Hambledon Cricket Teams

For more than two decades Hambledon was the premier club in the country, attracting the best players, patrons and large crowds. Established by Richard Nyren and centred on the Bat and Ball pub, throughout the 1770s and for much of the 1780s many major matches took place, initially on Broadhalfpenny Down and then on Windmill Down. The club went into decline with the establishment of the MCC in 1787 and by the end of the century was a shadow of its former self. The last match took place in 1824.
