Sachin Tendulkar is among 13 personalities to be conferred the Padma Vibhushan, India's second-highest civilian honour.
Tendulkar, and Vishwanath Anand, the highest-ranked chess player in the world, are the first sportsmen to receive the honour in the awards' 44th edition. The Padma Vibhushan, which consists of a medal and a citation, is awarded by the president of India, and forms a part of the Padma Awards, which 'are given for exceptional and distinguished service in any field'.
Previously, Tendulkar has received the Arjuna Award (a national award for distinguished sports persons) in 1994, and in 1998 he received the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award, the country's highest sporting honour. The next year, he was the recipient of the Padma Shri ( the fourth-highest civilian award).
