODI World cup next year.

  • mshyder on March 22, 2014, 2:39 GMT

That is exactly what was expected of Pakistan. We always blame our batting for such losses but our over hyped bowling is equally responsible. If Indian bowling chocked our batsmen why couldn't our bowlers do the same. Be realistic, with players like Kamran Akmal who like previous T20 WC performed in warm up match only to fail in the real test, Malik who was selected despite a terrible form in BBL and no recent performance to justify selection, Junaid whose T20 economy rate is almost 9, Bilawal whose T20 economy rate is almost 8.5, Umar Gul who for the last 3 years has always been very expensive in big games, what can one expect. It is primarily a selection debacle. It would need a miracle for Pakistan qualify to the next round with this team.

It looks like Pakistan lost even before match began. There was no intent from Pakistan batsmen from the start. They never tried to unsettle the bowlers,no quick singles, no use of powerplay etc. Main difference which i saw between batsmen from both sides was Indian batsmen took singles. It is a thing which is learned through coaching. It makes clear that Pakistani young players lack coaching. IF it is the case then Pakistan cricket will be extinct in next few years which will be great loss for whole cricket world. BCCI should allow Pakistani to play in IPL which will help them to get some coaching and learn some tricks otherwise greatest sporting rivarly in the world will lose it shine. There is nothing to be happy about that. RIP Pakistan cricket

  • on March 22, 2014, 1:42 GMT

There is one thing to notice in dhonis captaincy is the captain we need. This was not the same captain in nz tests. Dhoni was back, glaring at fielders when the throw is not right. Our when they slow down allowing the batsmen to take 2. walking up to the bowler to have a chat. an arm on their shoulders if they are getting hit. This is the Dhoni that can win you world tournaments. Its a good sign. But have to wonder where this Dhoni vanishes in some tests though. And off that. Someone had commented in the preview that junaid khan eats virat kohli. mate virat at the moment is eating bowlers across the world for breakfast lunch and dinner. Maybe even for an evening snack too.

As the saying goes" you make the same mistakes, you get the same results". Pakistani selectors have been making the same mistake of selecting players like Shoaib Malik who have failed repeatedly in the past but they never learn. The way Shoaib Malik played the first few deliveries summed up the Pakistan approach to the game." Protect your wicket, make sure you don't get out for a duck, score a few runs, doesn't matter whether the score is competitive or not".

  • India_Rules_Everybody on March 22, 2014, 1:18 GMT

  • Johnny_129 on March 22, 2014, 1:18 GMT

This is extremely strange - What actually happens to Pakistan when playing India in WC matches? How many straight losses is that, now?? I don't know but I think Indian team is under more pressure (although Pak faces pressure too) in the 'average match' BUT when it comes to WC matches both teams find themselves under equal pressure - In this situation Pakistan succumbs even from winning positions??? Just a theory.

  • ShanNachimuthu on March 22, 2014, 1:08 GMT

The inclusion of Amit Mishra bolstered the Indian spin department. His bowling adds variety in spin bowling which was missing for long time in all format. This is even helping Ashwin and Jadeja to perform better. It really good to see Raina back to form while Yuvi still a concern. Yuvi needs to play straight few more deliveries before going across. He looks over confident to play that shot. The opening pair also looks not that confident. Rohit's lazy elegance always gives a chance to opposition. He should avoid trying to be looking too smart and elegant at the beginning of an innings. The elegance should come by itself not by force. Jadeja can be tired as a opener in T20s and ODIs. If this succeeds it will provide an opportunity to include Binny into the side. Even Binny can be tried as opener. This combination will workout for any bowling conditions. Rohit should be replaced by Binny and asked to open.

  • on March 22, 2014, 1:01 GMT

Mishra: We should persist with Mishra for some more matches; perhaps he may turn out to be a trump card in OZ and NZ in the next ODI World cup.

  • on March 22, 2014, 0:35 GMT

I really dont see what was the point in playing bilawal bhati in place of sharjeel khan.India has 2 left arm bowlers and one leg spinner, left handed batsman in the middle order would have helped pakistan a lot. Hafeez is an average batsman who can only score heavily against weaker oppositions.Number 3 position in batting order all around the world is occupied by the best batsman in team eg virat kohli for india.M hafeez should have sent either umar akmal or sohaib maqsood at 3. pakistan lost this match due to poor team selection and poor captaincy. In next matches pakistan should make some changes in the playing eleven. My playing eleven would be kamran, ahmed, umar, sohaib maqsood, malik, sharjeel khan,m hafeez, shahid afridi, sohail, saeed,m talha/zulfiqar If shoiib malik is to be played in next matches he should be used as the sixth bowler. He is a far better bowler than bhatti and he bowls his full qouta in domestic cricket and he also bowls for the county matches. So y not utilize him.

  • on March 22, 2014, 0:27 GMT

As a pakistani, I am happy that we won't have to meet India again in the tournament because of the being in the same group, we can't meet in semi final and the only way we play india again is if we reach final, and India also reaches the final.

  • on March 22, 2014, 0:21 GMT

Misbah Ul Haq should play in place of Shoaib Malik. Bring in another all rounder in place of bhatti. But Pakistan should keep in mind that now Aussies have some very good players of spin as displayed in their last india tour. Bailey, Maxwel & Hodge all are very quick between wickets and hit it long and hard. India should be cautious too!!

Well played Indians and hope to see more consistent performances like this in the next couple of games.

  • Coolcapricorn on March 21, 2014, 23:42 GMT

Was surprised but glad Mishra got an opportunity at long last & showed what he could do. Staggering when you consider how totally ineffective our spinners were on the tours to SA & NZ but when they are back in subcontinental conditions with the wickets suiting them, they now look so classy & dangerous! MSD too looks a totally different & effective captain as he seems to be in his element in the shorter formats of the game when compared to Test cricket. We saw him today being decisive, positive & constantly communicating with his bowlers + fielders - which is a total paradox to his poor captaincy in Test cricket. Bhuvneshwar just like Aaron, needs to improve his fielding - for a young man, he was quite poor today as was Aaron the other day!

  • chirag_mav on March 21, 2014, 23:30 GMT

@VKohlitheGreat -- Exactly what I was thinking. Raina and Virat didn't even complete the run, so it was definitely not a single. It was definitely a boundary, and India's score should have been 134. By a quick calculation, India's NRR would have been 0.743 instead of 0.581. That is a huge difference. I hope someone takes it up with ICC.

  • yuvi_gladiator on March 21, 2014, 23:21 GMT

india have the right balance now i think, if the ball turns. it helps that india does not have any ball wasters in the side. the good thing about raina and yuvi is if they fire we win, if they get out they won't have had wasted many balls before getting out so the next batsmen will still have a chance. unlike rahane, rayudu, karthik who let us down by wasting too many balls in middle overs and then getting out in asia cup, new zealand and SA. i wish we had included samson who could take yuvi's spot in future. as long as they don't play rahane we will have a good chance to make semis

India has won a crucial match against Arch rivals Pakistan. This match is more important to win because this is perhaps the most difficult & Tuff group involving the holders WI& The Mighty Australia.Pakistan was yet another prospectful Team.Beating Pakistan with a reasonably good Run rate could help India in daysvahead.

The retirement announced by Misbah-Ul-Haq has seriously affected the performance of Pakistan.the inconsistent performance from Sahid Afridi the overnight hero of Asia cup also affected the performance of Pakistan. The hue& cry of retired Sr players of Pakistan Against Misbah proved wrong.

The oldest guy in Pakistan Syed Ajmal does not look as good as he was until recent time. It appears that Syed Ajmal is gradually showing a trend of Deterioration in his bowling. He alone bowled 4 full overs in this match although he could get just one wicket which was a piece of beautiful Bowling.Next India takes on The holders WI,a match more hard to win.If India gets through good.

  • jb633 on March 21, 2014, 22:32 GMT

Well played to India they won this at a canter. I think these night games take away the effect of the pitch somewhat as the spinners ares struggling to grip the ball properly. I think people are writing off the southern hemisphere teams slightly too early. I must confess the bowling of India was really good and far better than expected. If they continue to bowl like this they have a great shout.

whenever India lose any match, some people start crying India don't have fast bowler, take him, drop him. but the fact is India never have good pace attack. still India always remain a very strong team in subcontinent based on their strong batting lineup and good spinner. whenever playing in subcontinent, forget about fast bowler, but definitely 3 spinner should be taken. today they did, and it worked and will work in future also. It is more important to use the strength than thinking about weakness

    Professional performance from Team India,

@UK_CHAP -> "When it comes to proper series Pakistan generally tend to fare better. Indian fans needs to ask themselves why don`t India play Pakistan in any kind of series in a neutral venue, history of the teams will tell you why they don`t."

Just stop there Pakistan came on top for the better part of 80s and 90s. But throughout the 2000s India have done very well. (Defeating pakistan in pakistan twice in both of the bilateral ODIs where one was complete domination), Out of the four bilateral ODI series in India, team india won two and lost two series (which was again a commanding performance from Pakistan).

Here is what I think, BCCI just does not want to organize a series with Pakistan because they are somewhat unsure of the results and do not want to lose any revenues. But it is unfair to say in such series Pakistan are default favourites. We know from the recent statistics that is not exactly true.

With all due respect to Yuvraj - really hope MSD will let go of his stubbornness and drop Yuvi in favor of Rahane. Shuffle the order, get Rahane to partner with Dhawan up top, drop Rohit down to number 4 where he can be excellent, and play the same rest of the team as today (three spinners and two seamers). In addition, Rahane is a superb fielder, much better than the Yuvraj of today is. Then and only then, India is likely to at least go through to the semis.

