Pete McKay showed impressive fortitude on his County Championship debut. The 18-year-old was Warwickshire's Academy keeper at the time and had suffered a broken finger. But, with Warwickshire blocked in their attempt to bring in a loan signing for the injured Tim Ambrose and unable to find a substitute, McKay offered to play and produced a ninth-wicket partnership of 88 with Jeetan Patel despite sustaining ruptured ankle ligaments towards the start of his innings. As a consequence, he was unable to keep wicket in the game, but he batted in both innings to help his side secure a draw.
McKay presented Warwickshire at every level from U10 upwards and represented Walmley in club cricket. He kept in the majority of Warwickshire's limited-overs games in 2013 but with Ambrose recovering form and fitness, struggled for opportunities in 2014.
With a reputation as a decent keeper and dogged batsman, McKay demonstrated his potential by thrashing 19 runs off five balls from David Masters in the last over of the Royal London Cup quarter-final against Essex to help Warwickshire win. But, limited in opportunity by Ambrose and injury, he was released by Warwickshire at the end of the 2015 season. George Dobell
