This is what makes a champion side and don't Pakistan know it. In 40 overs Australia re-taught their opponents the lessons of four days in Sydney from earlier this year, the moral of which remains that till the precise moment Australia are out, they are never out. Pakistan were on top for three days in Sydney, and 39 overs here, but Australia hunted away, gripped in, stuck at it. And with one ball to go, they pulled off an astonishing chase of 192 to enter Sunday's final, leaving on Pakistan the deepest kind of scars in an already abusive relationship. On this form, England needn't bother turning up.

Michael Hussey was the man in Sydney and he was the man here again, his captain Michael Clarke calling him, justifiably, a "freak," afterwards. Like Michael Bevan on speed, he pulled off an improbable heist, having come in at 105 for five in the 13th over, with too much needed and not enough wickets in hand. But as he crescendoed with 38 runs from the last ten remarkable balls of the game, he completed what must be - with little doubt - the finest innings of its kind in the short history of this short format; it is only hoped that Shane Warne was watching.

Australia were mostly out of it when he had walked in. Cameron White, as fearsome a T20 hitter as there can be, had been scaring Pakistan until then with some monstrous hits, but a regular fall of wickets lulled Pakistan into false hopes. Even the batsmen who had fallen earlier had done so while blazing away, a trait as Australian as Vegemite.

Five sixes in five overs from White had come from the 11th onwards, but Pakistan's spinners still kept a lid on things and when Saeed Ajmal bowled a five-run 14th, it seemed a crucial one. Australia still needed 70 from five and when White fell, it seemed over. But Hussey had already gotten his eye in, pulling Shahid Afridi for a pair of key sixes, and a mirage of momentum remained.

Match Meter

  • Pak
  • 9th over, Kamran steps it up: Watson is smashed for two fours and a six in an over that fetches 18, and the openers extend their partnership to 81.
  • Pak
  • 18th over, Umar sizzles: Johnson is launched for three sixes by Umar in a 24-run over in which he also brings up his fifty. Pakistan go on to post 191.
  • Pak
  • 1st and 3rd over, Aamer strikes: The two W's, Warner and Watson, are sent back cheaply, hurting Australia early in a big chase.
  • Pak
  • 8th and 9th over, Spinners tighten grip: Haddin and Clarke are stumped off Rehman and Afridi to put Australia deeper in trouble at 62 for 4.
  • Aus
  • 11th over, White begins counter-attack: Afridi is slog-swept for consecutive sixes. White adds three more to his tally before falling in the 17th over.
  • Pak
  • 17th and 18th over, Pakistan hit back: The wickets of White and Smith leave Australia needing 54 from 21 with just three wickets in hand.
  • Aus
  • 20th over, Ajmal stunned: Australia need 18, Johnson gets a single first ball. Michael Hussey on strike; 6, 6, 4, 6, game over.
Advantage Honours even

Thereafter he did Hussey things, running hard, placing the ball infuriatingly well so that when he prepared his final onslaught - 34 needed off two overs - it wasn't an outlandish task. Aamer was picked up on the leg-side for two boundaries, which sandwiched four hard-run doubles in between in the 19th. When he pulled the second ball of the last over for maximum, the force was fully with him. The next ball went down the ground, then a sliced cut trickled away, and aptly the finish came with the 14th six of the innings.

Until then, it had looked that for the second year running, Pakistan would fell the behemoth of the day in this tournament, with all the assurance of men who know the force is with them. Their run has been the subject of much sniggering but the one truth they have shown about global tournaments and this format is that it is all about timing and they almost got it right here.

Fear had played a huge role in their recent run against these opponents of 11 straight international defeats. It seemed to have been shed by their batsmen initially. Predictably, the Akmal brothers had much to do with it; the elder Kamran took responsibility at the top, before the younger Umar provided an almighty burst at the death.

Clarke, in overcast conditions, decided to bowl first after the start was delayed half an hour; Afridi would have done likewise but they had planned this smartly. His openers decided the best policy against such an attack was to simply bide their time, a plan loaded with as much risk as sense. But after two overs of nothing - as much time as you will get in this format - Akmal went first, choosing to play bad cop to Salman Butt's good.

Dirk Nannes was sliced and then driven down the ground to begin the fun. Butt joined in, taking on Shaun Tait with a brace of typically lush off-side shots and when Akmal ended the over with a pull, Pakistan were beginning to stamp it. For the first time in the tournament, Tait and Nannes had failed to strike in their opening bursts and Pakistan were well on the way to the best opening start against Australia by some distance.

Change came in the bowling, but not the batting. Steven Smith was slogged for 15, Akmal mistiming him straight down the ground for a maximum that brought up the fifty. Two overs later, as he bludgeoned 18 off Shane Watson, lofting, driving and cutting, he was bringing up his own fifty. Every now and again Butt would provide a gentle reminder of his presence, slicing and dicing a cute flick or cut here and there.

Very briefly momentum stalled as the openers went, but it was at this moment Umar decided to show the watching world once again the range of his talent. As sure of himself as a young rockstar, he went at Australia without fear. Intent had been announced with a slog-sweep off Smith and Nannes was then deposited in a similar area for a maximum, before being scooped over fine leg.

A glorious, brief peak came in Mitchell Johnson's 18th over, in which Umar, with all the arrogance of youth, pulled and slog-swept three sixes. A second consecutive fifty came in between the carnage. Even the generally meek Khalid Latif was bitten by this bug, a useful six-ball cameo ensuring that Pakistan pumped it to the end. Australia looked mostly shocked at such impudence, bowling wides, fumbling byes and overthrows.

When Hussey finished it less than two hours later, they were still shocked, only in a very different way.

I think pakistan played really well in the sami final and they were just not lucky enough to win it. Afridi is a new captain and will learn to deal with the pressure. He must continue to lead pakistan and we must provide our support. And guys don't forget"every dog has it's own day" and mike hussey was that dog.

Well played pakistan.I must say that Australians know only pakistan could give them that kind of scare.Saeed ajmal you are still a match have a long way to go and we know that you can win alot of games for guys played good cricket WELL DONE TEAM PAKISTAN.

Victory and defeat are part of the game. None of the team in the world has won all the matches or lost all of them. What matters is ?

Wheather competition was tough?. Did both teams gave their 100 percent? Did coaches prepared their game plan well? Did players played as a unit? Did captains acted according to their game palns?

Answer to first three is affirmative, however the last one is a moot question. Clarke was never able to stop Pakistanis slogging on all four side of wickets especially from Umar Akmal. His Plan B never worked. On the other hand Afridi fought well untill the eighteenth over, however his body actions revealed at this stage that match is slipping out of his hand, and even cameraman showed him nail bitting at this stage. Moreover he failed to bring his plan B , neither he was tipped from sidelines.Rather coach was holding his head with both hands. This is the difference between an experienced captain, and well trained professional coach.

Please I will request PCB to pay attention to this semifinal.Afridi is good cricketer but not good captain, U have watched final between ENG & AUS. Same Batsman and only can get 6 runs in last over.Very bad decision by afridi to bwl last over with spinner and against left hander.Razzak was best choice to bowl last over or they can go with Samee or asif inplace of Hafeez

england thump the ozzies and win the cup.Pakistan could have easily beaten the aussies if afridi had used his brain and given the last 2 overs to Razzaq and amir. The felding was poor as well giving2 runs rather than a single. This is exactly how they played in sydney in winter.they need to bring back younis and get rid of afridi he is no good captain. and to all the indians you are crap even though u have ipl.

Posted by   on (May 16, 2010, 19:40 GMT)

I think its a lesson for pakistani team whoever the captain in future .. never give last over to the spinner, how better he is ... because i remember saqlain mushtaq last over against india in pakistan which he conceded 10. Also a hint for coach, that plz dont watch the match just like the crowd, do analysis and send useful hints ... hussy was all playing leg side and yet bowling on leg side .. cant understand if bowlers are taking sixes n fours why u dont discuss and apply the plan B. No doubt that there are talent in pakistan, but we need better planning, their implementation and tracking .... Good Luck for The Future

Even the dump person knew Afridi's plan, to go with Ajmal. I think leader are the one who change their game plan according to the the situation. Though, Paksitan played fantastic game. Actually, loosing with grace is when the battle is like see saw and nail biting one, but till 38 over pakistan was winning no matter what... Abdul Razzaq should be given the last or the penulitmate over. Only that would give aussies surprise...but Saeed Ajmal will bowl the last over no matter what... Well played Australia....

Pak played some of their best cricket in months!!!!

But I guess the one tiny difference this year was that Umar Gul (The best T20 bowler) was missing and that made a massive difference.

Just imagine if he was bowling the last over!!!!

First of all i would like to appreciate the way Pakistan came out & batted without fear.. and then good start with the ball as well.. unlike others here i wanted a Pakistan win on that day.. but it was untill gutsy lads Cameron white & Mike Hussey came out & played an astonishing cricket.. whatever the situation is their target is clear.. go at full force & win it for their country.. no single moment of defensive play even they lost half of their side in 11 overs.. this is the way to play a do or die match & the aussies did it.. hats off aussies.. Hussey who carried towels & water bottles as a 12th man!! in IPL for super kings (could u belive it) proved that he is Mr.Cricket & a "freak" as clark mentioned in the post match presentation..

Pakisthan is only one team that can upset any team by producing sudden and unexpected mindbogling performance ...i was just wondering what if they do that in semi-finals but this time they produce superb performance but it was undone by power and class of hussey and also Cameron White who set the platform. Australia is a champion team and deserved that victory and also the worldcup...Best of Luck Aussie

Posted by Junaeds on (May 16, 2010, 3:16 GMT)

Waqar of all people should know the importance of a genuine fast bowler to operate at the death overs. Contrast Shaun Taits(or even Malingas) last over with Ajmals.

Posted by tawpatha on (May 16, 2010, 1:17 GMT)

Strategy error by Pakistan captain in both matches against Australia. Game#1 spinner bowling over#2 to Australia - that was a "give-away" over by Pakistan to Australia. Game#2 in semi-final he has final over thrown by a spinner - that was the cup-give-away over. Game#1 he has his #1 fast bowler bowl last over which ended up cleaning up Australia middle order & tail in a 5 wicket maiden over! First & last two overs of limited over games is bowled by fast bowlers - the fact that they had a coach who knows a thing or two about fast bowling (and lesson learnt about defensive field placement from Sydney test), is puzzling. Aggressive bowling & field placing was missing in Pakistan team in final 4 overs. The ball belonged to Razzaq & Aamer for over#19 & 20 respectively, and a 3-peat to the finals of the cup was achievable. A weak team over-achieving and exposing Aussies was a step in right direction, but lets get the job done next time, Mr. Afridi. PCB: unlock player bans to get cup back.

Posted by arshad817 on (May 15, 2010, 23:32 GMT)

I dont understand why Afridi used Abdul Razzak to bowl the last over? Is it due to lots of money involved in that match by bookies? I certainly beleive so.

Guyz, pak played very well and tryed their very best. I think it was a good desicion do give it to saeed ajmal, bcuz his economy rate was 7.00, and rzaq's economy rate was 11.00.Its ok, atleast pak fought well. It was a good game of cricket, and thats what matters. Its not only about winning or losing. I hope england beats australia in the final, so we get our sweet revenge.

Posted by cricdick on (May 15, 2010, 22:08 GMT)

M.Anas, pak.played well against Aus. No need to bring india here, but you can, dont care. But IPL was wonderful without Pakistan. It was so peaceful . Internation cricket does not need ball-eaters. If you think you 'rocksss" so keep on rocking but please add some sportsman spirit and praise Australlia who scored mored 40 runs in last 2 overs. That was a much bigger achievement. You losers lost another opportunity to bag a very favourable game, just like you couldnt get that one run against SL in last ball. Sorry, pls grow up.

Why must you torment us like this Australia.. why can't you just thrash us in a one sided match. WHY MUST IT COME THIS CLOSE?!

Posted by harikeshan on (May 15, 2010, 20:20 GMT)

@DrDeepakSitaramHiwal and Indian Fans who rant and rave about abuse and bullying when you lose. how about giving it back if you can. Harbhajan is disgrace cant perform outside India. Accept the fact that India is only No.01 for the simple fact that they have beaten a few low lying teams @ home & not beaten Aus or SA in series abroad. Rickey Pontings accepts defeat and Avg speaks for itself unlike Dhoni who gave such a lame excuse about the IPL parties taking a toll on the team. They should have thought about that b4 the WC and not been lured by the money and false hopes.Ausseis on the other hand dont go down without a fight....and ITS NOT ABOUT FANS IT ABOUT PLAYING FOR THE PRIDE AND HONOR OF YOUR COUNTRY. I guess India may start winning if they pick a team on merits rather past performances.