  • NP_NY on March 21, 2014, 21:03 GMT

India's winning trend against Pak in world cups continues. On the other hand, every time India has beaten Pak in a world cup game, Pak has gone on to at least the semi-finals. 1stly congrats to India for planning and achievig their goal. It's quite apparent that India have looked at the strengths/weaknesses of the Pakistan Batsmen and bowled appropriately. Pakistan need to learn from the top that a positive approach whilst batting will benefit everybody. I'm sorry but at times I thought I was watching a test match. Those in charge need to be tougher on Players who aren't performing and bring in new younger players advising them how they need to approach games. There are 2-3 people playing for themselves in this squad and there was certainly friction amongst the Pakistan players in both warm up games. Pakistan needs to invest heavily in batting academies backed by talented coaches. The leagues need to be a lot tougher so players become mentally used to these sort of games. Finally replace the bowlig coach with somebody intelligent. Last comment a FOREIGN fielding coach is the only way forward. We are in the 21st Century and should plan our aproach similarly

  • on March 21, 2014, 20:42 GMT

If Pakistan continues to play Malik, Kamran Akmal and Junaid they will not win a single match. If Sri Lanka plays Chandimal and Mahela they too would surely lose. India has a balanced side with a great skipper. Australia are no doubt the favourites in my opinion. However, best of luck Sri Lanka.

As some ppl are discussing here, raina scored a boundary of the last ball and score should have been 135 in 18.3 overs....I am surprised the scorers didn't catch it.

ha ha ha and they said afridi's form is the key....

  • Harmony111 on March 21, 2014, 20:23 GMT

You are right. Raina didn't even take the run. He stood there and waited for Kohli to come to him after which they went home. I had noticed this right then. I don't know why the score was set to 131 and not 134. I hope these missing 3 runs do not come back to haunt India later on cos India's group is the group of death. In T20s, the margin of error is quite low and anyone can beat anyone. We suffered last time too due to low NRR and this time too we could have won in 16-17 overs but we took a few extra balls.

  • mzm149 on March 21, 2014, 20:06 GMT

Pakistan's team against Australia should be:

    1. Kamran Akmal 2. Ahmed Shehzad 3. Mohammad Hafeez 4. Umar Akmal 5. Shoaib Malik 6. Sohaib Maqsood 7. Bilawal Bhatti 8. Zulfiqar Babar 9. Sohail Tanvir 10.Junaid Khan 11. Saeed Ajmal

  • Deshi_Boy on March 21, 2014, 20:04 GMT

ICC should seriously reconsider the Test status of Pakistan. Few months back they lost test against Zimbabwe. Afghanistan is better team than Pakistan.

  • on March 21, 2014, 20:02 GMT

The better team won today No matter whether u r playing test odis or T20, performance of the Top 3 batsmen decides the fate normally and that happens today Our top 3 wasted a good chunk of balls for merely nothing! Even after that, Pak was well on track for 155,160 but over number 17 and 18 added only 4 Runs. Overall Pak played 51 dot balls..From the tournament point of view, this was the toughest game for Pak as the opponents were the best negotiators of our strength (spin) Against Australia, drop Malik for Sharjeel as sharjeel plays pace well and can put up 20,22 quick runs at start. Play hafeez at 4 with shehzad one down Pak can still win all other group games and qualify along side India

  • mzm149 on March 21, 2014, 20:01 GMT

Ahmed Shehzad has some serious issues. He is always involved in run outs of other batsmen. Nasir Jamshed, Umar Akmal, Hafeez and now Kamran Akmal are in the list. He needs to sort out his insecurities.

  • AlbertPintoGussaHua on March 21, 2014, 20:00 GMT

Replace B. Kumar with Mohit Sharma and Yuvi with Rahane. Then ask Jadeja and Ashwin to open and just murder the bowling without worrying about getting out. If Jadeja gets out first then Dhawan comes in. If Ashwin gets out then Kohli comes in. Continue with this strategy so that one right hander and one left hander is always at the crease. The opposition bowlers will be clueless what hit them and 200 will be par for the course. Time to think outside the box, which Fletcher/Dhoni ought to be doing.

  • mzm149 on March 21, 2014, 19:59 GMT

Afridi fans and our media should have been back to earth now. Slow batting at crucial time, a dropped catch of Raina at crucial time and pathetic bowling on a spin friendly pitch. This is Afridi for you. If he was not fully fit why was he put into the team. First he contributed in a Asia Cup final loss and now in today's game due to his fitness. Please bring in Zulfiqar Babar in next game instead of him. He should have guts to sit out if he feels he is not well. He can't play Australia's pacers anyway.

  • on March 21, 2014, 19:58 GMT

I request to take off the Test Status of Pakistan and give chance to Netherlands. I am sure Netherlands, Ireland will beat Pak with ease.

  • SharathMansanpally on March 21, 2014, 19:57 GMT

@VKohlitheGreat, if the batsmen complete a run before the ball reaches boundary, the match ends there, boundary does not count anymore.

  • Nutcutlet on March 21, 2014, 19:56 GMT

Ah, so not every subcontinental team plays spin... Pakistan's ineptness reminded me of England occasionally, but I think England's running between the wickets is marginally better... On this showing, Pakistan has some work to do, but who's to say things can't be turned around. As a match, I give this 5/10 - tops.

  • Hira1 on March 21, 2014, 19:54 GMT

Looking at Pak team performance today its highly unlikely they can reach semi final from here until and unless Aus and WI play real bad against us............the way Pak batsman started the batting it seems they have already lost the match. Pak is playing a major tournament but till yet they are not sure of the opening batting combination ...........only God may help Pak

  • on March 21, 2014, 19:51 GMT

Ladies & Gentleman have the same set of Pakistani fans set foot in here who slammed India left right n center during the Asia Cup? I said it then, reiterate it now, when it comes to the matches that matter, your team crumbles. The scoreline reads 9-0. And to those who apparently thought we dont win beyond our home turf.... Keep tuning in... Till the finals.... And see the Men in Blue romp home with the title.

  • ToTellUTheTruth on March 21, 2014, 19:51 GMT thoughs exactly. Their mannerisms are also similar except for the talent.

Mr. Boom Boom - you are the reason why Pak lost today

    Yuvi - Come on ma!!!

    Mishra - proud of you

Umar Gul - All your "bad days" are against India in ICC world cups. Ever thought of why that is so, when you normally destroy them in non-world cup events?

  • SandipManjrekar on March 21, 2014, 19:41 GMT

MSD really surprised everybody tonight including Pakistan. I hope he didn't forget missing the S/F flight in the last T20 held in SL because of 1 bad match against Oz. Ind did beat Pak convincingly in that world cup but faltered against Watto's all round show. Next outing against WI would tell us where S/F route goes.

As far as Pak is concerned, they have got many alarms but no one bothered to take care of those. Every one was focusing on verbal confrontation even though they were poor in many areas in Asia Cup. Victory over arch rival put them into complacency & bad selections made a mess of it. Very difficult road map ahead for them as they are facing blazing Oz.

Wicket at Mirpur is tricky one which suits more WI attack probably. MSD should include Rahane for next outing considering the pitch here with dropping one of the seam bowler. It was off day for Yuvi & being senior he would know areas where he needs few changes. But 7 batsmen is must option here in Bangladesh.

M.S. Dhoni simply outfoxed M. Hafeez knowing Pak team has no clue of setting targets when batting first and him seeing first hand how Pak gets under pressure playing India in ICC events. Masterful tactician The Indian Captain. It looked as if India were playing with school boys. Mohammed Hafeez may say whatever is his post match comments but during the game his facial expression had pressure written all over it. It pains to not know why and that in a Twenty20 game? Well played India from Pak Cric Fan.

It was a boring match .Pitch was tough to bat on. India bowling was outstanding !!Kudos !Whenever we bowl well we win !3 spinners is the way to go .Two seamers are also set. Taking 3rd seamer in subcontinent is suicide for India. Imagine how many runs would Aaron/Mohit/Ishant /Vinay concede instead of Mishra .I think India have started well they have a chance now. No changes with batting or bowling order are needed .Yuvi will strike form as shown in warm ups I think .Rohit Dhawan gave us a good start and were playing positively given that it was a low score. Sadly for Pakistan Afridi has played his 2 matches per year quota with the bat. Now with superior bowling than others they will have to bowl much better than they did today. Ajmal showed why he is a champ but others did not support him. Maqsood should come before Afridi .Srsly this match was not as entertaining as Ire vs Ned even though I realize every match cannot be a last ball thriller or six a thon .May the best team win

  • on March 21, 2014, 19:23 GMT

Pakistan was made to loose it intentionally, for friendship sake, Najam Sehti wanted to make India happy for his own gains. That is why there was no punch in their game. In batting batsman were just throwing the ball in air & during bowling in every over they bowled good 1st three balls & then gave opportunity to score in next three. This was the script. India will betray as ever. I don't know when they will learn.

Yuvraj Singh is a great player. He will be back. Infact he had good warmup matches. Today was not such a classy day for him. Best of luck for the rest of the games.

Well done India for keeping the unbeaten record. now 9-0.

As far as Pak is concerned, they have some really good players like Umar Akmal, Hafiz and Ajmal. Don't understand why so hype for Afridi, who cause more damage than good to the team. Also felt that just winning narrowly against second teams from India, BD and against Afg where they were in backfoot for 40% of the match and beaten twice by SL does not make them a champion team. Pak fans with due respect for them for having passionately backing up their mercurial and inconsistent team and for their media, got overexcited and have overestimated themselves. It was never a world class team and a mere shadow of legends like Akram, Waqar, Inzy, Anwar.

  • on March 21, 2014, 19:13 GMT

it was good to win this 1st match against Pakistan, so that they can have best momentum for the next matches. but the Indian batting line is also seems to be flexible, so they have to give more important to openers and also middle order batsmen, then only India have chance of winning the next matches. I think if Pakistan could have scored at least 150 above ,Indian batsmen could be more pressure to win this game . Therefore Rohit and Dhawan has to stay at least more than 8 overs ,then only they can at least build up some platforms to score more runs in the game....otherwise team India could face problems in other matches...

