Dr Owen Rock was a slightly-built, fast-scoring opening batsman who played in five matches for New South Wales in 1924-25 and 1925-26 after attracting attention with constant success for Sydney University. He made an immediate impact, scoring 127, 27*, 235 and 51 in his first two matches, and he was rewarded with an appearance in the Test Trial. However, he subsequently qualified as a doctor and played no more first-class cricket. His maiden hundred was the first to be recorded on the famous Sydney scoreboard.

What probably counted against him was that his sucess came relatively late - he was nearing 30 when he made his debut - and he also suffered from bad knees, a legacy of strained ligaments resulting from dragging horses out of the mad in France during the Great War. With openings not coming, he opted to concentrate on medicine and practised in Newcastle for more than 30 years.