Pakistan played well.Pakistan had grip on match but aussie had the last laugh. We should that we are far better than india. IPL is nothing without pakistanis yah we rockzzz

Posted by friendlynaveed on (May 15, 2010, 18:34 GMT)

Pakistan played brilliant and deserved to win. Bad captaincy in the last 3 overs. Defensive field setting providing for doubles and singles keeping M.Hussey on strike and the score-board ticking. No pressure for getting the Aussies all out. Last over should have been bowled by A.Razzaq. All sixes were hit on spinners except for the first ball six of A.Razzaq. His experience was most as well. We made the same defensive tactic mistake in Australia in the second TEST. All in all, it isn't over until its over. When Ajmal came I felt Australians were gifted with a fabulous chance and hats off to Hussey for availing it. Afridi and team we love you and best of luck, we all make mistakes you know. Sincere effort is what we appreciate and saw in the match. I would have felt sorry for Australia and Hussey if they didn't win as they never gave up. Congratulations to both teams for making a great show and for Australia to qualify for the final.

Only Australia and England deserved to be final so it was a perfect result. Pakistan are very ordinary side with some very ordinary bits and pieces cricketers as it can be seen from their performance against australia this year. Even in earlier rounds of this tournament they looked really pathetic especially their bowling and batting. However nothing should be taken away from Ausies, they are simply the best. Rest of the teams should learn from Ausies, about how professional sport should be played. Well done Australia.

Australia have taken cricket ( in all its forms ) to a whole new level- they are undoubtedly the best side in the world and no one can match them on a consistent basis. That said, Pakistan have nothing to feel bad about. They played their hearts out ,but were simply outclassed in the end. This match has made me a fan of the T 20 format- never thought that would happen ! Long live cricket !!

Posted by svkh2881 on (May 15, 2010, 17:16 GMT)

first of all, all the very best to the aussies for the final match. @ DrDeepakSitaramHiwale - i think you are having some mental problem which most of the indian fans are having, to complain about australia, when indian teams play like a nut which they did in this world cup. On your comments on harbajan, he deserves that kind of treatment. Being an indian myself, i don't like to see him playing..such a disgraceful cricketer...he should have been banned for life...not just 3 matches...because the BCCI has money and power, it cannot justify the acts of some of the indian players during that tour..kudos to australia for a great win in the final...

This is what a champion team is made off. Almost every time there is a messiah for the team when they are stuck throat deep in troubles. This time it was Mike Hussey. Mr. Cricket has done it once again and has proved again he cannot be under estimated in this format of "big-hitters". All his 6 sixes were well timed. A flawless innings of 60 from 24 and a match winning partnership of 56 off just 16 under such pressure is once in many years chance to see. To be fair enough, Pakistan played out of its skin and posing a target of 192 against a team like Australia under such conditions is a milestone by itself. But poor captaincy and bowling changes are to blame. Its hard to believe that d results favorable for 39 overs gets changed in just 1 over... From the bottom of my heart, I can say that T20 World Cup 2010 has got its 2 most deserving finalists...Hoping for a tremendous match.

Posted by   on (May 15, 2010, 15:59 GMT)

The minute Saeed Ajmal came on to bowl the last over, I knew that Australia was in with a chance. Shahid Afridi made a boo boo of sorts, here. The man who should have been bowled the last over should have been none else than Abdul Razzak, who had gone for 22 in his 2 over spell, before this. But then again, he is the most experienced and bowls his yorkers at the death, with precision. He was my man. But destiny had other ideas, and now Pakistan are out of the running. Afridi had a poor world cup by his standards, but as a captain he came out well.

Posted by   on (May 15, 2010, 15:56 GMT)

Pakistanis went down like a man. They played cricket the way it should be played. But the day was not theirs.Well done Mr. Cricket. Teams like Pakistan and Australia make an ICC event eventful. This is why cricket is not cricket without Pakistan.

It was really heartbreaking to see Pakistan loose, I was always hoping for a reprise of 1992 WC final once India was out of the tournament. But hatsoff to Hussey, He was calm under pressure and he was arrongantly confident. Saeed Ajmal is one of the best bowlers of the tournament, i hope Pak does not drop him from future events. Afridi should have done something different. But Paksitan, keep it up. Love from India!!!

Posted by hanaz on (May 15, 2010, 14:11 GMT)

Well played TEAM PAKISTAN but there were flaws in captainacy n also team selection. No team can win with out genuine fast bowlers. I have a question to ask when you had a great bowler in the shape of Mohammad Sami in the side why you didn't included in the side? He bowled tremendously in all matches he played if he would have been included we had definitely won the match.

Posted by   on (May 15, 2010, 13:43 GMT)

This was the best game of the entire tournament, Pak played exceptionally well. Aus showed why they are the most dangerous team in all 3 formats. Hussey is an exceptional player, wow. He really deserves the nick name Mr Cricket. The two best teams in the final, Eng and Aus but its hard to see even the final tomorrow being as good as this semi final match.

LOVE you Pakistan, Love you Australia. I think this was the best game so far in the T20 World Cup , before this one the game b/w Newzealand and Pakistan was the best (if someone has any other suggestions). I watched the whole match and I just want to say one thing to Afridi,'Thats the way a PAKISTANI TEAM should play" winning and losing is the parts of the game. But losing like in AUstralia last year was 'disgusting' and embarrassing ,specially for the Pakistanis Living abroad, But last night LOSS really gave us a big pride, ALthoughwe lost, I watched the match in a club last night with house full of Ausies and for 39 overs we rocked. Even after the 40th overs the Ausies spectators litterally said,'Pakistan deserved the win' and i felt proud! THATS the WAY a ha a ha i LIKE iT ,,,,I hope we lose all games in the future LIKE least fight ws shown!!!

pakistanis were made to eat st. Lucian dust yesterday by White & Hussey, Australian's truely showed they're far ahead of the other cricket playing nations. No Doubt Pakistani's dominated till Cameron White hit the first Six... But later Watta beating they have given to Pakistan it's unthinkable. it's literally like Aussies kicked them out of competition stamping authority that u cant beat us under any circumstances. Pakistan vs. Australia 0 vs 5 in last five T20's . Aussie simpy Rulz Cricket...

Posted by SLIPOFTONGUE on (May 15, 2010, 13:27 GMT)

In such matches there is no loser. Only Cricket won. One of the best T20 match played todate. Wonderful performances from the Akmal brothers but overshadowed in presence of the "inhumanly" act of Mike Hussey. You can keep your head high in such defeats, Pakistan.

Posted by mew_mew_cat on (May 15, 2010, 13:24 GMT)

The reason why Australia keeps playing well in tight circumstances is that they have players who can keep their cool, organize the game under pressure and never give up. This 'Australianism' has been in the side for generations, and Aussies are the only side which owns it. Just imagine pressure situation players starting with Steve Waugh and then Ian healy, Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath, Michael Bevan, Mike Hussey...who dont need to be in good form to play well, all they need is challenging times where their best comes out. I am so happy that Australia won; the best team going to the finals against perhaps the second best team in the compeitition (England). Pakistan played very well but in the end justice has been served with all over-rated non-performing Asian teams being eliminated. Cricket has won, it doesnt matter a bit how us Asian fans feel about it.

hussey u bacame my fevorite what a display

Posted by shazaibgujjar on (May 15, 2010, 13:08 GMT)

Dont worry brothers, inshallah next tyme! But only thing which bothers me is that afridi knew that spinners are being beaten so much by white and hussey then why did they gave so many chances to saeed ajmal and afridi himself.. but amir was the one who wasn't beaten at all. I think last over should have been given to a fast bowler like amir but he had already delivered 19th over so it could be given to abdur razaq instead of saeed whose ball hussey loved to smash! Hussey got the key to smash these dud spinners at all, so afridi should have change the tactic right when cameroon started smashing sixes. Do you agree with me or not?

Posted by RoshanF on (May 15, 2010, 13:08 GMT)

Yeah, Hussey was superb BUT he was sure lucky in that Shahid Afridi erred badly in getting his last 04 overs wrong. The last over should never have been left to a spinner and neither Shane Warne nor Murali could have done much on it either considering that it wasn't turning much and the fact that on the last over batsmen have no fear and they would just swing the bat at anything. A slow bowler on that pitch was easy meat for a well set Hussey. Had Afridi bowled Razzak in the 19th and given Aamer the 20th Pakistan would have made it. Razzak with his experience could have bowled yorkers and Aamer would have been difficult to hammer. Pakistan should have won it,

Was this the greatest T20 match yet played? It's certainly the best T20I I can remember.

Posted by _NEUTRAL_Fan_ on (May 15, 2010, 12:58 GMT)

@Mitcher. lol...nope. I am not "Neutral" in that I don't support a particular team or wish for another team to lose. We all have nations of our own, teams we are tired of seeing win, players we rate and players we don't. I am neutral in the sense that I have no problem in accepting or giving criticism or praise of ANY team or ANY player with minimum bias. So yes I am tired of seeing Aus win all the time but I will be the 1st to admit that they DESERVE to win all the time. I love good cricket above anything else.

Posted by cricketfanaticindubai on (May 15, 2010, 12:56 GMT)

The best match of 2010 T20 WC followed by the Pak-NZ match that went to the last ball and Pakistan ended up on the losing side. Not often does a team dominate for 39 overs on a trot and lose, but when you atre up against Aus, anything can happen. Reminds one of the recent Pak-Aus Test match in Sydney where again Mike Hussey turned the tide.

Non-performers like Misbah and Hafeez cost Pak throughout the tournament.

My bet is Aus will steamroll England in the final just becuase they pack too much fireppower. Bits and pieces players like Wright, Bresnan and yardy will come a cropper against Aus.

Posted by mzaka on (May 15, 2010, 12:26 GMT)

I think Aussies deserve to win as they have special people for special jobs... Look at Mike Hussey how many teams have such specialists who keep the scoreboard ticking with 1s and 2s and when needed hit big hits out of boundary...

Its time that Cricket should be well planned if the subcontinent teams like India and Pak want to stop Australia... Instead of making Home Pitches which suit our batsmen, where they score double and triple century accolades and which offer spin to our bowlers professional Cricket should be taught...

Otherwsie things will not improve and perhaps we will stop sending our players for abroad tournaments

Posted by   on (May 15, 2010, 12:16 GMT)

Good Game. The IPL cant give you this type of matches and frankly speaking the final would seem a dud after this. Pakistan played well considering how everyone , the critics and the fans , was sure that Aus would steamroll Pak in a one sided match.

Posted by   on (May 15, 2010, 12:10 GMT)

There was lot of talks about Michael Hussey's form last year but he showed what a class act he is. Only he could have done that. He has always performed well in crucnh situations and he again showed that on Friday. It's his ability to perform under pressure which stands out. With age this Australian seems to be getting better..

Posted by CiMP on (May 15, 2010, 11:49 GMT)

What needs to be added is Pakistan had done an outstanding job considering the turmoil in Pak cricket in the recent months. They played out of their skin, even conceding there was some unimaginative bowling by the Australians. On any other day, against any other team they wd perhaps have won the contest hands down. Enter one Michael Edward Killeen H.....! The not infrequently used phrase 'defeated but not disgraced' applied to Pak today completely.

pakistan were the only asian hope left to raise the cup and take it to asia :(. pakistan played amazingly well with every bit opposing them at the start including the weather and ausies better run rate and win rate. whole nation is sad as the cup is not ours any more. :(

This was one of the best matches so far in T20. Sadly, there had to be a loser and it was Pakistan's bad luck that it had to be them. What Pak did was to really give a hard time to the ozzies. But for the brilliance of Mike 'freakish' Hussey, it wd have been Pakistan that wd have got to the final. Pakistan was outstanding in both the innings but when a man seizes the moment to self-actualize as Mike Hussey did, everything else has to just defer to that moment of destiny.

Congratulations Pakistan on your wonderful display and further congratulations to the Pakistan fans for your grace in losing and your appreciation of a great game regardless of the result. You know this game might be what's needed to appease the gods and stop the incredible bad luck (and sometimes self destruction) that you cricket. Cricket without a competitive Pakistan is boring! Love from Oz.

