Warwickshire signed Alex Mellor, a wicketkeeper-batsman, on a one-year contract at the end of the 2015 season after promising form in the Second XI. He came to prominence by becoming only the seventh Staffordshire cricketer to score a double hundred in the Minor Counties Championship, with 208 not out against Suffolk in 2015 - and also set the county's record for dismissals in the same match by taking 11 catches. He spent time on loan at Derbyshire in 2016 and made his Championship debut against Leicestershire. Promoted to open the batting at the start of the 2017 Championship season, he was unable to take the opportunity - he averaged just 9.83 in three Championship matches across the season - and did not pass 20 in eight T20 appearances. When Warwickshire signed Micheal Burgess, another keeper-batsman, midway through the 2019 summer, it seemed Mellor's future at the club was limited and he was released at the end of the season.