T20 is not new to Amit Mishra even though this is his 2nd T20I. He is the only player to take 3 hat tricks in IPL. His weakness - his batting and fielding, makes him a unanimous choice to drop, whenever he fails in his main department - bowling.

  • ramz30380 on March 21, 2014, 19:05 GMT

@Dhanno - Mishra did bowl well - he deserves the accolades but tht doesnt mean that u have to demean another team-mate of his! First - Mishra can never be used in the powerplay - Ashwin is used - only the top thinking bowlers can be used in the powerplay - I am not contending that Ashwin is the best - I am saying that he offers a lot more flexibilty to the Indian attack - both with the ball & bat!

As a leg spinner it is easy to get hit - a leggie will go for more runs than an offie usually - with already the pacers leaking runs Indian bowling cannot afford it if Mishi gets hit...Thats why I rate Anil Kumble to be one of the best spinners India has ever produced!

On a captain's perspective - he has to offer a combination of attack + defensive field when he has a leggie bowling that will not be the case with Ashwin / SRJ - the reasons I cite are wht makes Ashwin a better choice than Mishra. Talent wise there is no mistaking Mishra's abilities - no-one has ever said he is bad!

Well played India. Very disappointed in Pakistani Bowling. I have been following Junaid for a while and I must say that he is all bravado with little substance. Yes he seems to be a hard working bowler, but nothing spectacular-just about average bowler. Gul is not the same for last two yrs or so. Tanvir should replace Junaid

  • Anubhav-the-Experience on March 21, 2014, 18:52 GMT

20 runs does not look much and pak could have easily gotten them, they were relying too much on afridi I guess. I thought they played much below their capacity and they tried to do much different....I was hoping like an asia cup game, lost some calories without moving from bed that day. Top 4 Indians including Kohli and Yuvraj looks like easy wickets...A good bowling line-up will remove top 3 within 20 runs, causing all the pressure on raina and kohli who always fail in t20 in these scenarios...Someone suggested rahane for dhawan but I guess this is no experiment we are stuck unless of course we lose very badly, one of our league matches.

It was definitely a boundary, and India's score should have been 134. By a quick calculation, India's NRR would have been 0.743 instead of 0.581. That is a huge difference. I hope someone takes it up with ICC.

  • on March 21, 2014, 18:33 GMT

Pak does not have any mental block. India and srilanka have become since the late nineties more professional. India does not cry if it loses to Pak any more. Also these days the cricket ball is monitored by the umpire. So the great boomerang reverse swing is gone. No more Pak bowlers using that to get 6 for 22 and get sides to collapse from 174 for 3 to 196 all out. Fielding and a professional approach is key. Also India does not care about religious instigations. Today was Friday but India won. So on neutral venues after a few losses, India will totally dominate. My all time favorite is akram not Sachin but the truth is ind and SL are no more afraid of Pak. See the records before 2001 and after. India has moved on since the late 90s. And they are not vehement or fanatical. Indian culture too has seen a big change. Pak unfortunately has been going the opp way and is still rooted to the mindset of the 80s.

  • Engr_cricket on March 21, 2014, 18:33 GMT

Well played India..Got to appreciate Their spinners. Pakistan was not attacking after Kamran Akmal run out perhaps poor planning and execution.Their is no attack is this world who can defend 130 against India's dominant betting.Gul needs to be rested, pathetic bowling once again.150 could have been challenging but still India would have won it at the end. All over India was more professional and deserved the honors. and I dont understand why Dhoni dont play Mishra in his eleven all the time.

  • Zahidsaltin on March 21, 2014, 18:30 GMT

Pakistan rely on afridi flukes in every match but it doesn't happen more ofently then expected. Their batting, bowling and fielding all were pathetic today. Hafeez needs to score at a better strike rate as he slows things down as soon as a wicket falls and that puts a lot of pressure on batsmen low the order.Even Misbah has a better SR than Hafeez in ODIs and T20s. Malik is a curse of God in our team. Somehow he find a way to be selected. GUL is more of a burden and Junaid was never a T20 bowler. So in my opinion, pakistan will lose all their matches in this group

  • icemankimi on March 21, 2014, 18:30 GMT

@UK_Chap...Its better if you just comment on the game mate not the history of these 2 teams.... India clearly played well and its not any magic or luck that played its part. Pakistan is a very good bowling unit and batting is good on paper. However they lack coordination and temperment to excel at big tournaments. We dont need to ask ourselves that why we dont play Pakistan at other venues. How many teams are regularly playing pakistan... ???

  • on March 21, 2014, 18:29 GMT

  • getsetgopk on March 21, 2014, 18:27 GMT

For close to six decades, the Pak bowlers have shouldered the burden of our batsmen and have provided better results and have ruled cricket in Asia and were very good competitors outside. Time has come the batsmen carry their own weight. Even to this day, the world's best spin bowler comes from Pakistan in Saeed Ajmal, but he's a spinner, not like a wasim or waqar or Imran to rip through an opposition, those days are long gone. PCB needs to look at the batting, there is hardly a single batsman that can be called 'international' quality. They can't even read the game properly how can one expect them to bat properly.

  • cricktwins on March 21, 2014, 18:26 GMT

As an indian fan I was really surprised about pak's batting lineup. why shoiab malik when pak already have 6 bowlers? too much defensive batting from malik, hafeez, ,shezad...Afridi, batti, gul, maqsood are all big hitters could send the ball long way if they got more than 10 balls to face.. they were completely under utilized by pak management.. bowl shoaib malik for 2 overs or play a power hitter like afridi in his place. limited power hitters like akmals, afridi (hit or miss), maqsood in the lineup. west indies, Oz has many.. like gayle, smith, samuel, sammy, bravo, russel etc aus hav warner, finch, bailey, watto, haddin, maxwell.

It's quite clear that Pakistani team binds itself into knots with nervousness when playing India in a world cup game. They put too much pressure on themselves and get swayed by the hype. Dhoni has to be credited for making sure he leads calmly and does not panic, it sure rubs off on to the team. Then there is Kohli, this guy has got nerves of steel. Anyways, a good game after a long time for India against the tournament favorites.

Pakistan lost because of inexperience and handling the pressure match. They just did not target the right bowlers. Taking on spinners was a bad option. Feel sorry for Malik, was aked to come in a play a high pressure match out of blue. Hope the batting clicks for Pakistan in reamaining matches and hoping for another pak vs India in the later stages of tournament. India you are peaking at the right time...Keep it up and Yuvraj, Rohit and Pace bowlers are the weak link in Indian team. • VKohlitheGreat on March 21, 2014, 18:20 GMT

@ psyuvaraj : I cant be 100% sure but i believe the ball reached the boundary before both the batsmen got to the other ends.

Poor captaincy from Hafeez, he never utilized his bowlers properly, he saved his best bowler for nothing, even he himself was bowling very good but, I don't know why he did such a ridiculous thing saving the overs of Junaid and Saeed instead of attacking with them, such a poor captain.

  • British_North_America on March 21, 2014, 18:18 GMT

I hope BD produce some magic and go to semifinal.BD of course cannot beat Pakistan but they should target the other three with some luck from Almighty. They should try to reduce the margin of loss against Pakistan and try to win big over West Indies.

  • PakSelectorsRbad on March 21, 2014, 18:17 GMT

@Munde....Sure replace Junaid and get Tanvir in...Need brains to win... and that kind of lacking now in Selectors and most of the team...Sohail is slower pace and not much difference in econ...Blame the selectors for including Akmals and Malik...Not Junaids fault..

  • ImpressiveTeer on March 21, 2014, 18:17 GMT

Though India won, I didn't feel the excitement. They never go for the Kill. They should have easily managed a bonus point today. I can understand this wasn't the match they can risk it, but it has become a tendency to play extra safe even against AFG or Bangladesh.

I would like to see someone go berserk at the top like Jayasuriya. People just don't do that anymore, not just India, all the teams.

  • on March 21, 2014, 18:14 GMT

India, a far better than any other Asian Teams....

Hope, our WC record against PAK, 9:0

  • kc69 on March 21, 2014, 18:14 GMT

Well as they say the difference between Afridi and Kohli's batting is that of a blacksmith and a goldsmith, as the saying goes 100 days of goldsmith and 1 day for blacksmith. However I did notice a lot of pressure on all Pakistani players today and calmness and confidence in Indian camp all probably because of Dhoni.I hope it goes on as in 2007 T20 WC rather than last WC where India did beat Pakistan but missed out the spot in Semis due to NRR.Good luck to both India and Pakistan.

  • Imran-Afzal on March 21, 2014, 18:14 GMT

Anyone noticed that All the Pakistani fast bowlers now a days started to bowl as M. Akram used to bowl ... short and in the middle of the pitch .... no swing , and no line and length ...

  • Big3BOSS on March 21, 2014, 18:12 GMT

The victory also was sweet revenge for India's last over loss at the same ground in the Asia Cup less than a month ago.

  • Hate.ME on March 21, 2014, 18:12 GMT

    @ VKohli

It is the same issue tht was in Sehwag Case in SL when he had hit a SIX and still he was denied a century as only 1 run or so was needed to win the match.

  • Nampally on March 21, 2014, 18:10 GMT

Congrats India for playing as a "Team". After a winnable game lost in Asia Cup vs. Pakistan, this victory appeared even sweeter! The best part was the contribution from the 3 spinners. I was also pleased that Dhoni did not drop Mishra- due to his dislike of the leg spinners. This paid off big time as Mishra was the Man of the Match. Jadeja & Ashwin also bowled accurately. The 3 spinners between them gave just 63 runs in 12 overs- 5.25/over! Sadly Yuvraj was just a passenger- 13 runs in the only over bowled + dropped catch+ bowled for 1. Yuvraj is not a #4 batsman as Dhoni is desperately trying to prove. He has failed so many times because his lack of footwork against pace bowlers. Does he deserve his place in the XI at the expense of either Rahane or Binny? Dhoni needs to put India above Yuvraj! Raina & Kohli once again played very responsibly to carry India to victory. Both Rohit & Dhawan "Hung on" somehow to get their runs against all odds. Openers need to show step improvement too!