Awesome display by Hussey again, he and White take the game from us, Pakistan not learning from the past after 4 gone they just relax, poor captaincy by Afridi after 191 on the scoreboard and 4 early wickets he is responsible for not taken right decisions. Anyway great game by both teams.

Well played Pakistan, really appreciate it but Micheal Hussey was outstanding, kudos to him!!!

HUSSEY u great........but i wont say u r no.1 batsmen...bcs u struggled in yoker balls....u played 6 only easy balls........pakistan bowled very worst......if they bowled more yorkers,surely they could win.......AUSSIE ROCKSSSSSSSSSSSSS!

I don't know, this pain will cost me how many sleepless night! I think Pakistani players are psychologically week. They lack the junoon for winning. Whenever the white men are up against Pakistan they have only one motto : We must defeat Pakistan.

Posted by Plague on (May 15, 2010, 11:06 GMT)

A lot of people are complaining about Afridi's decision to use a spinner for the last over. They are not realizing that the pitch didn't do much for pace bowlers who were very effective in other games (like Nannes). The spinners had a good turn in the pitch and Hussey was supposed to be weak against spinners than pace attack. So strategically it is a good decision to use a spinner. However, Hussey was in the mood to hit and everything connected.

I am an Aussie fan. I am proud to be a fan and it was an amazing cricket game. Australia struggled a bit in the game with over throws and Haddin's misses. And they were under pressure for big hits with the way they swung and missed. But in the end, Hussey took the game away.

Both teams played well and Australia came out as the winners.

I want them to win the finals but even if they lose, this semi final game is recognition enough. Well played by a team classified at 9th.

There were three brilliant performances we have seen in this game, and two of them were outstanding. Kamran Akmal played brilliantly at the start of the innings and Umar Akmal's performance was outstanding to say the least. To play such an inning at such a young age and at such a big occasion like the semifinal of a big event like World cup speaks volumes about the ability and talent of the prodigious Umar Akmal that he is. I think we are watching the best batsman since Vivian Richards, and someone who is as good as a certain Brian Lara. Michael Hussey's innings showed the mental toughness and their approach of the game. South Africa can take a leaf or two out of Michael Hussey's innings and can do better in the future events. Umar Akmal is certainly going to be the best batsman that Pakistan has produced with no undue disrespect to the likes of Zaheer and Javeed whose fighting qualities can be matched only a handful in the history and in Umar we are seeing the best after Vivian.

It was crunch game again Pakistan lost in final over. Still cant believe it but Michael Hussey done it for Auses and lead the team to a victory it was Best performance of of 20-20 world cup 2010 by Hussey . bad luck for team Pakistan we lost by better side but it was really a hell of match turning with every over Well Played Pakistan team they fight till end but it wasn't there day Congrats to Auses Fans and team they deserved this victory

What a game.It was simply brilliant from the first ball. Thanks for both teams for their performances and my thoughts are with the Pakistan team as they deserve a victory for their die hard performance. However as ususal, Aussies have stunned the owrld and congradulations for that next to impossible display of cricket. It's the Aussie skill and stamina and they raise well above any other team.Pakistan should'nt feel bad as they have done very well and if they happened to get hussey's wicket before the last over would have all being praising them now. This is the sheefr nature of shorter dformat of the game.Wonderful game of cricket and must say I was privileged to watch it live.

still i cant believe that Pakistan is out from final.........but i really appreciate our team they played extra ordinary well........ Pakistan team make us Proud.... although the result is with the other end but our team gave Australians very hard time in semi final

that was an unbelievable return of Australians. Pakistani players are still weak in bowling and fielding and Afridi does not deserve for captain ship.

Congrats to Aussies and well played Pakistan.

But this was the first time Aussies were tested, How many times have you seen Aussies biting their nails, giving over throws, giving wides e.t.c. It was purely due to Pakistan's outstanding performance. Well Played Pakistan.

PAKISTAN ZINDABAD... Proud 2 b pakistani... and Hussey PLayed the inning of life time...

taking nothing away from Hussy- simply briliant; the last over shud have gone to Razzaq, he has the temperament. looking at the runs conceeded in the last 3 overs, it is obvious that Pakistan were lulled into thinking they had the game...

Posted by banka on (May 15, 2010, 9:58 GMT)

Hats off to Hussey and the his australian mates for the way they played. Hats off to Pakistanis to play their best cricket. We got one of the finest match of T20 world cup. What a match. Ajmal bowled really well in the match. Only in the last over, I believe, tension got him. He bowled to Hussey on leg stump line and understandbly thats the area of Hussey for him to hit. After the first ball, Afridi needed to come to him and have word with him. To get some time in-between the delivery to un-nerve Hussey. A dot ball in the over would have tilted the balance towards Pakistan then. Easily said though, it is really difficult to think during tense time and very very short time. Let us put it this way-both team played real good cricket and Austalia won the match. This match also reminds me the first T20 final between India and Pakistan which was also equally interesting. And Hussey-you are my man mate Varun

Posted by SyedArbabAhmed on (May 15, 2010, 9:50 GMT)

Hussey made us lost a test match as well, he was playing all his shots on the leg side except 1 boundary, and pakistanis were bowling him from over the wicket hence ball was coming to him and he was easily playing on the leg side. Alas!!!

The key words in this article: England needn't bother to show up tomorrow. Spare yourself the disgrace, lads.

Posted by   on (May 15, 2010, 9:44 GMT)

This is just bad luck for Pakistan, who played so well till the last over and force Australian players to bite their nails, but still just bad luck.

Posted by   on (May 15, 2010, 9:42 GMT)

Hussey did it for Australia. In fact we were short of good fast bowlers which cost us semifinal. Waqar Younus knows how important fast bowlers are. I hope we will soon see fast bowling department getting stronger underthe coaching of Waqar Younus. Well played Pakistan team!!! Good luck for coming events.

great game, nice comments allfarone. hold your heads high Pakistan, remarkable game, it was Hussey Mr Cricket in the end who did wonders.. really salute him. At least we accepted defeat in graciousness, the game matters. India thinking they are the best, exposed brutally outside their country, need to recall Tens, Dravid and co... Simply cant bat......... the perils of IPL, playing on flat subcontinent wickets, thats not cricket...its not a coincidence to lose all 3 matches and that too second time in a row, says a lot of things about Indian cricket..Where was Uthappa, Ishant Sharma... Pathetic display and also by Windies.. Sri Lanka played really well. I think the best 2 teams are in the final, they deserved it and Australia should win but it would be a nice contest hopefully!

Posted by letchford on (May 15, 2010, 9:15 GMT)

Unbelievable game!!! Pakistan had Australia's measure for probably 30 of the 40 overs. As for Zippydingdong quoteing John Buchanan, you just lost all credability! As Waqar said you do your best & if the opposition still win then the kudos is to them..

despite being a a indian i always support pakistan when they play against australia. But yesterday Australia showed their mettle and their mental strength and how to snatch match from opposition's hand. I strongly believe it would be impossible for any team to win from this situation. In my opinion indian and pakis should work on their temperament.Becoz if aussies were on the score of 191 in the first innings they would had easily beaten the pakis with a huge margin in a crunch semifinal match

I am fortunate to hv witnessed one of the greatest knocks in limited overs cricket. This knock from Hussey ranks amongst the best of all times. If one wants to see performance & commitment at its best, this is it. The so-called great Indian Cricketers must learn from Mike how cricket should be played. It is a pity that this magnificently gifted cricketer is paid peanuts, while the so-called super stars of Indian cricket are showered with millions of dollars for doing nothing for their country.

Posted by allforone on (May 15, 2010, 8:43 GMT)

To Pakistan and supporters - those who accepted defeat so gracefully, you are admired. We Aussies know what it's like to lose in such a situation (South Africa chasing 430+ in a one day game). There is a decidedly different tune to you guys and the Indians who criticize within their team, and who point fingers at their countrymen when there is a loss. Pakistan hold your heads high, this was a miracle.

Posted by   on (May 15, 2010, 8:37 GMT)

My god, some people are idiots. Where was the sign that Pakistan didn't do everything it could to win? The nerve of some people to consider the Pakistanis threw the game is an insult to their players, and also to the Aussies for denying them a great win. What I saw was a great game between two sides going hammer and tong. Pakistan certainly didn't play like a side that has lost 10 matches in a row against Australia. They didn't deserve to lose, but the innings from Hussey was a ripper that deserved a win. And to leifedling: you're a deadset idiot. What arrogance does Australia have that India doesn't? India have become a replica of Australia in mannerism and boorishness, but only apply less skill and discipline to actually achieve results. Or am I being too extreme here?

Anyway, this isn't about India (a message I would like to convey to many of their fans: not everything is about you). It's about Australia and Pakistan now. On Sunday, it'll be Australia and England.

Posted by JAJISARMA on (May 15, 2010, 8:24 GMT)

It is a Gem of a Match. It is cricket(er) who has won. Poor Afridi he not only failed to click but also failed Pakis. No wonder, Wakquer is motionless, of the heriocs of the Cricketer. Kudos to Aussies! Best of Luck for the finals on Sunday.

I missed the game but it sounds like it was a blinder! Unfortunate for the Pakistan team but at least they can go out with their heads held high. Roll on the final! Should be a good match but if I'm honest I don't see much hope for an England win, even though they're in good shape too.

Posted by   on (May 15, 2010, 8:10 GMT)

Fantastic display by both teams. Pakistan were hungry for the victory, but Australia were just a touch hungrier. Congrats to Australia for winning, and congrats to Pakistan for making it hard for them...

Posted by zippydingdong on (May 15, 2010, 8:09 GMT)

Amazing game,Aussie spirit is just outstanding in any sport. They just dont give up,as Geoffrey Boycott says Australians are a country of do'ers, they walk the walk, its bred into them from day one, something cricket teams like India need to look at.Well done to Pakistan for an amazing fight but really no one deserved more to be in the final than Australia after their dominance of this tournament. One thing that has stood out though is the one thing the Aussies need to change,Michael Clarke as player and captain he bats for himself and his captaining is very basic and standard.Former coach of Australia John Buchanon said Clarke should never captain Australia,Ive been seeing why for the past year or two now.Hussey,White etc would make great captains at this level.Great game bring on the final,it will be very interesting.

Despite being a die-hard Indian fan, I support Pakistan wholeheartedly in any game against Australia. The haughty Aussie attitude is what I utterly dislike and it broke my heart watching today's game. Consolations to Pakistan: I dare say they played better and lost. Such is the fickle nature of T20.

Posted by   on (May 15, 2010, 8:01 GMT)

Michel Hussey has indeed flabbergasted Pakistanis and Waquar's statement that he can't still believe it is a testimony to it. Neither can Saeed Ajmal who might had other ideas for the night after he conceded only 5 runs to the dangerous White in the 14th over. But although Mike hussey weighs lighter on his feet he has ...done damage that is of the cosmic proportion to the Pakistnanis. They are out of it and rightly so because the best teams deserve the berth in the final and Australia clearly better of the two opponents although not on the day the other night until that last two overs when Mike Hussey pulled it off from nowhere. Under the circumstances the most demanding ask of the last few minutes was to have a good mental poise and self-confidence. You don't often associate power with Hussey but yesterday he has shown he can be more dangerous than the ominous looking other players with some brilliant thought process and temparament.

Posted by ShAh00 on (May 15, 2010, 7:58 GMT)

Well Played PAKSITAN... But, I personally feel whatever happened, its right, its called JUSTICE FROM FATE...... Aussies deserved to be in the Final, so the Fortune tilted in their Favour. HATs OFF to PAKISTAN, being a PAKSITANI, I am Proud of My Team, we played Well, Gave Our best, whatever it needs to win a match, BUT we were beaten by the BEST in the TOURNAMENT, not Just BETTER. Two Un-Beaten Teams in the Final, although, Like PAKISTAN, ENGLAND has also Lost One UnFortunate Game scoring Same 191, but mainly because of Mr. Duckworth & Mr. Lewis's Calculation rahter than brrilaince of GAYLE or POLLARD. Looking Forward to a Good, Tight, Thrilling, Cricket Rich FINAL.

Pakistan didn't play well in this tournament. They managed to scrape through to semi-finals with just one win each league stage. While Hussey played wonderfully well, it was not against an opponent at their best form or momemtum. The bowling in the last over by Pakistan was total crap. We can appreciate Aussie spirit and Hussey's innings, but lets not go over the top and say that this is the best ever and things like that.

