ICC World Twenty20 - 24th match, Group E

India v South Africa

South Africa won by 12 runs

Hi there welcome to South Africa, the strongest team in the tournament, v India.

While we wait for the toss, here is something that we hope you would have fun reading.

Lasith Malinga collects tennis balls, cooks a mean curry and loves his mobile phone to bits. More about him in the Quick Singles interview.

Abdul Razzaq, Michael Jackson, and eighties-style allrounders all feature in Osman Samiuddin's back at the highlights from the last six days. Read it here.

Jon Guard, an England fan, reports on last night's game against West Indies, in Fan Following.

George Binoy misses the last train home but emerges smiling after a little smart work with a time-table and calculator. More in his diary.

Don't forget - you can tune into this match's commentary online via our live audio.

Toss South Africa will bat first. Smith: "We saw in the first game, it took a bit of turn. So we will bat first. The guys know it's an important week for us. The challenge in the tournament is each day you got to give the best. India have nothing to lose. Kallis has been rested. Morne Morkel gets in."

Dhoni: "We need to be at our best. We are not really part of the semi-finals. It's a test of character. We want to be at our best. When you do well, you get appreciation, when you don't do well, you get criticism. It's part and parcel of the game. It's India. We are playing with the same side."

Anil Kumble, in the Star Cricket studio, says he would have gone in for Pragyan Ojha on this spin-track. He reckons 160 is a defendable total here. Kepler Wessels reckons South Africa would want to win and take the confidence to the semi-final.

Manan: "I think Dhoni is just trying to prove that this side is good enough to beat the best of teams(RSA) in this tournament. Otherwise it just doesn't make sense to not play Ojha on this wicket. Even IK Pathan. "

Ankur: "Its funny how New Zealand, Australia, India, and England Woman making to semi's in ICC Women's World Twenty20 2009 and these same countries men team is out of ICC World Twenty20 2009 and the one who make semi's in man's are out in woman's "

The national anthems are on.

Asoka: "I beg to differ about your statement of South Africa being the strongest team, What about Sri Lanka?" Ah!

Prashanth: "I don't get it, in what way is Ishant a better choice then Irfan! Somethings wrong with the way Dhoni-Kirsten have been thinking right from the start of the series. Batting forms have been wayward! This team is a shadow of the '07 Champions, same bodies different souls! I hope they prove me wrong today! HOPE!"

0.1

Khan to Smith, no run, full delivery, outside off stump, Smith pushes it, bat away from his body, towards mid-off.

0.3

Khan to Smith, 1 wide, slips down leg side, Smith was on the shuffle and failed to connect with the glance and it just shaved past the leg stump. Oohs and aahs from Zak and Dhoni

0.3

Khan to Smith, no run, short of length and outside off stump, cut away to point

Abid: "what about Pakistan..with the 2 highest wicket takers in their ranks?" Great to see them playing the way they are doing right now. The tournament has really spruced up.

0.4

Khan to Smith, no run, length delivery on the middle and off, defended down the track.

0.5

Khan to Smith, FOUR, And Smith cashes in on the width. Two balls ago, he failed to put away, cutting straight to point but not this time. He cut it hard and past point for the first boundary

0.6

And this is Sriram Veera, your commentator for this game.

GC Smith    6* (6b 1x4)      Z Khan    1-0-7-0
HH Gibbs    0* (0b)

1.1

Singh to Gibbs, 1 run, high full toss on the off stump, pushed towards point and ROhit Sharma misses the run out chance. He missed the stumps at the striker's end and sMith was nowhere in picture. Smith is not happy with the call and shrugs at Gibbs

1.2

Singh to Smith, 1 run, full in length outside off stump, dabbed to third man

1.3

Singh to Gibbs, FOUR, lovely cover drive. Great to watch. This man can make batting look really easy, as they say. It was full and in the slot all right but Gibbs stayed still, remained adjacent to the line and caressed it through extra cover.

1.4

Singh to Gibbs, OUT, ah! the commentator's curse. He gets a fatal inside edge. It was a heavily packed off-side as Dhoni had moved an extra fielder after the previous four and Gibbs went for the leg side. Mistake. It wasn't all that short and it was outside off stump, Gibbs went for the pull and dragged it back to his stumps.

HH Gibbs b Singh 5 (7m 3b 1x4 0x6) SR: 166.66

1.5

Singh to de Villiers, no run, beaten on the drive. RP angled it outside off and Ab ended up chasing it

1.6

Singh to de Villiers, FOUR, What a feisty cut. It was slightly short and not all that wide from the off stump but Ab bent his knees to hold his balance and unfurled the horizontal shot to perfection. The ball raced to the backward point boundary

End of over 2 (10 runs) South Africa 17/1 (RR: 8.50)
AB de Villiers    4* (2b 1x4)      RP Singh    1-0-10-1
GC Smith    7* (7b 1x4)      Z Khan    1-0-7-0

Khan to Smith, FOUR, And Smith pings the cover boundary. Half-volley outside off and the burly South Africa captain shuffled a bit before he drove it through the gap.

2.2

Khan to Smith, 2 runs, cutting in towards off and middle but the angle coming in is enough for Smith to favour his favourite on side. He clips it past square leg

Magi: '"Praveen Kumar. Why are we not playing him? Not even against Ireland? What the heck!! India would have made lot of difference if we had him in Squad instead of Ishant for the series."

2.3

2.5

Khan to de Villiers, 1 run, full in length, moving away from AB who guides it to third man

GC Smith    16* (12b 2x4)      Z Khan    2-0-17-0

3.2

Singh to de Villiers, no run, on and around the off stump, full in length, steered to backward point region.

3.3

3.4

Singh to de Villiers, no run, shuffles towards off to tap the length delivery to backward point

3.5

Singh to de Villiers, 1 run, short in length, gets the bottom edge on the cut but will pick up a single to third man

Jimmy: "I cannot believe Cricinfo didn't pick-up on this. Millions of pages have been wasted on blaming India's batting. Has anybody thought maybe there is also a problem with the bowling as well. Ishant Sharma's T20 stats are (excluding 1 match against Bangladesh) is shameful: Matches 7, Average 93.5, Wickets 2, Strike Rate 64, and Economy Rate 8.76. This is the guy who was auctioned for a million bucks for the IPL. OPEN YOUR EYES SELECTORS"

Vignesh: "The Indian Cricket team players seriously need rest. They've been playing cricket without a break, and that has tolled onto us through this Cup. Guess this early exit though disappointing could give the players the rest they need. "

5.1

Jadeja to Smith, no run, floated outside off stump, driven to RP Singh at mid-off

Abhijit: "I dont think India played that bad in this series. Super 8 games were close, and the opponents outplayed us. I don't think it calls for BIG changes in the squad. All players in the team have great potential. We just did not play to our potential in this tournament. Cheer up guys, there is more to cricket than whinning about anearly exit. Vijay: "Why is so much fuss about who is selected and who is not? I am sure all these comments about selections and performances would not be there had India reached to semis. Its a game and someone proves better than others one day and not on other day. You cannot expect anyone to keep winning all the time. SA have finished on 130 for 5 on a big spinning slow track, quite unlike anything we have had so far in this tournament. Join us in a short while for the chase.

Vijay: "What I don't understand is why was the last over given to Zaheer when slow bowlersbowled much better! Sometimes, you feel that all captains try to follow the norms that frontline bowlers should always bowl the last one without thinking what is the best option under the circumstances."