  • deep_vaishnav on March 21, 2014, 18:09 GMT

Afridi should refrain to make comment that Pak team is best in the world. You won the match against India in Asia Cup by marginally due to young and unexperience team and you lost the final with Sri Lanka. Still you belive you are the best. Hope Afridi's feet now came back on earth. Action speaks and not words. Good luck PAK team for the rest of the tournament. You can't beat India in any WC.

  • VJbas on March 21, 2014, 18:05 GMT

@Night.angel: Wat else you want form Indian bowlers they bowled decent bowling in this match and troubled contained and made Pak batter to do mistake atleast if you are unable to credit there efforts please remain calm don't blame them...

  • TheProfPak on March 21, 2014, 18:04 GMT

To me the Pak captain and team management are to be blamed. Such a nonsense playing eleven, and on top of that sending Malik at wrong time; instead Sohaib should have been given the chance. The mentality of current team is well-described by Imran Khan i recent interview that they play with the fear of loosing the game in which case, you are bound to lose even having a commanding position. The great Khan's approach as he described was to take field with the mind-set of a winner, in which case, you can manage to win despite in an apparent hopeless situation. I don't know why oldies like Malik and K. Akmal find the space in current team. Sohaib should come at 4. He is a sort of player along with Akmal who are modern T20 Players.

  • on March 21, 2014, 18:03 GMT

I Wonder if Inform Fawad Alam could have played a Crucial role in this Match . He should have been there instead of Malik . Imran Nazir is another attacking Player who can be very Dangerous ? Where is he ?

Umar Gul is Struggling a bit . Pakistan Needs Gul to be at his best . Gul on Song can Bowl Yorkers at will .

  • on March 21, 2014, 18:00 GMT

Congrats to Ind team and commiserations to my Pak brothers..well played both team. Pak was 20 to 30 runs short...but Ind really outplayed pak today...Ajmal was the only threatening bower in Pak team if the opposition could somehow contain him then they could win the match without any hiccups....having said that Dhawan is not playing like the player he used to be...we must really have to find the best opening combination other than Dhawan and Rohit....

  • UK_Chap on March 21, 2014, 17:51 GMT

I don`t know what kind mental block that the Pakistan team have against India in these ICC tournaments, that`s some magic spell that the Indian team performs. Indian fans always get carried away, these are only one off games, granted they are in international tournaments. Pakistan really need to get this monkey off their back. When it comes to proper series Pakistan generally tend to fare better. Indian fans needs to ask themselves why don`t India play Pakistan in any kind of series in a neutral venue, history of the teams will tell you why they don`t.

  • PK_Express on March 21, 2014, 17:49 GMT

Well played India. Very disappointed in Pakistani Bowling. I have been following Junaid for a while and I must say that he is all bravado with little substance. Yes he seems to be a hard working bowler, but nothing spectacular-about average bowler. Gul is not the same for last two yrs or so. Tanvir should replace Junaid

  • on March 21, 2014, 17:48 GMT

nice to see such constructive and healthy comments, well played india and pak, but hard luck pakistan, wish you the best in other games.

  • getsetgopk on March 21, 2014, 17:48 GMT

Not that Pak batsmen are any good at the top or middle of an innings, they are terrible finishers. The last five overs, one expects an 'international' side to score at least ten an over especially with wickets in hand but our miserable batsmen are just bits and piece. Dont really know the dynamics of the game, when to score slow, when to fast and so on but the real issue is that those batsmen selected to play at this level aren't the ones we need. For a successful batsman, he should have a thinking head upon his shoulders and then have the necessary range of shots and power to some extent. Our batsmen have neither of that. They just play in their 'distinct' fashion, a few flukes once in a while but mostly club level stuff. Bemoaning the bowlers wont do, its owning up to facts and then a complete restructure of the entire is when Pak will take first steps towards possibly fielding a proper cricket team some day. Identifying who is your bowlers and who the batsmen would be a good start.

  • harryShamim on March 21, 2014, 17:48 GMT

Well played INDIA..Pakistan looked nervous right from start...Indian players are much more mature than Pakistani players...though Pakistan will make a come back and INSHAALLAH will qualify for quarter finals....

  • chirag_mav on March 21, 2014, 17:47 GMT

@VKohlitheGreat -- Exactly what I was thinking. Raina and Virat didn't even complete the run, so it was definitely not a single. It was definitely a boundary, and India's score should have been 134. By a quick calculation, India's NRR would have been 0.743 instead of 0.581. That is a huge difference. I hope someone takes it up with ICC.

  • Ind_Cric_Fan79 on March 21, 2014, 17:46 GMT

  • psyuvaraj on March 21, 2014, 17:46 GMT

@VKohlitheGreat, when you need only one run to win and the batsmen reached other ends (single run), before ball reaching boundary, boundary will not be awarded.

  • on March 21, 2014, 17:45 GMT

  • on March 21, 2014, 17:44 GMT

Despite promising very positive stances in the pre-match scenario against India, when it comes to a match in ICC Trophies, Pak seem to be a little bit unduly nervous, unlike India.

The much needed support of encouragement had been extended by the Pak veteran Cricketers like Imran, Miandad & Latiff etc, which was desperately needed by the Pak Team If Pak had scored another 25 to 30 runs more, it might have been an evenly poised game ,but that was not to be !

It was a little bit sad to see that Amit Mishra has played just 2 T20 I matches only Though there is no room for any ifs & buts,in Sports, the decision of keeping him, just to warm the benches in the recent ODI series for quite a long period than expected, would have realised by now. The decision to play with 3 spinners is a wise one.

Fielding by way of dropped catches at critical junctures by both the sides was an abnormal & dismal sight to watch in high profile Indo-Pak matches !

  • on March 21, 2014, 17:44 GMT

Shami looked the fastest bowler on display today. Frankly speaking, Pakistan batting is not up to v the scratch.

  • on March 21, 2014, 17:42 GMT

Dhoni did not use raina because the most of the pak batsmen are right handers. That is the reason why he used yuvraj instead of raina in bowling. It did'nt work. right or left, raina should be used as a bowler in T2o games.

  • awt786 on March 21, 2014, 17:42 GMT

So disappointing that it was not a more closer, exciting match as I was expecting, Pakistan lost their nerve sadly but hopefully will improve as the tournament goes on, but anyway, congrats to India, a thoroughly deserved win.

  • Passionate_Cricketer on March 21, 2014, 17:41 GMT

There are lot of maturity in the way people comment, these days. Good to see Pakistani ppl admiring Indian cricketers and vice versa. India still have lot of areas to look into. Dhawan was not in good nick as it appear and hopefully he can time the ball in coming games. Pakistan really need experience of Misbah in the middle to keep the strike rotating. Well, this is just the start and I wish both team do well in the coming games. Pakistan has many positive to take from this game even if they lost e.g. Maqsood who can hit the ball to perfection and Malik to consolidate the innings in the middle. India certainly will gain momentum and the inclusion of Mishra make the team appear strong. MSD is always calm and good to see Indians not doing anything silly. It's important to be a team player than to be a hero. India has lifted our hopes. Best of luck for boys in blue.

  • FRpunk on March 21, 2014, 17:35 GMT

So the Streak Continues . 9-0 it is . Well done the indian Bowlers . Fantastic Job guys , But Make Sure u r Consistent Throughout the Tournament . Raina and Dhoni have to Come Ahead of Yuvraj and use Yuvraj only as a Finisher . Yuvi is still a Match Winner and on his day can Turn around a Match in just a Single over Unlike Rahane .

Batting Should have been Better . Our Slow Batting Might affect our Chances Later on but all in all a Satisfactory Victory . Sweet Revenge for what happened in the Asia Cup ..,,,,,,,,

on the Side Note , i really Hope that Pitches Improve . This Pitch is Not Ideal for the T-20 Cricket . The Sylhet match was such an entertaining match because it was a High Scoring one . Screw the Theory of balance between the bat and Ball , Produce Flat Tracks for T-20 Cricket .

  • on March 21, 2014, 17:35 GMT

congratulations for complete clinical performance by india, the form of raina will be crucial for india to support kohli and dhoni, if yuvi finds his form, i cant see any bowling attack that stops this line up, and hope our bowling helps its batting power, and stand up if there is a batting failure(hope not). In 2007 wct20 india registered their first win against pak, will it be the same final.

  • on March 21, 2014, 17:34 GMT

Well well. Cricket is really very very funny game. And we fans are very very flexibles. A funny fact we are observing today itself too. Just 9/10 days back only, Afridi was like God Masiha for every Pakistani fan. And today after one match failure, where he was expensive in his bowling, dropped important catch of Raina & scored onky 8 runs in 10 balls in death overs, same fans are treating like a villain. Oh God. On the other hand after first warm up match we started praising Yuvraj. Remembered his 6 sixes inning against Brod. And today reading some comments ...what is Yuvraj doing in Indian team.....some one calling him 2 mt Maggy.... Agreed cricket is a funny game ! All the best India

  • Ross_the_Boss on March 21, 2014, 17:34 GMT

Well a nice easy victory of india inspite of the middle-inning wobble. Isnt there a case for pushing back yuvraj when two spinners are bowling on a turning wicket? Thanks to the true cricket-loving fans for their comments sans any acrimony. best of luck to both teams in remaining matches

  • gubbs716 on March 21, 2014, 17:33 GMT

Please correct me if I am wrong... India's run rate should be 7.24 instead of 7.08. Kohli had not reached the crease(should appreciate his presence of mind; he waited for the ball to cross the boundary!!). Hence Raina'a score should have been 38 instead of 35 and India's final score should have been 134 instead of 131, the simple reason being that it was a boundary instead of a single. 134/18.5 (0.3 over constitutes half a over: hence the denominator is 18.5 instead of 18.3) is 7.24 instead of 131/18.5= 7.08. Anybody remembers the Durban World Cup match between SA and SL in 2003??