Well, First of all congratulations for the aussies for the biorliant match. Fantastic game of cricket. Only last two overs actually taking the game away from pakistan for that semi. It was a big question mark for the Ajmal's last over. BNot only afridi, ajmal, waqar younus but also the aussies, manager of aussie and all the lover of cricket in the whole world knows that ajmal will be delived the last over. and that was the game plan of Aussies team tooo. they w8 and then they send their two lefty in the right time. Its not Pakistan defeat its cricket who alwaz win

Posted by Khushter on (May 15, 2010, 7:30 GMT)

I think Pakistan did well in all departments but the planning was missing Afridi was just following the script which he wrote before the game, this has happend in the whole tournament, there is some serious planning issue Afridi is good choice as a captain but he needs to understand that the things don't normally go according to the script you need to be flexible and adaptable. Plus our selectors need to rethink the strategies now we seriously need a very sharp minded selector who can device such strategies that can really make our team the best as we need to ask about these "SUPER STARS", when ever a strong teams comes they fails and against the weaker teams in favorable condition they score heavily and take wickets. If we want to become the best we need to OVER HAUL the system

Posted by   on (May 15, 2010, 7:24 GMT)

I think more than anyone else Saeed Ajmal stunned Pakistan. Few days ago he caused Pakistan defeat against New Zealand by dropping 3 catches & now in this semi final he couldn't defend 18 runs in last over. He was not even a shadow of a bowler he is in that last over. I think PCB should hold inquiry against Ajmal as many fans doubt he may be involved in match fixing.

Posted by   on (May 15, 2010, 7:18 GMT)

Cop that! Don't normally get into 20/20 bash/crash but what a game. Was consequently pretty bleary-eyed for auskick coaching this morning. Don't mind the pakis, they have much more talent than the arrogant-for-nothing, self-interested & (overseas-born) pommie gits. Bring it .....

last over of the 2nd semi-finals ...tat is 20th over, Ajmal stunned: Australia need 18, Johnson gets a single in the first ball. Michael Hussey on strike; 6, 6, 4, 6, game over.itzz all over..Michael Hussey stuns Pakistan..tat's!!!!!!!!!Michael Hussey pulled off a sensational run-chase to send Australia into the final ...

Posted by ultimatewarrior on (May 15, 2010, 7:13 GMT)

This great inning of 60 from 24 balls in a run chase in a semi final match of an ICC event by Mr. Cricket reminds me of Inzy in his early years batted in 1992 ICC World cup semifinal run chase against NZ, who scored coincidentally 60 runs in 36 balls in same pressure situation. This sort of innings comes in decades......long live Michael Hussey for showing never say die attitude

Posted by NasimAhmad69 on (May 15, 2010, 7:10 GMT)

Australia didn't win - Pakistan simply threw the match away! Shahid Afridi made a huge mistake giving the last over to a spinner. Should have been Abdul Razzaq no doubt. Very sad. But that's how it goes and you have to give Aus credit for their positive mental attitude and not giving up. Only Australia can pull a win like this. But very sad that Pakistan, who put Aus on the back foot first time in this tournament couldn't pull it off. It was their game for the taking.

Posted by Christy1268 on (May 15, 2010, 7:07 GMT)

Pak in most tournaments start badly, get a divine help or 2 to qualify for the knockout stage, peak at right time and go on to win the tournament. I thought that this was going the same way -only this time Hussey got the divine help ! But wot a match and what a contest from 2 good, talented and committed teams. There is a general fear now, that good old England cud be swept away by an Aussie storm and we will c a damp squib of a final !!

Pakistan lost the match from a winning position. Hussey played a great knock but the Pakistan bowlers could have done better. Giving Aamer the last over would have been so much better

I am sick and tired of all the haters (not surprisingly many indians among them), who are saying that Pakistan didn´t deserve t be in the Semi´s. Yes, Pakistan did not play good cricket over all, but were good in patches, good enough to give Australia a headache, (how Australia responded to that, is a different story). Every team in super 8´s had equal chances, Do not tell me that, India, New Zealand, West Indies or South Africa deserved more to be in the Semi´s. Rubbish. Bottom line is that Pakistan went to semi´s again. (Mind you, they are the ONLY team to reach ALL ICC events since 2007 World Cup), which in itself is bit of an achievment, giving the turmoil situation of Pakistan Cricket in recent past. Now that said, Australia and England (not surprisingly) were the most consistent teams of the T20, and surely they deserve a final between them, becuase of the manners in which both teams have played. As a Pakistan fan, im glad that they gave their 100%. thats enough for me.

Great Great Aussies, Plucked victory from the jaws of defeat. The final should be an interesting one between the traditional Ashes rivals.Well Pakistan, the wicket in St.Lucia is not as menacing like the one in Bridgetown.Pakistan defeated but not disgraced.Great show by Akmal siblings.Kamran you are dare-devil, but please stop your barking behind the stumps. It is terrible like the grunting of Monica Seles and Maria Sharapova. What a fine player this young Ummer Akmal is.Let us not mind the green gaudy cream on his lips.Kudos to Pakistan bereft of stars the young guns fought well.An Australian win in the final is fully justified, though so far England has done exceptionally well. Finally Vaquar Yonus you are graceful in defeat.Even when your team had the upper-hand, you were so calm and composed. You and your supporting staff did a splendid job.I am an Indian, our cricketers can learn a few things from you particularly the commitment and the pride in playing for the country

And great performance by Pakistan too! The Akmal brothers were magnificent, Amir was terrific, and Ajmal was superb too...until he ran into Mike Hussey! But absolutely no shame in losing to such a magnificent effort by a champion side. Will definitely go down as one of the all-time classic T20 matches.

A great game cricket we witnessed last day.It was an awesome display of powerful cricket and unpredictability that Pakistan team can bring in to this gentleman's game.Starting from the batting the base that was established by K.Akmal and Butt and then the delightful strokes of U.Akmal. The bowling also started exceptionally well with Ameer striking in the very first over and doing the same after a few overs.holding the Aussies down to 64 runs at the end of 9th over showed how determined the players were to make it to the third final in a row. After a long time i could see a fearless Pakistan which was missing from them for the last couple of years. But then again M.Hussey again showed the requirement of mental and physical toughness at this level of game where we all expected that the Aussie hunt for the T20s has gone with the wind. Hats Off to Afridi and his men for a wonderful performance.I hope PCB this time atleast will not setup an enquiry commission.

Spin bowling at the detah = fail every time - but brilliant game and wel done Pak for standing up when it counted and pushing the aussies almost all the way. Pak deserved better but wasnt to be when that great aussie battler again gets his team over the line!

going to be a great final too!

Stunning ... Absolutely stunning ... 60+/4 chasing 190+ with the asking rate already rocketed to 11+ per over, most players would have given up chasing, but not Cameron White & Michael Hussey. The way they batted under heavy pressure in a semi-final knowing that if they make even a single mistake it would be the end of road for Australia in this WC 20-20 after all the consistency in the previous games, is nothing but extraordinary. Absolutely incredible the way Hussey managed 50+ runs in mere 20 balls with only 3 wickets in hand & only 2 tailenders to come. 18 runs required in the final over & he managed it inside 5 delivering with the help of 3 sixes, boy! can you expect a more incredible single-handed finish in such a high-pressure situation ?

Posted by Quazar on (May 15, 2010, 6:14 GMT)

All hail Mr. Cricket!!! Absolutely stunning performance! Cameron White was great too. But Hussey was awesome in the last two overs...the running, the! And the quality I admire most in Aussie players like Hussey, Lee, White and Warner is that they not only are 110% cricketers, but they let their cricket do all the talking. So great to see a nice guy finish tops!

Looks like Pakistan can't beat Australia...No matter what...but a match you can watch many times on replay...Great innings by Akmal Bros...bowler let them down...they couldn't bowl yorkers in the last overs and tactically got it wrong giving away too much of a strike to Huss...but what a freakish innings...Aussies just keep coming back

Posted by   on (May 15, 2010, 6:02 GMT)

Every thing was in control of PAKI except they missed the pace in shape of M.Asif, If he was there with Amir; results will be different.

As an Indian cricket-lover, Pakistan was just unlucky to run into the Aussie Juggernaut. While the loss to the Kangaroos may seem a lot, me thinks Pakistan only came second because only one team coukd come first. And on this day, NOTHING could stop the Kangroos. If I was a Pakistani, I would not loose heart but take heart about the run Kangaroos were given! Kaafi dildaar khel hua!

Posted by   on (May 15, 2010, 5:57 GMT)

Look at this - set a huge 192 to win, Australia has done it against Pakistan. We Indians just need to keep the same mentality going into a bg geme.

Great Match. Disappointment in the end. The Final 3 overs. You have to get it right till the end to the Aussies. Stats: All sixes were scored off spinners except the first ball six off A.Razzaq Should have given the final 2 overs to fast bowlers only. Attacking was required. Scoring 2's of Aamer was made easy by defensive field, should have tried to attack and take wickets, not just containment only. Aamer took 3 wickets and no sixes. A fast bowler could have replaced M.Hafeez ( See statistics of Hafeez, Asif & Sami for this tournament on Cricinfo) Great effort by all Pakistanis, they worked hard till the end. Aussies never give up, Do they? Afridi & men, we love you and hope you pick trophies in future.

Posted by meem.alif.suad on (May 15, 2010, 5:45 GMT)

hmmm , Well Played Hussey a brave innings , responsible innings, calculated hits, reading the bowlers mind, finding the gaps, running hard. Salutes !!!

Afridi : after two sixes in his last over 16th over of the match , he gave over to aamir so the last over remained for ajmal if 17th over would have been given to ajmal so amir would have bowled the last over and aamir bowled a 5 wicket maiden earlier in this tournament against australia. According to me that was Afridis bad decision and it cost us a match, semi-final, a cup :( , the fielding of Pakistan was not up to the mark too , Aussises took many doubles and our fielders were unable to pick the ball neatly and if picked delayed in thrwoing towards pitch.

Pakistan is rightly out of the tournament , better side Aus progressed.

Hope to see a Good Final

Best Match and equal to a semifinal . This shows the people who have called Mike Hussey a score ticker and said that Hussey does nothing but take singles and twos and occasionally fours . Well this innings proves them wrong !!!

Posted by   on (May 15, 2010, 5:42 GMT)

70 runs off last 5 overs. I was nearly late for golf! You gotta hand it to the Aussies; they know how to win.

Posted by rambadi on (May 15, 2010, 5:42 GMT)

You can't help being impressed by the way Australians play cricket...or should I say sports in general. The Aussies were never my favorite although a lot of my favorite players come from that team. In fact, with a few exceptions, I used to route for anyone who played against the Aussies.

I had given up on that kind of ideology a long while ago now. These guys are just too damn good and are dominant for a good reason. They take sports seriously, they are very physically fit, and have what it takes to finish off the opponent. Not to mention their cricket board which is merciless towards slackers.

England is my favorite in the finals (it is my favorite team). And other than having one favorite, I am a neutral. I am able to enjoy the game more that way. But, I won't be disappointed if Aussies win. It is not easy to beat the best team in cricket. It is high time other teams recognize that the Aussies are still the best in cricket. Not doing so will only lead to their peril.

Posted by atul2470 on (May 15, 2010, 5:40 GMT)

what a match. the best international match ever seen .what a performance by the champion team under pressure!! it would be unfair to aussies if they had to be on losing side coz they fully deserved to be winner , the way they played their cricket in this tournament . i think all the teams has to take lesson from the performance and should have the believe that the match is not lost/won till the last ball is bowled. pakistan as always a surprise package gave their best performance on field today. but aussies were superlative at the end. cricket at its best. but it was really a sorry show by the empty stands in the semifinals.

one of the best game of cricket i have ever witnessed,,,,and surely ONLY AN AUSTRALIAN SIDE CAN PULL IT.....the great OLD WARLORD MIKE HUSSEY YOU CHAMPION much one can expect from this human race.....GOD MUST HAVE GONE CRAZY if he SAW THIS GAME OF cricket...... THE GAME IS ON... AGAIN

Posted by   on (May 15, 2010, 5:29 GMT)

For all those who critisize Pakistan, this is for you. You saw the 11 guys, UNITED, gave there heart out to win. Ofcourse the better team won, but no area Pakistan lack talent, persistence, or just gave up. HATS OFF TO YOU GUYS, you guys made us proud to be Pakistani. AFRIDI: Don't worry about if a different bowler might have been better in last over. Ajmal was the right choice and he did his best. NO ONE AND I MEAN NO ONE has given a scare like this to Australia in the entire tournament like you guys did. Keep it going.

