Renowned for his aggressive batting and all-round qualities, Rafiqul Alam first played for Bangladesh in 1980. He represented Bangladesh in two ODIs in 1986 and also appeared in the 1982 and 1986 ICC Trophy. He last played for the national team in the 1992 ACC Trophy in Singapore. He has also appeared in representative matches for Bangladesh. Alam also served as a match referee with the Bangladesh Cricket Board and was also involved in coaching. He became the national chairman of selectors in August 2007, replacing Faruque Ahmed.