  • LAKINGSFAN on March 21, 2014, 17:33 GMT

  • Ben2014 on March 21, 2014, 17:30 GMT

It is their first match. So India should not think about the run rate but concentrate on winning.. India rightly did that. In Netherland's case, there existed the run rate aspect. That's why they had to go for it. If and when that befalls India, that's when they need to "go for it". At this time, for any team, they should concentrate on winning... Congratulations India.

  • vick2025 on March 21, 2014, 17:30 GMT

It was great game to watch. The atmosphere is quiet predictable when India plays against Pakistan. From India's point of view, Amit Mishra was the player who managed to get those two wickets and ultimately winning this match. From Pakistan point of view...well....they just needed to make more runs. 130 runs against a team like India is just not enough. Being an Indian fan, I always enjoy the game between these two teams but I don't think India should get carried away too much from one win. They have a lot of work to do to keep this superb performance. And at the same time, all is not done for Pakistan, they just have to keep their batting line up and running and make more runs. Great game team India and hope you guys continue it this way.

  • TheLastJeed on March 21, 2014, 17:26 GMT

@Dhanna Ashwin bowler 24 balls out of which he conceded 12 dot balls and the Pakistan batsmen played just 3 attacking shots. All others were blocked. He bowler all the deliveries against right handers and two overs in powerplay. Just let me know when Mishra bowls in powerplay against left handers and maintain the figure. Slap in the face indeed.

  • indianzen on March 21, 2014, 17:26 GMT

On paper, Pak a better T20 side than India. A little over confident and lack of experience cost this game. I think Pak batsmen did not know how to pace their innings... Ajmal was introduced too early and ideally you needed one more full time spinner...

  • pitch_curator on March 21, 2014, 17:25 GMT

Great win by India and I am very happy. Yuvi needs to click but he has seen it before and all he needs is one or two boundaries and some team in the league stage will suffer at his hands. For a change the death bowling was very good and except for a couple of balls in the last over Shami was very good with hs torkers and odd bouncer. Mishra was excellent and he will be a key player as India play all their league games in Mirour where the ball is gripping and turning. I am disappointed with Pakistan's performance. They were never in the game. Why are they playing such lackluster defensive cricket? They only need to look at how Pakistan teams played in the 90s. Just come out and express their talents which they have in abundance. 130 was simply not enough, it will not be enough even against minnow team like BD. We need that aggressive attacking Pak team to give us entertainment for the rest of the tournament. Shoaib Malik is a spent force. What happened to Razzak? Is he injured?

  • Cpt.Meanster on March 21, 2014, 17:25 GMT

  • getsetgopk on March 21, 2014, 17:25 GMT

Ever imagined why are there so many allrounders in Pak side? Well they are not good at batting and to survive and cling on to their places in the team they have discovered a way of staying in the team by bowling bits and piece stuff. Hafeez is great example, he's not a proper batsman and I am just tired of saying that over and over. He's no good on green tops and hit and miss on flat tracks. This should never have been allowed in the first place by the management and the selectors. If you are there playing as a top order batsman then deliver as a top order batsman or else LEAVE. PCB has allowed mediocrity to strengthen its roots in the team by allowing such players in the team who are neither batsmen nor bowlers. There is no proper keeper in this team and there are no proper batsmen and the 'fans' think their team is out there to beat the world. Fine, these bits and piece players like Hafeez will win you a game here and there but thats about it. Now lets stop day dreaming.

congratulations team india and fans. Dhoni's captaincy is great.many mistakes from Pakistan.kohli raina and rohit played well.respect from Pakistan

  • on March 21, 2014, 17:24 GMT

Despite promising a very positive stance, when it comes to a match in ICC Trophies, Pak seem to be a little bit unduly nervous, unlike India. If Pak had scored another 25 to 30 runs more, it might have been an evenly poised game ,but that was not to be !

It was a little bit sad to see that Amit Mishra has played just 2 T20 I. Though there is no room for any ifs & buts,in Sports, the decision of keeping him, just to warm the benches in the recent ODI series for quite a long period than expected, would have realised by now. The decision to play with 3 spinners is a wise one.

Fielding by way of dropped catches at critical junctures by both the sides was an abnormal sight to watch in Indo-Pak matches !

  • bul98 on March 21, 2014, 17:24 GMT

WC matches or any other matches between PAK vs IND, they all thave the same pressure and expection from both countries fans. They are no different then any other match, just like couple weeks back the game in Asia Cup it was the same hype and pressure. Overall PAK has the upperhand in both Tests, ODI and IND has upperhand in T20. Good Luck Green Shirts foir future games and WIN or lose, PAK fans luv you!

  • byc89 on March 21, 2014, 17:23 GMT

This is a comfortable win by India. I do not know why Dhoni gave Yuvraj the bowl and not to Raina. Yuvraj did not bowl even a single delivery in any practice match while Raina bowled 4 overs in 1 warm up game.

  • Mustafa008 on March 21, 2014, 17:21 GMT

The Pakistan did not choose the best team, they need to re-call Imran Nazir, Abdul Razzak and Nasir Jamsheed. If this team will play then it is difficult. However atleast now they should realize and re-call Abdul Razzak at any coast.

  • on March 21, 2014, 17:21 GMT

It was a great game of cricket. Apart from Yuvi's form, everything went well for India. Pakistan looked very nervous to start with but we all know how dangerous a side they are and they will surely come back in games to come. Looking forward to many more tough battles in this group.

Well played India. Pakistan was extremely nervous and had no clue. They should bring the best players (not parchi players). We enjoy Pakistan Vs India. Hopefully, we will see both teams in the T20 final. Well done India. From Pakistani

  • Sudhir65 on March 21, 2014, 17:20 GMT

Only 4 runs in last 2 Ajmal overs when India knew match is won. Very conservative. This will hurt them in NRR department eventually. Poor captaincy and poor thinking.

  • on March 21, 2014, 17:20 GMT

Hey hey hey...a little more credit is due to India perhaps? Its not a case of Pakistan trying too many things and India being idea less and waiting aka an Ali lying back on the ropes types. Did you expect Dhoni to open the bowlingwith Ashwin? Did you expect him to playAmit Mishra when Ashwin was saidto be his blue eyed boy and Mishra the man that Dhoni will never play becauseAshwin was thechosen one? And yes.. Kohli is Tendulkars true successor.

  • on March 21, 2014, 17:19 GMT

i would like to say one thing more that Raina in the middle of overs (when hafiz was batting with shehzad) told that please save your wicket otherwise Shehzad will ran you out like Akmal ........ anyone disagreed?

  • Cpt.Meanster on March 21, 2014, 17:19 GMT

It is unfortunate that many people simply don't appreciate the Indian bowling. Indian bowlers OUT BOWLED Pakistan today. The Indian spinners were magnificent and the fast bowlers were pretty decent except Yuvi's over. So much is said about Pakistani bowling but I think their ONLY bowling threat is Saeed Ajmal. The rest are good but not dangerous. So India played them smartly. It was clear from the body language right from the start that India were up for this game more than Pakistan. Pakistan were nervous, timid and didn't have a strategy. MS Dhoni is not called Captain Cool for nothing. He smartly rotated his spinners. Sure, India did have some lapses in the field but overall a clinical performance. Well done and God bless.

  • on March 21, 2014, 17:18 GMT

A good match Indeed. Was not as easy for India as it might have looked at the end of the first inning. Pakistan bowled well and kept the pressure and that is why India took 18 point something overs to win. India could have taken more risks and won it earlier but maybe it was better to play safe and just win it. Like last match, we do not want RR to come into play. Well played both teams. But Pakistan needs to learn how to handle pressure. It is a game afterall and not a war.

  • USA_Raj on March 21, 2014, 17:18 GMT

Great all round performance by the Indian team to get World T20 started off on the right foot. Feel bad for Yuvi though - he needs to get his game face on and psyche himself up for the match. The bowling was supposed to be the weak link but they showed up for the game today. And it was fun watching cool Kohli and rollicking Raina get the runs in the end in a very business like manner. Sir Jadeja did not get a chance to bat but he may be the best all-rounder in T20 today. There were a few lapses in the field which need to be eliminated for India to go deep into the tournament.

It was great to see the two teams shake ends at the end of the game!

  • on March 21, 2014, 17:18 GMT

  • on March 21, 2014, 17:17 GMT

the better team won , thank you pak for the victory

  • Harmony111 on March 21, 2014, 17:17 GMT

An expected win but disappointing to see the kind of shot played by Dhawan. He got out at a crucial moment playing an awkward shot. Had he got out at covers trying to hit a 4 or 6 that would have been digestible.

In the last WT20 too, India won easily vs Pak but had slowed down in their chase instead of quickening up. IIRC, in that match, had India won in 16.4 overs, their NRR wud have gone above Pak meaning a win (any which way) vs SA wud have sufficed.

Here too, India could have tried to win in 16-17 overs but we showed no urgency. Our group is tough & Aus/WI are no pushovers. Moreover, these teams are well known for hammering minnows while India tends to be soft on them.

It was imperative that we made full use of today's low chase but we didn't.

Yuvi seems to have completely lost it. He can barely last 5 balls these days & gets clean bowled too. 1 over for 13 runs, a dropped catch & 1 off 2 balls. Yuvi of 2014 is so much away from the 6 sixer Yuvi of 2007 & MVP of WC2011.