Posted by raza14 on (May 15, 2010, 5:26 GMT)

PakTeam definitely managed to avoid humiliation, and that's what we needed to do 1st of all. And we have to accept that preparation for exam in last couple of days can evacuate you from D Grade slot but can't get 1st position for you.

Posted by amlankj on (May 15, 2010, 5:24 GMT)

Well guys, what do you think? Bowling Ajmal in the last over with 2 left handed batsmen on the crease was justified? While watching I thought Ajmal would either get them out or get hit for sixes (for the flight he gives in his deliveries) and much to Pakistan's undeserving pain the latter happened. I was thinking that a Razzak or even an Afridi would have been safer. I'm taking nothing away from Mike Hussey but I do not approve of picking Ajmal in the last over.

Great ,crucial, miraculous Innings of Mike Hussey which will be remembered in the years to come. Autralia is one team which will always thrive under pressure and come out victorious and this is what make them favourites of the game of cricket

But i m still proud to be a pakistani and the way they played...Everyone will agree that pakistan was the one side that looked like beating Aussies..i m sure they will crush england in the fnal.

Posted by InTheDeep on (May 15, 2010, 5:19 GMT)

Full credit to Pakistan for overcoming their fear of the Aussies and playing their natural attacking game. There was some great bowling and batting from this Pakistan side which, under normal conditions, would have seen them through against any side in the competition. But then along came Mike Hussey. After being criticized in the Aussie press and taking quite a bit of stick over the last 18 months, Hussey has shown his critics just how good he really is. We Aussies have been in serious trouble three times in this tournament due to batting collapses of our top order. And each and every time it's been Mike Hussey who's come in at No 7 or 8 and done the necessary hard work, staging a comeback and giving us the momentum to get across the line. We Aussies have got a lot to thank Mike Hussey for. And on top of that he's a damn nice bloke. THANK YOU, HUSSEY!!!

what a knock Mr Cricket! Hats off to you! I am not an Aussie fan but I cant stop admiring you and your consistency right from your debut at age 30+; I feel doubly proud that a Chennai Super King won last night's match for Australia.... May be next year if you join CSK, we will use you better......

Posted by gmathew on (May 15, 2010, 5:19 GMT)

Pakistan posted a huge total...and then rested on their laurels. Afridi is merely a boom boom hitter, no strategist. He assumed in fairly simply that Australia will go for boundaries and posted fielders at the boundary line.Neither did he set the field for players/bowlers.

Result? One and twos leaked right thru the game. He did not set the field for players. In the end one could see him running all over the place to stem the run flow. It was too late. His strategy: we have a huge total. No one is going to beat us. Simple.

And that Pakistani coach Waqar Younis-beats me why he has a smug smile on his face whenever Paksitani's were losing. He sat there like a buddha statue-no movement, no emotion, no support ofr his players, nothing?

One thing should be said: It was a game worth watching. Thanks both sides for the entertainment.

what a shame, there is no Asian team in the final...doubt if anybody turns up to watch...I know England have a lot of supporters in the carribean...and thats good..but there won't be too many aussies to cheer their team. I hope England wins...they have always been a team of underachievers, this is their biggest chance. And personally, I would like Australia to loose. Addmitedly, they win all matches, but they don't win any fans. They are a bunch of bullies who don't respect the spirit of the game. Remember the West Indies series down under. And what about the treatment dished out to Harbhajan. And talking of Ricky Ponting, he is not one tenth as talented as the aussie press make him out to be. And I believe he is the best example of how not to conduct yourself on a cricket field. Go England Go...

Watched the match at a cafe in Lahore with crazy cricket fans and all. Screaming, applauding sixes and good Pakistani overs and what not. Applauding till the 18th over of the Australian innings. Walking out as soon as the last six was hit. The first time I've felt such a strong flurry of emotions in my myself and cricket fans around me, this decade. We walked in to watch the match, cheery Pakistani fans. We left, bi-polar.

Australia - Fit uber-amazing, arrogant, rowdy tagline here. The best, for sure.

This the best one Twenty20 match I've ever enjoyed !!!!

Posted by   on (May 15, 2010, 5:02 GMT)

Great Match! Disappointment in the end Imran Khan suggested a day before 1 Pakistan should adopt a 'wicket-taking' strategy if they want to retain the Twenty20 crown, not just to focus on preventing runs. 2. "Pakistan should use fast bowler Mohammad Asif as an attacking bowler and not as a 'run stopper." Analysis All the sixes were hit on spinners except the first ball six of Abdur Razzaq. Muhammad Aamer conceded no six and took three wickets. Where was Muhammad Asif? (Muhammad Hafeez should have been replaced by a fast bowler. See Statistics of all players) Too much defensive field in the final 3 overs. Taking 2's of Muhammad Aamer was made easy. Only two wickets in the final 7.5 overs. Should have given the final penultimate and final overs to Abdur Razzaq and Muhammd Aamer, not to a spinner. All credit to Saeed Ajmal, Abdur Rehman for their bowling efforts throughout the tournament. The final 3 overs: You have to get it right to the Australians to the last ball.

Michael Hussey ... THE FINISHER ... The Destroyer ??? ... Well if u ask me Whether Aussies can win this T20 World Cup or not ... i will always answer, "Only if there is a Michael Hussey" ... Outstanding performance through out the Series ... He started off by killing Bangladeshi Dreams and hopefully will stop only after defeating another English Fairy Tale ... I only wish that the Final becomes the best display of the power of destruction of MICHAEL HUSSEY ...

Well done Pakistan..Many congrats from SL..U have nothing to regret coz the team played brilliantly but guess that Aus have sum of the strongest batsmen in world cricket to overhaul this score in the last few overs.

It was one of the best games i've seen ever. Its one of the memorable performances of M Hussey and no doubt ha had played one of the best innings ever played by any one.

BUT only the Standard of AMPIRING is not even good but it was bad. The second ball of first over of Aair went to wide which is just a bull the stump of White............the ampire take the decision too early, he have to take his time same is with Johnson's runout.

It just like if any one take decision against AMERICA, the country have to think more then twice; same is in cricket, no one make decision against AUSTRILA????? Why it happens?

At the end well played Hussey & Aus.

Posted by shreyu123 on (May 15, 2010, 4:50 GMT)

oh Mr. shahid afridi,

we believe pakistan don't learn from mistakes. Like in earlier final where Pakistan lost to India, you should have used some strategy as applied by M.S.Dhoni.

The balling cahnge was crucial & you should have kept Mohd. Aamir as a finisher for whom Hussey would have shown some respect out of fear & not Saaed Ajmal.

Thank god Ponting was not there otherwise your captaincy skills would have severly damaged.

Posted by DownAtThirdMan on (May 15, 2010, 4:45 GMT)

At the highest level cricket has always been a battle of will power. It is a rare game that shows this as well as last night's match. Congratulations to all the players. There could be as strong a psychological reaction for the victors as among the losers. Let's hope the final is as good.

Posted by Vindaliew on (May 15, 2010, 4:38 GMT)

As much as I wanted Pakistan to win, I cannot help but feel good watching Hussey silence his critics who were doubting his place in the side barely a few months ago. Form is temporary, but class is permanent. He rates this better than Adelaide, and it probably was. Here, Australia would never have gotten a sniff if it wasn't for him.

I'll still hope England win (anyone but the king of the hill, really), but I'm really really happy for Hussey, and honoured to have been following this match on Cricinfo witnessing history and surely one of the greatest triumphs for T20 cricket.

Posted by BapiDas on (May 15, 2010, 4:38 GMT)

The Aussies proved once again that the game is not over until the last wicket has fallen or the last run has been score or the last ball has been bowled! Their self belief is what makes them champions!

Sad that Pak lost despite doing enough to win a big match. All credit to Mike Hussey for playing a blinder. Dhoni and Co will do well to watch videos of this match a 1000 times to understand what it means to play good cricket.

but I think that their big team is now remains big only papers and they played very odd cricket and deserved to be kicked out of the tournament .

This is the difference between Australia and South Africa. Last year Pakistan produced a good performance against South Africa at this stage and South Africa crumbled. This year they produced a great performance against Australia and Australia won. When the going gets tough the tough get going and Australia are the toughest team in world cricket

Posted by ExcitedElectron on (May 15, 2010, 4:26 GMT)

Oh !! Really sensational !!rea;;y really sensational performance by relatively weak team of Pakistan against a team which have won all the games it was really sensational for me to say that this team in Asia must have to be given a real credit for their thrilling performance because no team from Asia is at this time able to beat australia ,but that match was highly intense for australia & i give all the credit to the Pakistan team who finally almost won the game but ,No one can do nothing when Allah have wrote the victory in favor of a particular team like australia .

And now I want England to show australians that what is the taste of losing the crown when not deserving ,I say that because now i am tired of watching australians the un mannered people at the front line.

And at the end I want to mention one very important thing here that this article smells like it was written by an indian who traditionally bigot with Pkaistanis.

I am so proud to be an Aussie today. To Neutral Fan, thank you, yes, we have got a great system in OZ. How do you teach people to perform under pressure? I guess our identity is based on our history, the underdogs, the battlers, we had to scrap and fight to build our great nation. Our sports people always fight above our weight. Why is that? I guess its our psyche to never give in and be at our most dangerous with our backs to the wall. This game was one of the greatest limited over fixtures that you'll ever see, it had everything that the other semi didn't, a contest. Two worthy opponents, (in this format only), pressure, drama, skill, class, what other superlatives can I add? Awesome performance by Pakistan, hold your heads high. You nearly succeeded in pulling off the biggest form reversal in history. Australia stand tall, that was the great escape. Michael HUSSY you are Mr. Cricket, you represent all that is great about the Australians as a sporting nation. Fantastic endorsement!

Later the yesterday night was not good to witness for Aussie fans but a quarterly hour of today's morning just brought up an unbelievable cricketing action for all fans.. from nowhere hoping to win Australia cracked out their place in their first T20 world cup.. Again Mike Hussey making damage.. 39 out 40 overs pakis were on top and then a drastic change occured in 40th which was major setback to them.. The ACB which was thinking of throwing hussey out last year, commented "This is the Best Innings We have Witnessed under crucial circumstances where we won" I hope they have changed their minds by now.. but its too late i guess because hussey will retire later this year.. Definately after seeing yesterdays performance of Aussies Paul Collingwood must have given his team a long Speech... lets see what happens on Sunday..!!!

Not to rain on anyone parade but the bowling in that last over was truly rubbish: short -> half volley -> short and wide. You cant expect to win games when you throw up such lollies towards the end.

This was a great match. Pakistan played excellently. Congratulations to the whole team and the country. Having lost it in the last over, to some great batting is No Shame at all. The better team won, but the result doesn't show the grit with which Pakistan played. Great job everyone. You tried your best. I hope they all learn from this and proceed to do much better in future. Well done, I am proud of you all. I am hopeful we can build on this team. I have One request, to not allow politics to come into the team and BCCP. This is a tall order, but a doable one, if everyone strives for it and be above board. Without politics and choosing the best team, I am sure we can beat any team in the world. We do have the talent. But unfortunately we beat ourselves too frequently. BCCP please listen and do us all proud.

A great game of Cricket. To be remembered for a long time. I am not sure the Final will be as exciting....... .

For the first time in my life, I want to give up my Indian citizenship. I want to be an Australian. What joy they bring to their fans and followers all over the world.

Prior, I seriously hoped for a Pak win and always inside me want Aussies to loose especially after the cheating episode that ruled the Test series down under. But boy I forgive them today. Their problem is that they just do not know what loosing is! Mike Hussey, you are not only Mr. Cricket, you are the GOD of Cricket. Oh my, what belief in yourself, I am still breathless, only regaining some speech...

A perfect final in place now between the two most deserving teams. Can hardly wait... May the best team WIN !

Any takers of my Indian citizenship !?

The innings played by Australia was gud, but I still felt that Pakistan could have won it. They did not play so well in the death overs, not a good option to try a spinner in the last over when you had a player like Razzak a pacer. Pakistan lost the plot in the final overs and I was sure that they would lose since the fighting spirit was diminishing. Hopefully England will give the Aussies a good fight and we can expect a thrilling finals - the same like this one.

