A graduate of Durham University, Freddie van den Bergh was released by Surrey at the end of the 2019 season after failing to make the step-up from second-team to First XI cricket.

A tall left-arm spinner who attended Whitgift School, van den Bergh made his first-class debut as a teenager for Surrey against Cambridge MCCU in 2011, and found his opportunities limited to early-season games for the majority of his time at the club. He played three 50-over games in 2014, but had to wait until 2017 for a Championship bow against Yorkshire, when he took four wickets.

But with Gareth Batty continuing to perform and Amar Virdi breaking through, first-team appearances remained at a premium. He played the Champion County game and one Championship fixture in 2019, as well as a couple of 50-over games, but spent most of the season in the seconds and was released at the end of the year.