  • twistatwistaa on March 21, 2014, 17:16 GMT

boring match, almost all the pakistan matches now a days are boring, how can someone play so defensive , they are just not ready too attack, not one single batsman wants too attack not even in depth overs. i seriously cant believe there approach or planing

  • cricdick on March 21, 2014, 17:16 GMT

Dignified India with clinical efficiency out classed with a big margin and a quality cricket. Pakistan played good cricket too.I was eager to see boom boom but went bust.

  • on March 21, 2014, 17:16 GMT

India has proved them wrong, who believed that they are a weak blowing side as compared to Pakistan. In my opinion India today had more bowling options than Pakistan. Their decision to play only two quick bowlers paid off whereas, 75 runs were conceded in just 8.3 overs by Umer Gul, Junain and Bilawal. It will be wise for Pakistan to play remaining group matches with only two fast bowlers and include Zulfiqar Babar. Keeping in view pitch condition, Shoaib Malik should have been given couple of overs instead of expensive Umer Gul and Junain. In fact although Pakistan selectors have selected best possible squad, yet they are no match to present Indian & Australian T20 sides. Looking for a miracle to see Pakistan qualify for the semi final.

  • on March 21, 2014, 17:15 GMT

Honestly speaking it was the most unexpected start of the ICC T20 2014 World Cup. Pakistan needs to look into certain aspects very quickly. Afridi need more time to regain his 100% fitness as his struggle was apparent on the field today, use this match winner intelligently may be in later stage where winning any match is crucial followed by knockout stage. Pakistan Team played this match with lots of pressure whereas India read & handled the game better. Indian batsman handled so called bowling fire of Pak sensibly, Dhawan's assault to Ajmal, Dropping catches, missing line & length infron of in-form Kohli n Raina was too much. Match which actually so unlike past matches. Bravo India...

  • Sudhir65 on March 21, 2014, 17:15 GMT

I think India missed a great chance to achieve a much higher NRR, which would come into play. With only 3 wickets down, they did not seem in a hurry to chase down a very low score of 130.

  • cooljack_143 on March 21, 2014, 17:14 GMT

Ind had well worked against Afridi(the fluke player),a hot or miss player. They didnt provide any spin for him and had to work his way out for his runs, i THINK THE BEAUTIFUL YORKERS BY sHAMI HAD UNDONE THE BOOM BOOM here. Here on Pak has a very minute chance to get to Semis, their batting is weak & Bowing is average, by now other teams hav had worked them.Leave Ajmal and play others.Ind on the other side need to quickly DROP UV & Get Rahane in, he is a better fielder & batsmen. Bhuvi needs to be dropped & Mohit given a chance. That will be it for Ind to get to semis.Ind should be beating Bangla & Either of WI /OZ.But they need to do it quickly,Not like this match going to the wire, where NRR would play in the end.MSD need to concntrate on this for sure, else Ind will be out soon.

  • rizwan_1992 on March 21, 2014, 17:14 GMT

Agree with Shamshad. Malik is just a liability. Kamran though, at least relieve Umar of his keeping duties. Don't know when will Pakistani batsman learn to rotate the strike in the middle. They negate all the effect of a boundary in an over with the dot balls. India is definitely a cooler side. They just wait for Pakistan to self explode. This strategy has always worked for them in WC's. Pakistan need to learn to stay calm during important matches. The nervous start at Asia Cup final also cost them the cup too. They just can't rely on Afridi's heroics every time. The quicker he gets into form, even more quickly he gets out of form. Anyways, this match was more of Pakistan losing rather than India winning. But credit goes to India for staying composed. Mishra was particularly impressive.

  • Srilanka-rules on March 21, 2014, 17:13 GMT

As a neutral watching this match, I wonder why India discards Amit Mishra who is a superior bowler than Ashwin in the matches.

Ashwin bowls to the pads to get dot balls, Mishra flights the ball to take wickets. A beautiful leg-spinner turning the balls is something to watch for.

    Wrong selection for India.

For Pakistan, Why in the whole world they drpped Mishab at the first place? Hafeez though can play some good shots is nowhere near the level of consistency that Misbah offers. And Shoaib seriously? Does pakistan require another all-rounder to already impressive bowling options? They should've opted for a more competent batsmen

    Wrong selection for Pak

  • on March 21, 2014, 17:13 GMT

Well done india, too bad from Pkistan. But defeat hurt just a little not much because it was on the cards before start of match, i gave 35, 65 to india, and after pak batting it didnt shock. Sorry Kahvas - no way has Salman Butt "paid his due" - it will be a sad day for cricket if he is ever allowed back in a ground, far less on the pitch. Would like to see Amir back before too long - he was young and powerless - Butt was old enough to know better and the captain.

That issue aside - well played India - a deserved victory and looking good to advance to the knock out stages - then it's a lottery.

Hope NZ take advantage of England's disarray tomorrow and get 2 pts and a healthy NRR.

  • on March 21, 2014, 17:11 GMT

Let India not get too carried away here. Opening pair is scratchy and pace bowling is always a weak link. One of these games India will have to bat first and it will be a struggle to defend anything less than 140.

  • Rexton87 on March 21, 2014, 17:10 GMT

I am a Pak fan but they did not have a chance in hell to beat India with their cool composure and clinical approach. The sight of Kamran Akmal was awful to watch with his nervous glare and that single he attempted had run out written all over it. Only in Pakistan a player of Hafeez's calibre can get to be Captain. T20 is not won by making 50 in 10 overs the game ended there for me. You have to put your hard hitting batsmen at the top like Shahzeb,Sharjeel,Maqsood and Afridi and play with a sense of urgency and freedom. Ramiz Raja's analysis where he praised 50 runs partnership in 7 hours between Malik and Umar Akmal and making predictions for 150 ,it was obvious it is not going to go beyond 129 and so it proved.

  • vkumar_086 on March 21, 2014, 17:10 GMT

Friends please please dont critisise any Indian player. Rohit, Shikhar, Virat, Yuvraj, Raina, Dhoni & entire bowling unit, everybody has match winning qualites. Today it was just start we got. Still long way to gon this tournament. We have allready suffered lot in 2014, mejorly due to poor fielding & inexperienced bowling attack. Today we bowled verywell but still dropped few catches. Lucky, no catch prooved costely like Williamson, Maccullum & Sangakara. So buck up Indian team. Reading many negative comments against Yuvraj specially. No need to worry atall. Yuvraj very soon will come in in sublime touch. He too need some space. He & Raina returned in the team. Raina had a goid match. Three catches & 31 no. Thiugh he too got life twice, he remained notout. And its definately going to help him in next match against WI. Well Rohit repeated his performance against Pakistan in Asia Cup. Today again he hit two superb sixes to Gul & Junaid like Asia Cup. Dhavan/ Rohit gave very good start.

  • Rajesh.Kumar on March 21, 2014, 17:05 GMT

This Pakistan team is a very weak team, therefore, we should not become too happy with this victory. Our main challengers in this group are West Indies and Australia. I hope Dhoni is planning to clear the group stage undefeated. WI is a very dangerous team, so team India will have to be really at the top of their game to defeat WI. I have always said team India wins when it matters the most, like in ICC tournaments, where its record vis-a-vis Pakistan is completely undefeated. I am glad that our selectors sent an experimental team for Asia Cup which is a very unimportant tournament. This allowed players like Dhoni and Raina a lot of physical and mental rest. And it also allowed Amit Mishra to play in the ODIs and he carried his good form in T20s. Now Raina seems to be in such a tremendous form that things are looking good at least for now. Asia cup experiment also allowed the selectors to test Rahane and Ambati Rayudu which is also good for the future.

  • cvenka on March 21, 2014, 17:05 GMT

CONGRATS TEAM INDIA. I expected them to bounce back after the Asia cup & what a way to do that! The only worrying aspect is Yuvi form all round...may be pujara can be looked as an option

well played my team... people.wanted raina to be sacked...seriously guys...he is specialist in middle order...he was clearly missed in Asia cup.. and he is best fielder of India.... just a matter of time uv will be back with big performance... and oh man dint amith mishra impressed us all???? he was damn good.... and lol surprise ball from jadeja lol... excellent all round performance overall... still you guys need to show urgency in finishing games... net run rate was the villain for us in last WC...hope it doesn't this time... great....this was hyped and one way match...fair enough

  • Karthik78 on March 21, 2014, 17:04 GMT

Pakistan is completely out played by India. No fighting at all, at least India's second string team fought till last over in the last ODI. As usual, once in blue moon Afridi failed again. Any batsmen will have a blue moon day like Afridi had in last ODI, but so much unusual hype about it and so paid the price.

  • gannyboy on March 21, 2014, 17:03 GMT

To be honest am surprised that we won so easily today. For India spin is the way to go, restricting a side to 130 is a terrific job done. The Indian openers though still looked a bit dodgy and unsettled, but the job was well finished by the ever dependable Kohli and an energetic Raina. I think Ashwin should open the bowling in both the t-20's and the ODI's, he is just a different bowler when he has a new ball in his hand. Misheard just showed what a good leg spinner can do and Jadeja was terrific as usual. But the most important feature of today's game was MSD's captaincy. He wad simply outstanding the break came at the right moment for him.

  • BowledYa on March 21, 2014, 17:02 GMT

Even though a Pak fan, I would have to agree with Indian fans regarding the choke factor against India in WC matches - a paltry 130 runs is all this batting lineup could muster? 2 overs in the last five had 5-6 runs in all - what's up with that when you still have 5 wickets left? Deplorable batting performance against one of the weakest bowling teams!