Awesome innings....but felt sorry for Pakistan, because the kind of courage they had shown was unbeleivable.. The famous Pakistani spirit almost carried them through.... One thing is clear, like Ajantha Mendis earlier, Saeed Ajmal's X Factor has been worked out and he is not an unknown commodiy anymore

this is probably the best chase in t 20.Given this is a semifinal only Australia could have pulled this out they are the only team that dont collapse under pressure they are not chokers like SA.they have given this tournament every thing quality fast bowling destructive batting and amazing fielding. In the end they probably deserve to get into the final given the quality of cricket they played pakistan dont deserve to be in the final let alone they did not deserve to be in the semis in the first place

This match reminded me of the epic fight between Foreman and Ali. Foreman was the dominant and aggressive boxer till Ali knocked him out cold. Now back to cricket.

The way Pakistan played the last 10 balls of their innings despite having many wickets in hand was the real difference between the two teams. While Pakistan'si most dashing players (Umar Akmal/Razzaq) were contented in taking singles and one bye on most of these balls, Australians massacred Pakistani bowling in these last balls.

While Pakistan did not score a single boundary in their last 10 balls, the champions plundered them with three sixes and two fours in their last 6 balls! Another 20-25 runs by Pakistan in their last 10 balls (they had the wickets) would have made the match out of even Australia's reach.

Neutral fan, read the above article, it might give you some inkling about why Aust won last night. But a hint from me to get you started, you want to see Aust lose more than you want to see Pakistan win. Your countrys attitude to cricket is based on similer lines which is why its in such a disgraceful mess. and is why you lost again last night. Negative attitudes work no better in sport than they do anywhere else. Enjoy your day, I am.

To think some Aussies (me included) were calling for Mike's head a few months ago. I'll be having humble pie with my breakfast this morning. I'm still a bit concerned about Australia's (in)ability to play against quality spin, as we still had no idea against Ajmal and were lucky he bowled a few short ones in the last over. I think Swann will have a huge part to play in the final.

Full credit to Pakistan, they dispelled any doubts that they didn't deserve to make the semi-finals. Unfortunately for them they walked into a man in form and on a mission.

Posted by azaro on (May 15, 2010, 1:46 GMT)

It is not that the Aussies are better cricketers technically but no one can beat them for mental toughness and confidence - they can always find a way to win.

Posted by   on (May 15, 2010, 1:37 GMT)

I think this shows that there is still justice in the cricketing world. All said and done, we prefer a team that has won "all" their super-8 matches to a team that pretty much lost all their matches except one to enter the finals.

The best T20 innings ever..hope shane warne was watching..

It was around 2 am in the morning here when Cameron White got out! Sensing defeat, I switched off my TV and went to sleep. But I could not get sleep as all I could do was think Australia playing the best cricket up to today but still not winning the only major tournament they have not won. Then i decided to check the score at cricinfo and was shocked too see them come out on top!! Reading the commentary here gave me goosebumps!! Wonder what would have been the case had I watched the full match!! Sad missed the end of the game, glad aussie made it to the finals!!

This was like the alliance triumphing over the empire....good cricket over the T20 slap-happy style. Pakistan played well, but Hussey was just, well, incredible. Australia vs England.... it's going to be epic, even for the haters of T20.

Posted by LesGrossman on (May 15, 2010, 1:07 GMT)

Order will soon be restored, the aussies are no. 1 in ODI's and will soon be no. 1 in T20's. In less than a year they will take back the no.1 in tests from the lazy and corrupt indians. You just can't deny the team with the best work ethic, and the aussies will enter another period of dominance in the coming years. Taste it world, taste it!

Posted by   on (May 15, 2010, 1:01 GMT)

what a match that was. A real nail-biter, mike hussey played really well. But i am very happy with Pakistan's performance.Against all odds Pakistan gave tough time to Australia. Before the match no body could have believed that Pakistan will be posting a total of 191 runs, against lethal attack of Australia, who through out the tournament won matches single handedly.Pakistan proved that they deserved a semifinal spot.Pakistan will always be serious contendar of ICC WORLD T20.

Posted by A.P.B. on (May 15, 2010, 0:59 GMT)

WOW! Proud to be an Aussie! Good effort by Pakistan too. One of those great games where both teams deserved to win. At the start of the tournament I was curious why Hussey was batting at 7, but as it has gone on I understand completely.

Posted by muby23 on (May 15, 2010, 0:53 GMT)

Bravo Pakistan, i have all the respect of the world for the young and inexperienced Pakistani team we lost though but we played really well...we made to semi final and almost knocked the best team of the world out even though we don't have any big names like Indian team has ( I am not taunting Indian fans i am just giving an example) i think guys like umar and amir will perform better in future , we should be looking for new players, misbah is getting older, to me Hafiz was a bad choice we should give the 7 feet tall speedster Irfan a chance to create a new havoc in cricketing world, good luck and well played Pakistan.

Posted by deardr on (May 15, 2010, 0:47 GMT)

I m very sad on loss of semifinal.Pakistan could have easily won this match, after putting 191 on the board and taking earlier wickets match was in complete control of Pakistan but Unfortunately my country lost this match! I think afridi should have given last over to razzaq instead of saeed ajmal cos it is difficult to hit consecutive sixes to a fast bowler. Australia was in a do or die situation and it is easy to hit spinner over boundary as compared to fast bowler, moreover in last few overs Pakistan could have tightened the boweling cos Australia is a strong team which should not be taken lightly till the last ball. I think after putting 191 on the board and taking earlier wickets may be Pakistani team became little over confidant that they will win easily anyways today Pakistan played better as compared to earlier games and luck also didn't favour my country team so sad can't control my sadness!,after loosing so many times to Australia b4 Pakistan had a gr8 chance but to no avail.

Though I am not a big fan of T20 , but this is what we really called competitive cricket , probably the best T20 match since this format started , not like stupid IPL which is totally worthless.

A SUPERB INNINGS and A commitment with calm confidence. You could see it in his eyes as he faced up to the first of the 4 balls that earned him the kudos.Hope our "greats" were watching.Flashing money and making statements is not Cricket.Learn from these Aussies. They are awesome. This man was found fit for international arena at age 32 and now at 36 he is playing like he is in his 20s.Runs fast between wickets, fields remarkably well and WINS.

It really is amazing to think that Michael Hussey only just sneaked into the squad and furthermore, wasn't even expected to get too much of an opportunity! He is a remarkable player and that was truly special, there aren't many players who can finish like that. Bevan was the true master in these situations but I can't help but think that Mike Hussey can do a job as good if not better. Credit to Pakistan for lifting their game the way they did, they did extremely well against the pace and put up a good score, no shame in losing a game like that. Good on you Mr. Cricket and Aussies for the cup!

Posted by GreatWhitePathan on (May 15, 2010, 0:33 GMT)

That was simply incredible and unbelievable. I am still reeling in shock how Australia managed to score 70 off the last 5 overs.

I dont want to blame Pakistan because they tried their hearts out but I couldn't understand why the Pakistani spinners were not spearing in yorkers into the bats.

Ajmal bowled the perfect yorker to Johnson at the beginning of the last over and they scrambled a single but then he served up juicy length balls to Hussey who smashed them out of the ground.

All the spinners needed to do was to bowl yorker length balls at the death and even low full tosses and they would have won the game. Instead, they served up nice deliveries on a platter and Australia stuffed their faces with the servings.

Having said all that, it was still an incredible chase, one that will not be repeated for a long time.

Lets hope the Pakistanis can finally win a game against Australia in the summer...

From a stunned Pakistani fan.. I am going to bed thinking what if!!!

Wow, it's Super Hussey bringing us back from the dead! Unbelievable play, that's how you do it!! Well played Pakistan, you should be proud. I'm pretty sure none of my fellow Aussie's will gloat over this, everyone can see that Pakistan played very well and probably deserved to win in many ways. Bring on England!!

I am afraid. Afraid for the English team. At this rate the Australian s will post 200 plus - if they bat first and I so hope that they bat first ! Hmmmmmmmmmmm!

Posted by Decorum on (May 15, 2010, 0:18 GMT)

Kudos to the gracious Pakistani fans in this thread (and, indeed, the author of this Bulletin). Such grace is not always the norm in Cricinfo discussions and, particularly in the circumstances of such a close game, is really to be respected. I'm a Kiwi and I know very well what it's like to be pipped by the Aussies (in a range of sports!) and your sportsmanship is admirable. Yes, a great game that reflects well on both teams.

Posted by   on (May 15, 2010, 0:15 GMT)

Cricket administrators in other countries should look seriously at the Australian module of school, club and representative cricket - if Australia had fielded their A,B,C & D sides in this competition or any other form of cricket there's a good chance they would all be in the semis, so strong is the depth and infrastructure of their system. Bad luck Pakistan on this occasion but hold your heads high - you played a great match.

Posted by   on (May 15, 2010, 0:10 GMT)

It was a fantastic game of cricket! someone had to win, after all its a game, but it doesnt happen often that at the end of the day, cricket wins over everything! Today it was such a game. Pakistan was brilliant and once again proved why they truly deserved the worldcup last year, unlike the Indian team which now seems as if the first world cup was a big fluke and mainly Pakistan had gifted the world cup to India due to Misbah's nut shot and Mr.Dhoni's good luck. However, two years down the line, Mr.Dhoni doesnt have his luck any more and Pakistan have got their brains back, they somehow dont self destruct anymore in crunch games which was delightful to see! Aussies, as usual, when they are determined, impossible just happens, luck never bothers them as they write their own destiny by their grit...what mental strength, unbelievable! It leaves you amazed at the end of the day wondering, that if you throw these guys in middle of atlantic ocean, they ll swim their way back to the shore!

Congrats to Aussies for winning the semi-final after getting knocked-out in last two world cups with weak performance. Lets see if Aussies can repeat their performance against England. Congrats to Pakistan on being the only team in the World Cup history to make it to atleast the semi-final. This particular world cup they were the only team to bowl out the Aussies within 20 overs in their first game, and the team that score the top two highest score against the Aussies (191 for six in semi-fina, and 155 in first round). Pakistan performed to their expectation given that they did not have Umar Gul (last two world fast bowler), plus another 3 members of last two world cup not available (Younis, Naved, and Sohaib). This Pakistan team actually over-achieved given that they did not have its best line-up, and that too for non-fitness reasons.

England and Austrailia have to thank PCB for ensuring that winning Pakistan team of last two years was destroyed before the world cup began.

If they were in the other semi final, they would have won. Afridi, I admire your talents and rate you as one of the most destructive players in the game but please give up the Captaincy, it inhibits your natural game too much. Great game.

I am a diehard Pakistani. No shame to Pakistan for loosing to Australia like this. The 'Australianism' was at its best display in this game. It was the years of hardwork of the Auzzie cricket system that ultimately enabled the Australians to come off with the victory. Any other team (SA, India, SL,...) would have lost to Pakistan, but not the Australians. Infact, had Pakistan won, it would have been a sort of injustice, if seen in the bigger picture. The Auzzie system where discipline, sheer hardwork, professionalism and ulitmate competitiveness are the priciples inculcated, loosing to the Pakistani system which is totally opposite to the Auzzie's, except that the Pakistanis have exceptional (may be the best) cricketing talent, does not make sense in the Godly ways. It is as simple, the one who has faith (talent), works hard and prepares well wins. Just the faith (talent) is not simply enough or in other words it is not fair to win just on talent. GOOD LUCK Auzzies.

Well played Pakistan and Australia, a great game to watch. Strangely, this match is very similar to the recent IPL match between CSK and KXII Punjab. KXII batted first and scored 190 plus. When CSK batted next, KXII looked like winning until the last 2 overs where 30 runs were needed. CSK came with some brilliant hitting in the last 2 overs to win. Hussey was part of the winning CSK team but he was merely warming the benches then. Today he showed his true class one more time.

Australia are all over this thing like a rash! Who needs BOOM BOOM AFRIDI when you've got the best finisher in the world... MIKE HUSSEY!! Shows you can still have a sufficient technique in T20, (eg. Mahela Jayawardene) rather than just CRASH, BASH, OUT!!! Go Australia for the final!!