  • IAS2009 on March 21, 2014, 17:01 GMT

poor team selection cost the game, what is the point of Malik if he did not bowl, I think Gul playing days for Pakistan is over also, Pakistan need clean hitters and people like Maqsood who score quick without slogging. Pakistan bowling have been poor in Bangladesh even in Asia cup, bowlers bowled poorly especially fast bowlers cannot keep pressure at all. from 63 for 3 they could but they didn't, Only Ajmal was any threat. I don't think Malik should be in team, shehzad and umar akmal have to cut on slogging shots on these slow wickets, Pakistan have dug them selves a hole and have to get out of it, the curse of not beating India in WC is getting on nerves of Pakistan team, at least in this situation they have the loss out of the way early in tournament, and i hope they don't have to face India anymore if they go deep in the tournament and peak at right time. Good luck against aussies,

Its all about how a single player handles pressure while in the center of situation, sorry to say that Pak skipper didn't even bother to put pressure on the batsmen after poor performance with bat. Being a batsman he knew already that the pitch was gripping, turning and slow then why did he used his fast bowlers? he himself bowled very well then he should have handed the ball to malik. Anyway its all about, one who make right decisions always get fruit of it,. Being Pak fan, i absolutely admire Indian side for their match winning performance even they were poor in the fielding side. Congratulations to the Well deserving team.

@ ramz30380...yes i also felt same, with strike rate of 91 in ODI's and 140 in T-20's.....we were missing him in Asia cup especially Jadeja was fighting alone in slog overs, Raina is one of the best finisher along with Dhoni

We Indians knew that Sri lankans will always support its better you to support Pak in other games but not against India....the same kind of thrashing is waiting for SL....if they meet INDIA in semi final or in Final.....

  • on March 21, 2014, 16:59 GMT

I think this time too India are gonna scratch their heads when NRR situation arrives. This was small total. India could have chased it with 4 overs to spare that would have boosted the NRR. Not sue what is Yuvi doing. He is just riding with one performance against the Aussies in India.

They have Misbah but didn't bother to pick him. Pathetic . And Ind's bowling is THE poor though they did perform well today. Wonder what happens when Indian batting + Paki Bowling combine together?

  • on March 21, 2014, 16:57 GMT

    Congrats team India........

  • on March 21, 2014, 16:56 GMT

Poor game by PAk. looked like they didnt have any plan for it. and were shell shocked when India put them to bat 1st. first 3-4 overs showed that they were so much shaky and looked like playing 1st game in career. Running between wickets.

Kamran looked good but run out by Shehzad. Hafeez was just in a shell by spinners and in the end fell to that pressure. Shehzad was terrible among all of them. the shot he played was going no where.

Though malik-umar did had an ok partnership but fell at wrong time. malik was slow in that partnership and never that much comfortable. But 16,17,18 just 8 runs with afrid, umar& maqsood. Afridi has a bad day with bat, ball & even at slips. talk of form doesnt matter with him much. doesnt looked like connecting anything today.

Simply not enough runs on board but still bowling was not up to mark. Gul, Junaid & Afridi totally ineffective. Only Ajmal looked threatening.

Tough games coming up. 1 more error and it will be over.

  • bouncer709 on March 21, 2014, 16:56 GMT

well afridhi is back to form I guess...someone was expecting a hundred from him and 200 from pak... get real guys....

  • BowledYa on March 21, 2014, 16:56 GMT

Serious flaws in Pak strategy led to this result being a foregone conclusion. First, picking 3 fast bowlers when everyone was saying spin is going to be the key - did we not learn from the Asia Cup that the fast bowlers are sitting ducks in BD? Second, why put Shoab Maqsood so low in the batting order? He should have come in where they sent Shoab Malik who is lacking international experience of late and played too slow. Finally, as as always our batsmen look for big hits, taking singles, doubles and a 4 in an over will net 8 runs an over average and 160-170 score. That's what's needed not 12 in one over at a cost of 2 wickets. I couldn't disagree more with Imran Khan and few others who thought Afridi was the key - he is once in a blue moon performer, and we need consistency match after match.

Awesome victory by India. Good strategy to bowl first and chase. The weak link of India, the bowlers delivered. Unexplainable the freakish streak by India over Pakistan in ICC tournaments. The Akmal brothers are supremely talented and yet underperform and that's another twilight zone mystery for me. The Pakistan openers looked a bit tense and that led to the disastrous run out and maybe falling thirty runs short overall. Delighted that India won but the match missed that extra edge and needle finishes that India - Pakistan encounters are known for.

  • kahvas on March 21, 2014, 16:51 GMT

I dont know why Pakistanis always boast about their bowling lineup. Agreed, Ajmal is the #1 bowler in the world, but the rest of the pack is not extraordinary. Afridi does Ok, pacers maybe good once in a blue moon. Pakistani's surely dont have the akram's and Akhtar's anymore. One way for Pakistan to start winning is to get Salman Butt back, he has payed his due and I think is a world class batsman. May not be as classy as Saeed Anwar but definately has a lot of talent. I feel Butt is definately in the top 3 in the list of young Asian batsman. I loved his batting in Australia. Indian fan here.

  • Stark62 on March 21, 2014, 16:49 GMT

malik was meant to be the tormentor of Ind, so what happend?

He was specifically selected for this game and he failed, so what do you do now?

Sharjeel hasn't been in great touch either but not playing him today was a big blunder because he could have played at no. 5 today, to tackle the leg-spin of Mishra and sla of Jadeja.

Management seems to be bereft of ideas and isn't thinking much at all.

  • on March 21, 2014, 16:49 GMT

India played very well in the big match, despite having a rough patch going into the tournament. For Pakistan, they need to hold their nerves and learn to tackle pressure better. Pakistan fan.

"what is afridi doing in slips"..... He is Lala ...He can do everything. He won 2 matches for Pak. How can you question him. He will stay wherever he wants to including Wicket keeping!!!

Excellent performance team india. Now at least few people should notice that India will not talk rather their performance speaks. This is not just a record of India 4 Pakistan 0 its not track record that india beat Pakistan in T20 world cups but its all time record of beating Pakistan in 50 overs version also.

  • on March 21, 2014, 16:44 GMT

Well friends. Now please dont blame Yuvraj for his failure as you always repeatedly doing with Rohit. After failure in warm up matches Rohit & Shikhar gave an excellent start today in main match. Both were failed in warm up matches. Dhavans boundries against Ajmal and Rohit two sixes against Junaid & Gul were simply superb ! That is why Rohit is a right choice for opening with Dhavan. And Dhoni rightely stick with him only. Today Yuvraj got out cheaply. Its ok. Even Raina should have in pavellion cheaply. Got life twice. Afridi droped his catch when he was just about 6/7 runs. But Raina had better luck than Yuvi. Please buck up Yuvi. He us match winner. Definately time will come very soon when we see our Yuvraj will be on sky. Today but natural we are happy as we won the mist important match against Pakistan. Pakistan did today exactely samething due to what India suffered so far in 2014. Poor fielding. Afridi should have grabbed the opportunity to hold catch of Raina. ATB team India.

  • Cpt.Meanster on March 21, 2014, 16:43 GMT

Congratulations INDIA !!! Well done beating Pakistan so convincingly. Pakistan once again let down by poor batting and some ordinary captaincy from Hafeez. Pakistan will now face a tough challenge against Australia and West Indies. India are off to a fantastic start and this win will give them immense confidence. Well done boys.

  • Big3BOSS on March 21, 2014, 16:43 GMT

India's three specialist spinners have bowled 33 dot balls and taken three wickets. Pakistans spinners gave away more runs probably and 1 wkt.

For all the hype about the streak finally going to end....Indias world cup record stays intact.I guess the revenge victory awaited since 1992 is bieng postponed one year this time around...used to be 4 years once upon a time but thanks to T20 bieng held every 2 years the revenge waiting time will only be postponed by year or two now onwards.I guess its 3-0 ( not including the superover win of 2007 ) in T20s and 5-0 in Worldcups. Nice record any team would love to have over their arch rivals.

  • Devmanus on March 21, 2014, 16:42 GMT

Congratulations to both the teams India and Pakistan for playing the match. In the end India wins but Yuvraj looks like a thinking man with lots of things going on in his mind. boom boom was a flop show. Rohit was ok, Dhawan was again a concern but his asolt on Ajmal was worth to watch, I feel this is the only way to get runs from Ajmal. Ajmal really missing the equally good spin bowler on the other end. I feel that will really really make a huge huge difference. now a days players just play him out. again congrats India and Pakistan.

  • on March 21, 2014, 16:42 GMT

Right from the beginning of the game 2 things became very apparent.Pakistanis were nervous and had no clue of what they wanted to achieve. On the other hand,India had a game plan and carried it out with perfection beginning with winning the toss.

  • on March 21, 2014, 16:42 GMT

Pakistan got themselves into a hopeless situation including Shoaib Malik and Kamran Akmal in theTeam.

  • thozar on March 21, 2014, 16:42 GMT

So India's dominance over Pakistan in world cup games continues. This was as easy a victory as one could imagine. It is still early days but India are well on their way to their 2nd world cup title. We deserve it after a few months of total bad luck. Nothing more needs to be said about Kohli as he is the best in the world. But Raina has been a surprise although I for one never doubted his abilities in limited over cricket. After all, he is the most successful batsman in the IPL and has done extremely well for India in limited overs cricket. Terrific comeback. Way to go kid.

Yuvraj will come good soon,he is too good not to.And the spinners were way too good for the opposition. Mishra was a terrific addition to the XI. The two pacemen were not as successful as the spinners but they did a good job. Shami is the best debutant for last year and I think he has the ability to become the best in the world.Bhuvi has already proved that he is the best when it comes to bowling with the new ball.

  • on March 21, 2014, 16:41 GMT

    well played india

  • on March 21, 2014, 16:41 GMT

Everything went wrong for Pakistan since the toss was made. Kamran Sohail and Shohaib are liabilities.. I don't see them winning any matches in their group level if they keep this same team.

  • blissfully_ignorant on March 21, 2014, 16:40 GMT

india's ipl experience comes handy for pakistan ,they have playing away from their home for so long that it is beginning to to tell on their psyche..5 years and still no match being held in pak!its time other teams started playing them at karanchi, multan, islamabad etc..wins at home in front of home crowd has no match.all positives there...

  • Dhanno on March 21, 2014, 16:39 GMT

MoM Mishra, congrats. Slap in face of Ashwin. Always in team, the king of darts. Keep bowling quick, keep RR at 6 and be generally the model for decline of spin all over world. Then comes a Mishra who probably has to wonder what he should do to get a look in. And when he gets that what results is t beautiful stumping which for a second I thought Dhoni would mess up.

  • Oracle_Magus on March 21, 2014, 16:36 GMT

It's good to see a wonderful all round performance by the Indians. A sensible approach for a small run chase. The Openers never let the bowlers built up the pressure by controlled aggression and after their departure both Raina and Virat held fort and ensured there are no more surprises. With all big guns in this group, they have already registered a win and got the advantage. Except Ajmal no one looked like they can put a breaks on the Indian Batsmen. Pak is a great team and they are sure to bounce back with all guns blazing. But today was India's day. Good Show boys. Cheers!

  • Nortox on March 21, 2014, 16:36 GMT

I simply don't understand the logic to play Umer Gul.. His poor form cost us Asia Cup and now i dont see this bowling attack winning from the likes of Australia & West indies with their aggressive and dynamic batting line ups..

Selection team sucks & Bowling coach Akram has ruined this pace attack :(

  • kc69 on March 21, 2014, 16:34 GMT

  • on March 21, 2014, 16:34 GMT

Pakistan below standard team. they are not like super 10. congrats India.

  • binojpeter on March 21, 2014, 16:33 GMT

India bowled well in this match. 130 was never going to be enough in a T20 match.

  • on March 21, 2014, 16:33 GMT

Well bowled by India. They had a plan and executed it very well. 3 Spinners were superb and Have to give credit to dhoni the way he managed his bowlers. Raina-Kohli & openers did well.

And they played calm cricket unlike pakistan who looked nervous like they are playing their 1st game.

Somethings can never change for paksitan. Their inconsistency. &poor batting. Top3 were too much nervous and shaky. Kamran looked good but a run out, then near run outs.

They were totally pushed to the walls by indian spinners. 50 in 10 overs too slow.

Malik-Umar did have a decent partnership but When time came they were not good enough.

Overs 16,17,18: only 8 runs with Umar, Afridi&Maqsood there is criminal.

Not a day to remember for Afridi with bat, ball & in slips dropping a catch.

Not enough runs but simply not much threat in pak bowling. Apart from Ajmal all were not even threatening.

Simply not enough runs. Tough group have to do well in remaining games to make it to semis.

  • on March 21, 2014, 16:32 GMT

Congrats India. Played really well. Pakistan still need to start attacking soon rather than wait till the death overs.

  • Yousufahmed1 on March 21, 2014, 16:30 GMT

India repeating the same mistake like in the last T20 WC, they won comfortably against PAK but didn't show the urgency to finish the game earlier and boost their run rate, hence India was out of the WC even after losing only one game. I hope that doesn't happen again. Good Luck.

  • on March 21, 2014, 16:26 GMT

India is bit too over cautious by not pushing the net run rate. Knowing their bowlers won't be same (economic) like in other matches. Common Team India..

  • on March 21, 2014, 16:20 GMT

Someone tell Yuvi to play straight for few balls in his initial stay at crease.. He just needs an innings to kick on.. Seems he still lives on the past cherish on back of his mind which stops him play freely. He must enjoy his stay in the team. Come on Yuvi..

  • on March 21, 2014, 16:18 GMT

Dhanno. Well said. I think this is Yuvraj's final chance. Lets see how he does in the rest of the tournament. He has zero foot work and other Teams are aware of his weakness. He is still vulnerable against the short ball but thats ok in this format. I think Yuvi has a long way to go and work hård in the nets.

  • seo7seo on March 21, 2014, 16:17 GMT

Thats what everyone in Pakistan was expecting. The return of Kamran and Shoaib had pulled fan's moral down even before the tournament. In my city, majority is NOT watching this match as we all knew the result before this match had started.

Instead of looking for some good hitters in 20-20 format, PCB selected Shoaib and Kamran. I guess other players play for the country. They are not responsible to cover up "non-meritorial" selections. I appeal ICC to do something about those players (kamran and shoaib) who make the crowd run even before match.

  • on March 21, 2014, 16:14 GMT

Surely Rohit is not here for as opener. He must be in after Raina after 1D. Kholi should open in for both T20 and ODI until they find someone like Uttapa or Shewag in opening.

  • xtrafalgarx on March 21, 2014, 16:14 GMT

I just don't see the 'talent' that the Pakistani's talk about. The batsmen are hit and miss, the allrounders are bits and pieces players, the bowling is not as good as it is made out to be, the fielding is as atrocious as ever. I can't see them making it past the super 10's.

  • on March 21, 2014, 16:14 GMT

  • TRAM on March 21, 2014, 16:06 GMT

It is obvious Yuvraj has lost his eye and reflexes. Dhoni gave him all opportunities. The way he did not figure the trajectory of the ball and not moving his feet when he got out... And how slowly he moved on the field when he dropped the catch. It is less than club level skill now.

  • on March 21, 2014, 16:04 GMT

  • Dhanno on March 21, 2014, 16:00 GMT

Only thing surprising about that Yuvraj wicket was he survived Ajmal. And it was not a bouncer and not all the stumps were flattened. BEsides that a Yuvi failure was just absolutely given. Why select him in a team for a premier event when you just had Rahane do all the hard legwork in SA and NZ ? If one has to pay visit to crease just to get out and look absolutely labored to bowl 6 balls you can pick almost any indian kid.

  • on March 21, 2014, 15:57 GMT

Yuvraj is suffering from 'foot in crease' disease.

  • on March 21, 2014, 15:55 GMT

Sharma just got carried away by Kohli's wonderful cut against Afridi. Firstly Sharma is low on form and ability compared to Kohli, secondly Kohli was cutting a leg spinner where as Sharma was trying to cut an off spinner. Doesn't speak too highly of Sharma's intelligence.

The spinners doing a wonderful job to restrict. Pak to 130 looks like an encouraging trend for India. Dhoni should be Happy.Misbah's Absence clearly felt. Afridy magic also did not work today with the result the result of the match could be in favor of India unless Syed Ajmal or Sahid Afridy play magic with the Ball. But ashes Ajmal is not reliable as he thinks himself to be.Afridy might strike on the other hand. But still 130 looks like a Paltry score to challenge a mighty batting side consisting of Raina,Yuvaraj,Dhoni & Jadeja besides the openers. Let us see what is going to happen

  • vkumar_086 on March 21, 2014, 15:12 GMT

131 is par below score (less than 8 runs which they score in previous T20 world cup against India) for Indian batting line up....Pak is always under pressure when they play against India in world cups....a psychological edge, and India utilized that very well.....India should chase this total well inside 15 overs without losing more than 2 net run rate is going to play crucial role....India should utilize this opportunity and boost its guessing an easy cake walk for India...Pak has to wait for their first win against INDIA in ICC events till next world cup 2015

By Restricting the Paks to 130, India has won the first half of the battle. Now it's up to the batsmen to step up. Paks have a great bowling unit and they will come all guns blazing especially since this match is against India. MSD has shuffled the bowlers well, Raina has been excellent as ever with the catches, the spinners were fantastic Every player gave their 100% here. In a high intensity match there will be dropped catches, so we not look too much into that. Overall it has been a great performance by our boys on the field so far. Let's wish them the best and watch the Chase. Cheers!

But I believe Shehzad, Hafeez, good old Misbah are better at longer format. As always, very good pakistan team again made themselves ordinary infront of an indian team...Its like they are saying "Come on indians, you are better than us.. please defeat us"....I think the Pakistan is the much better team but in battles with india they are mentally not tough enogh...

  • ICCexpert.... on March 21, 2014, 14:13 GMT

Malik is playing for his position not for team. He is playing like a test match.

  • Dhanno on March 21, 2014, 14:13 GMT

From the looks of it, Yuvi has handled the ball for first time in years. Its a labored practice attempt before he begins to bowl. Welcome to few long hops then. Why O why then the team selects 5 bowlers if you have to give to someone who has not bend his arms in years (just look at the video where yuvi is practicing few throwdowns right before he bowls)

I have a feeling this is looking good for Pak. Indias looked undercooked to me. Inshallah, Allah will bring us victory just like in the Asia cup :-)

  • on March 21, 2014, 14:10 GMT

    pak in problem

  • on March 21, 2014, 14:09 GMT

    go india go......

  • Dhanno on March 21, 2014, 14:07 GMT

Amit Mishra, any day a better bowler, shows you can take wickets in T20 by befuddling the batsman. And a team which goes into tests matches with4 bowlers has 5 for T20 ! Things never stop to amaze

  • on March 21, 2014, 13:59 GMT

    Go pakistan go

  • Ishfaqkhan.jk on March 21, 2014, 13:52 GMT

Go Ahead Team India! Destroy PUNJABI CRICKET BOARD(PCB) team. I am not hopeful for Pakistan. I already mentioned it before that I wont be surprised if Kamran Akmal and Shoaib Malik will back in the team. It will be a miracle if Pakistan will win.

  • on March 21, 2014, 13:44 GMT

Pakistan gonna lose today... but indwa will be kicked out of the tournament early and Pakistan will compete till the end.......

  • on March 21, 2014, 13:32 GMT

winning the toss is key. I expect kohli will contribute strongly again in batting and Dhoni will finish the job.

  • vkumar_086 on March 21, 2014, 13:29 GMT

Yes half job is done for India....Indian team just love chasing any total, whether it is ODI or it is in T-20...we should remember India is the only team to chase more than 350 runs thrice in ODI and more than 200 runs twice in T-20' its better to concentrate on our strengths rather than on weakness of opponents....good luck for INDIA....history repeats