Well done Oz you deserved to win but dont get carried away as it was a sub standard Pakistan team courtesy of Mr Butt. England on the other hand is a different kettle of fish and will no doubt be at its best and will show how to play t20 against a team who are at full strength and in form....Promise.....!!!!!! As much as I would like somebody to beat Australia in any form of cricket it just seems hard , that is because we never appreciate a good cricket when we see one ,we always see their dominence of the game which sometimes becomes very boring to watch, we forget that they are not only better but too perfect to be a team ,from opening pair to their last player , they work hard and know how to play , don't think that I am a Aussie fan , I am a die hard Pakistani fan who just happen to now respect where it's due to the " AUSSIE" wow I really did appreciate both of the teams to play like it was a Final.. Thank you Team Pakistan and Team Australia , I really do appreciate what you guys had done today, and Good Luck to the Aussies....

Had it not been Austrailia, I am sure, Pakistan would have won this match against any opposition with this kind of display... Austrailian bowling, which distroyed everyline up, looked clueless today and for the first 10 overs of their batting they seemed going in the wrong direction. Yet again Australianism prevailed!!!

Posted by Sakib241 on (May 14, 2010, 23:31 GMT)

I doubt Hussey to be a human. And those who claim to be the best in the world should learn something about mental strength from him, let alone the whole Australian team. South Africa and India are both good teams. But even at their very best they cannot produce a piece of brilliance like the Aussies do time and time again. Feeling sorry for Pakistan though. They should be really proud of themselves for putting up a great show for fans watching them play deep into midnight.

Posted by   on (May 14, 2010, 23:26 GMT)

Australia have had there one bad game of the tournament and still won I really think now that they will go on and win the World Cup it sucks as I thought England would have more of a chance of beating Pakistan than the Aussies :(

Posted by capnles on (May 14, 2010, 23:26 GMT)

We were worried that the real Pakistan would turn up to play today and, my word, did they nearly pull off an epic victory. Well played by Pakistan; Hussey managed to do what only he seems capable of to deny you a famous victory.

I thought Pakistan would win the tournament, so I really can't see the Poms coming close in the final against the Aussies in this kind of form. As usual in these types of tournaments, the Poms will choke under pressure.

Huss was sensational! Mighty proud of him and the team. That innings was one to carry in the mind forever. Any other game it would have still been epic but to see it done in a semi-final was special and defined the attitude to give the opposition nothing and not give in. Cam White can't be overlooked though. Invaluable innings from him. Can't wait for the final and it was a pleasure to have watched the game to see the Huss do some damage with the willow blade. Bring on England!

As good as 10 Australian players are, Michael Clarke is an absolute disgrace. Once again, playing to save his wicket, not the game, 17 off 20 balls when we needed 10 an over. Thank god for White and the irreplaceable Hussey.

Posted by   on (May 14, 2010, 23:05 GMT)

Mr Cricket proved why he is rightly called so. When White was gone, everybody would have switched off the TV and boy oh boy..WhaaadaaaaaapLaaaaya Hussey is. I am sure he would be sending shock waves across entire country of Pakistan, when they wake up too check the morning news paper. White should be groomed to be the captain, Pup is not a very good T20 captain. It is obvious from the way he misread the pitch and went ahead with more of a pace attack. There was just 2/3 hours when Paksitan were contained, bowling changes were not astute. Clarke should not be T20 captain. He is out of form, no big technical moves on the field to contain runs ...

I was hoping for Pak to win and it looked like they were going to but what a display of awesome hitting and holding ones nerves till the end, i think thats the real difference between Aussies and rest of the world, they can do it over and over again and have multiple players who can do it. This time Pak didn't get knocked out in the first round this one went to the last second of round 12. This was a treat to watch regardless of which team one supports. Its going to be hard for Engalnd to stop this raging bull.

I'm a very proud Aussie this morning. apart from having loved Mike Hussey from the first time i watched him play for WA, the boys are just playing great cricket. England will be a serious test. KP is in superb form, and their bowlers are doing everything a good team needs them to do. Osman - your article was excellent. I havent read anything of yours before but i'll certainly be looking for your work in the future. I didnt watch it on TV, rather just woke up and saw the stuff on cricinfo, and your wonderful description of the game almost put me in the ground, so descriptive it was. one thing that really annoyed me about the IPL was the unofficial boycott of Pakistani players. Pakistan would have 4 players inside the "World top 20 players". Guys like the Akmals, Boom Boom and Butt are great players - surely India can open it's heart to these wonderful players. Getting back to Huss, he is absolutely loved in the Aussie dressing rooms. He is all things in any situation - Mr Fixit

The results shows even opposing team score whatever amount of runs still Australia overcome and win it. As I followed the entire 20 overs worldcup, the cricket team of Australia didn't met a real challenge. Other teams of the cricket world should show some resilient otherwise it would be cake walk for the Australians as always.

Great effort Pakistan, but Aussie showed real "guts and determination" to win. Perhaps Gavaskar and Shastri can explain what that means to the BCCI and see if they can buy some for India! Apart from getting fit and learning to field G&D would go a long way to giving India a chance in future. Mummy's boys by comparison with the real men of Aussie! Should be a fantastic contest against the Poms on that fearsome thing- a fast bouncy pitch at Kensington Oval. Suspicion is that BCCI will respond by producing the lowest and slowest tracks for next year's ODI World Cup- however can they somehow buy that elusive "G&D"?

Posted by HaveYouGotYourBox on (May 14, 2010, 22:53 GMT)

Wow, just read the result (don't have Pay TV and no free-to-air coverage in Oz). What a game it must have been to wach. The mercurial Pakistanis almost pull off another coup, but are thwarted by a man semmingly always recently on borrowed time in Australian colours. Coolness under pressure:that's what it is all about. The Pakistanis must be shattered, as they could not have batted better, and their bowling did the job until the last few overs. Australia would have been shattered to lose, after winning 5 games straight. Unfortunately, this is sport and there has to be a winner and a loser.

Posted by THEJUICE on (May 14, 2010, 22:49 GMT)

Well I have to admit that as a die hard Aussie cricket fan, that this was by far and away the most unbelievable.....against the odds victory of all, and let me tell you, there have been a great many. Talk about staying cool and never saying die.

Have just now watched a replay of the game as followed on cricinfo at the office today, and the one thing I must admit to feeling is a little sorry for the Pakistan team and crew. TO have played so well, batted incredibly well against the best attack in the contest, and put so much pressure on Aus in the first 15 overs of the run chase and yet to come up short is utterly crushing for them. Hopefully they hold their heads up high and take pride in their performance. Great game, great innings by Hussey.

Surely I can't be the only person in the world who despises the use of the word 'maximum' ? Australia are deserving winners. But Pakistan have lost the won game.Pakistans selection of team was not right as they needed another fast bowler in playing 11 which was required by pakistan in last few overs.Giving bowl to Ajmal in last over was not a good option even he is a good bowler, you can expect 6's from spinner. Pakistan didnt require 4 spinners in the team. Pakistan could have given chance toyoung player Hammad Azam as he got pace & he can bat,I've seen him playing under 19 matches.I was surprised to read Afridis comment that Hammad Azam has not got experience & won't be able to handle pressure, and he needs few international games, but why did you choose him first place in the 15 man Squad if he is not good enough, you must have quality players in the team who can fill others place if they are out of form. Pakistan must give110% even they think they have won the game and keep pressure on which they didn't do in this game & in other games they played & they must go for kill.

Posted by Longmemory on (May 14, 2010, 22:33 GMT)

Wonderful show by Pakistan who continue to amaze, and by the Aussies who remain a cut above the rest at all times. A great match. Like so many others, I too never learn. At about the start of the 16th over or so, as yet another Aussie fell, I logged off cricinfo and left for work. Only now, hours later, did I log back on to see what the winners and losers had to say - except that they had been reversed in my absence!! Absolutely stunned when I read the heist Hussey had pulled off. Amazing.

Amazing cricket from Hussy but Pakistan has time and again proven to be the most fearsome and formidable opponent on a day. It was a great match played by the two most entertaining teams. No doubt.......what would be cricket without a Pakistan team! It's about time that all the pundits who were making so much noise aobut Pakistan's qualification into the semis should accept that Paksitan duely qualified and produced one of the most amazing games in T20 history along with Australia.

I'm proud to be Pakistani today. Disappointed, but NOT disgraced. The only team that makes other teams play out of their skins!

For the first time, I saw fear in eyes of Aussie players. They almost...ALMOST gave up.

Amazing match. Still Speechless. Heartbreaking stuff. I didn't realize I was this emotionally vulnerable to Cricket.

Stupidity it is ...ha Afridi just threw the game away, it was one of the worst captiancy ever by Afridi. 18 runs to win hussey in the crease and He send a spinner to bowl the last over, even a 12 year wouldnt do such a blunder in this format of cricket. Afridi was not at all watching the game, he just though 191 is never rechable. If he was watching he should have seen australia were hitting 6's more than 4's, and they shoud have tightened long back,, Afridi did nothing other than noraml bowling and fielding.......gone man , take the whole blame urself

Posted by ssid on (May 14, 2010, 22:26 GMT)

Somehow Australia gets better of Pakistan from hopeless situations. I think Pakistan let the intensity drop a bit in the final overs. Also it will be very interesting to see how Saeed Ajmal has actually performed against left handers. I just have a feeling that his record against left handers is not so impressive.

Posted by Nijnoz on (May 14, 2010, 22:24 GMT)

Kudo's to Pakistan who took the fight to the Aussies . If we had lost, I would have had peace with it , it was a well deserved victory for Pakistan. But for Australiato win a 190+ chase .. This is how legends are created..

Can't help but notice that Farhan-Sg, who's been very vocal about how Australia should "Be very Afraidi" and how they were going to get slaughtered is noticably absent from this thread :p

Unbelievable game though - The Pakistan team that can be world-beaters actually turning up to the game, and the Aussies, as always, seeming to play their best in the finals end of the competition.

I hope the final provides as much nail-biting tension, though I might die from a freaking hear attack if it comes down to the last over again :)

Saeed Ajmal was simply unplayable for right handers but he was not good against the left handers, before the last over he was hit for a six by M. Hussey and Ajmal was saying that to afridi that hussey that boll comes to him that dosra, but he kept bowling from that side, he should have bowled from other side so ball would have pitched on the off stumps of him, but Pakistan will be back, they showed that they r still the very best in the world.

Even though it hurts that we lost from such a powerful position but as said before a great game of cricket and very very well played team Pakistan. You gave it your best but after all its a game and we lost to a better team. No doubt best game of T20 cricket's short history.

I cant believe it, Pakistan lost... it was a remarkable match, 191 is an amazing score but once again we have lost to Australia.

Posted by dil333 on (May 14, 2010, 22:00 GMT)

Not taking anything away from Australia, but it was Pakistan who lost it, rather than Australia who won it, just like the Sydney Test. You don't seem much teams doign the same.

Interesting today, the previews and articles all said Australia's bowlers would be doing the damage, but it shows they can't do anything unless the track is bouncy or supports them, and it wasn't today in St Lucia.

The final is in Barbados though; we'll soon see.

Atleast we lost with dignity.

Australia is the best team in the world in any format!! no doubt about that... and HUSSEY what can i say about u man.. U R THE BEST! luv u man.. keep up the good work man!!

Posted by   on (May 14, 2010, 21:58 GMT)

Probably one of the finest innings and the greatest defeats of all time...something for the BCCI to think about rather than making money & build hopes of millions of fans in India that they are the best!

Posted by   on (May 14, 2010, 21:56 GMT)

What a game, you cannot ask for more (except for Pak to win - my bias). Having said that, I'm pleased and happy about the way Pak played. It shows they still have the guts and can raise the bar. Australia, good on you. On the day you were the better team, perhaps until the 19th over.

Proud to be a Pakistani, keep it up, this is the spirit to play with, you will do even better next time InshAllah.

------//moving forward //-------------

At this rate, Eng has their work cut out for them.

GO Ausiz (hey I want the cup in Southern Hemisphere) ;)

38 required in 12 balls; outstanding bowling; a lesser man would have crumbled! Mr Cricket you RULE! I am proud to be an Aussie who missed sleep to see such brilliant cricket, and to be honest, not just Australian cricket. Perhaps this match should have been the final. I fail to see that England will prove to be an as admirable opponent as Pakistan were today. Aussie ... Aussie ... Aussie ... Oy ... Oy ... Oy!

Posted by   on (May 14, 2010, 21:55 GMT)

To be honest with u guys no doubt aussies play very welled but i feel like pakistan gave away this game number one why dint they play with 3 first bowler number 2 if they wanna have 2 first bowler why not muhmmad asif u dont think so asif is better bowler then razzaq razzaq is too old and why dint he gave last over to razzaq bez previous over ajmal gave away 14 runs any wy i am stunned sad nothing i can do but captancy of afrdi was suck they should kick mibah ul haq out haffez out razzq out and give uyoungster a chance thanxz

Posted by MeerTaqi on (May 14, 2010, 21:48 GMT)

It was an exciting semifinal, both the teams managed to enter semifinals, one managed to enter by doing hard work and the other through prayers only. Finally the prayers of the hard workers were answered. Pakistan tried hard but couldnt manage to hold the Australian champs

This is the very reason that why Michael Hussey is known as Mr.Cricket. A man who can change the tune anytime he wants. Todays innings is really one of his very best. When we lost Bear, that time we were on the verge of exiting but Huss, yet another stunning performance. Now we reached the finals, from here no looking back, Just beat the poms and get the job done.

Posted by Anneeq on (May 14, 2010, 21:46 GMT)

Hussey saved the Aussies skin, lets not even attempt to give Cameron White some of the limelight, yes he played ok but Hussey pulled a rabbit out of the hat. Aus did not deserve to win that match, the bowling was flat, that batting was suspect and the fielding was average. The best team lost today. But if u judge it by consistency, Aus deserved it. Pk's fielding was good, the bowling even better, the batting 1st class.

I hate it whenever Aus win i really do, but u have to admire what they did today. I doubt this will ever happen again, its a once in a life time thing. We have just witnessed the single greatest cricketing comeback ever. Yes CRICKETING that includes tests, odis and T20s. Even better than Sydney, because in Sydney MoYo handed them victory whereas here Hussey performed mission impossible.

As a Pakistani im very proud of how my country performed today. In Aus we were scared of them, here we had them by the balls. They somehow faught back.

Posted by   on (May 14, 2010, 21:45 GMT)

to hell afridi....i cant understand the decision of playing with just 1 fast bowler against worlds best players..when u have bowlers like sami and asif..and wat the hell hafeez is doing in the team...they should hav tried hammad azam...i think razzak showld bowl last over....well ausies showed they r da best...

Posted by Mitcher on (May 14, 2010, 21:42 GMT)

Michael Hussey you absolute genius!!! This guy just never gives up. I only wish i'd stuck with the match but in my eternal softness I couldn't stay up. Bowlers will no doubt be relieved to return to a bouncy wicket for the final. P.s. Neutral_fan: Think you'll have to change your nick after your frank admission about wishing Aus lose.

Posted by nafzak on (May 14, 2010, 21:39 GMT)

Well well!! I said in these blogs a few days ago that Pakistan is due as they always do and will sneak up as they did in teh WC in cornered tigers i said.

Well, they did, but alas, the Aussies themselves rored like king of the jungle that they are. Pakistana and their supporters need not hang their heads though. They fought a hard fight. All tournament the Aussies played and looked like champions. They were just a little better today and in the end, the better and more deserved team won. In fact, Cricket, lovely Cricket is the true winner today. Now, the question is; how do you top this? Can Australia vs England do it? Oh, it would be fun to watch them try, won't it? To my home, the West Indies.. finally we got to see some good cricket. So, it ain't us and it ain't test cricket, but I hope the team watching and learning. Cricket Lovely Cricket, In St Lucia where i saw it!

What a game of cricket... I will live that game for years... AUS is by far the best team we've seen in history of t20, and boy o boy... how the underdog Pakistanis bounced back and gave them a run for their money... As a Pakistani, I will say that I will cherish that loss forever... Thankyou AUS and PAK, Cricket owe so much to both of you

no complains with the pakistan's team though, they fought hard and produced the best ever match t20 fans have every experienced

Now I understood..Y M.Hussey is call Mr.Cricket...he deserves it. Well played Pakistan was a match that deserve to be displayed in Semi-final place...and Mr.Cricket is no doubt a prime example of a person with class..and every young cricketer should learn to hold nerves like HIM... Those who missed this match..miss forever..highlights couldn't match this excitement.... He has such a great cricket brain...and thats he proved again today...He didnt came out of crease...he hit sixes on back-foot....which pakistani team couldn't act pro-active..end of the day...Great match of cricket...

Without a shadow of doubt, this time around its deserving teams in the finals. Pakistan was lucky enough to be in the semi-finals and that was it, can't get lucky all the time. I bet nobody can complain now. Apart from the T20 D/L screw up loss for England against West Indies, both teams have played excellent cricket. blown up all the oppositions they've played against. Would have been a shame had Pakistan made it to the finals, for the way they have performed this time. How on earth Afridi can captain a side. No offense, i bet PCB didn't have another option.

Posted by Chiswasa on (May 14, 2010, 21:21 GMT)

What an incredible run chase. Hussey is, as Michael Clarke describes 'a freak'! Alot of credit has to go to Cameron White. He set up the innings and Hussey batted on pure instinct. It makes me extremely proud to be an aussie and it is days like today that gives us the 'never die' attitude. The Australian Cricket Team has brought yet another day of unbelievable joy! Thanks guys and best wishes for the final. I won't miss a ball & can't wait to see you all in Clontarf, DUBLIN on 17th July.

Posted by   on (May 14, 2010, 21:18 GMT)

G U T T E D.. sucker punch.. that was probably te highest Pak had scored in this format and even that against the most fearsome boling attack of the tournament. YET, YET we end up loosing. Feel like crying but you know what, I am proud of Pak today. I can certainly hold ,y head high even we lost. It was brilliance of one man who took i away from us. Sincere and best wishes to Aussies for the final now.

Posted by   on (May 14, 2010, 21:17 GMT)

loosing hurts for sure - but what i am proud of that Pakistan fought hard. Australia was better and they won it simple as that. both the deserving teams are in final now.

Posted by zizou313 on (May 14, 2010, 21:16 GMT)

what a dissapointing finish to the game ...i wish i could erase the last 2 overs from my memory. reminded me of the sydney test we lost and once again PAk's nemiesis was MR.Criccket. ...all i can do is applaud Michael Hussey. pak were brilliant but Aus proved to be just a little bit better. i would heavily criticize afridi and his field placing specially in the 19th over when he had left the leg side boundary empty. but no shame we had the aussies under real pressue and showed teams , specially India thas how u play aus

Posted by Sandgroper61 on (May 14, 2010, 21:13 GMT)

The man is a legend - how many have shown the ability to come back from a fallow period to play this well? I confess I'd thought he had lost it a year or so ago. Old rule: form is temporary, class is permanent. Astonishing. So glad, referencing far too many Pakistani comments over the past few days, that Australia doesn't have any class in her ranks. I'll add this, though: no Aussie fan ever, ever underestimates Pakistan. Too much proud history, too many class players. Fantastic game. Bring on England!

Posted by My_Beloved_Cricket on (May 14, 2010, 21:10 GMT)

I'm not an Aussie.. But I'm very happy to see Mr. Cricket to turn into Mr. Freak... Amazing stuff by the man named Mike Hussey... AWESOME performance!!!! Hail Mr. Cricket... Hail Mr. Freak...

Loss to NZ, Loss to Aus and win against Australia. Paakistaan has provided some of the best entertainment in the tournament. Thank you guys!

Posted by Mantan on (May 14, 2010, 21:08 GMT)

Wonderful match. Two mistakes by Pakistan. Spinner should not be bowling last over. Secondly we should have added a fast bowler in place of Misbah who did nothing in this match. Aus is going to be No. 1 team in T20 after being No 1 in test and ODI for such a long time.

Posted by calypsocricket on (May 14, 2010, 21:05 GMT)

Australia showed the world why they are a force to be reckoned with in world cricket. England will face a side that is bend on demolishing them. They will have to play like they never played before, and at this stage in the competition, it looks like they are only turning up because they have to.

Posted by wanderer1 on (May 14, 2010, 21:05 GMT)

Sometimes you can criticise Pakistan when they lose on all manner of things. Today they brought their 'A' game, played brilliantly and were just defeated by probably the best cricket team in the world playing at their peak. And Mike Hussey's innings was something exceptional, even in this day of massive hitting and slogging. Oh well, hope Pakistan can play like this in the forthcoming matches against Australia in England. As I've said you win some and lose some. And folks today, no you CAN'T BLAME THE PCB for this one.

Posted by   on (May 14, 2010, 21:04 GMT)

What a stunning innings from Hussey. Really brilliant cricket given he had Johnson on the other end for support. Unquestionably the best middle order saviour Australia has ever had,,,

Posted by N00dles on (May 14, 2010, 21:02 GMT)

As always with Australia! Its not over till the last ball. A great innings followed by an even better one. The look on the supporters faces at the end of the game was well worth watching as much as the last 5 overs were. Close..... but no cigar.

Posted by syedahmed91 on (May 14, 2010, 21:02 GMT)

Umer Gul was missed the most today, Pakistan still suprised everyone by scoring 191 against an australia which is pretty remarkable. At the end it was just about whose day it was and aussie have had a great tournament, Hats off the pakistani batsmen who proved everyone wrong today and gave their hearts. Can't wait for next years T20 world cup with Umer gul and a fit Sohail Tanvir in the bowling line-up.

Posted by khicoach on (May 14, 2010, 20:59 GMT)

I kept telling myself, if Pakistan win this won, we can avenge the losses of the entire forgettable season against the aussies.... but alas it wasnt to be.... hussey, man do i hate you!!! what an innings!!!

Posted by mc1987 on (May 14, 2010, 20:57 GMT)

Will all the big mouth Pakistanis return to cricinfo now and give credit to the Australians after declaring Pakistan were "certainties" to win? LOL. Your flukish luck RUN OUT - the better side in ALL formats of the game prevailed even after playing arguably its worst game of the tournament. No more bragging rights now for Pakistan!

Posted by starjay on (May 14, 2010, 20:56 GMT)

First of all congratulations to Australia for a brilliant win. This victory defines the phrase 'champions are not made but born'. Australians never give up until the final ball. Pakistan played well to give Australia some scare but their poor fielding and bowling cost them the game. I also thought Shahid Afridi's captaincy was poor with his handling of the situation. He shouldn't have entrusted a spinner to bowl the penultimate over. Even Shane Warne or Murali wouldn't have been secure in such a scenario. I think Afridi has to take the blame for this loss and I am sure he will because he is a gentleman. Pakistan can still keep their head held high because they were the only team to frighten Australia in this competition.

Posted by _NEUTRAL_Fan_ on (May 14, 2010, 20:54 GMT)

That's why no matter how much I wish for Aus to lose I can't help but wish that other test playing nations could emulate them. They prove yet again that their club structure is capable of spitting out class, crunch players who can win matches from any situation in ALL departments. If the bowlers don't beat u, the batsmen will and if they can't the fielders can do the job. They really have shown the rest of us how to build a proper, all-round, cricket team. The signs were there after the inaugural Champion's league in Ind where the 2 Aussie clubs played a great brand of cricket and 1 eventually won it in sub-continental conditions at that (supposedly was supposed to make it harder for them). The rest of us should have sat up and taken notice.

Posted by   on (May 14, 2010, 20:48 GMT)

I don't know when I had last given up hopes for an Australian side. But today I had looking at the stiff target. I closed my browser and had gone home for lunch. Just out of curiosity and formality I checked Cricinfo and was stunned as Pakistan to see the result. I am really sorry to have missed such awesome display of cricketing skills and calm from none other than "Mr. Cricket".

Posted by   on (May 14, 2010, 20:46 GMT)

No shame in losing after playing like this. Both teams played well; the Aussies were better, and that's that. What a game of Cricket though!

the greatest match in the history of T20 cricket. what a fight from both sides but hats off to Aussies on controlling their nerves in extreme pressure.

Posted by   on (May 14, 2010, 20:44 GMT)

Can't get better than this. Twenty20 at its very best. What a nail biting thriller by Aussies ? Such a treat for the cricket fans all across the world. Unbelievable late cameo from Michael Hussey lead the team to a miracle victory. Michael Hussey played an innings of his life and will surely remember this innings for years to come. Pakistan shattered in the bowling department and struggled to maintain the pressure till the end. England Lions watch out Spirited Kangaroos bouncing back
