Bangladesh: City emerge champs, beat Gopibagh

City Club emerged champions in the First Division League with a comfortable seven-wicket victory over Gopibagh Friends Association in their final super-league clash played at the Bangabandhu National Stadium yesterday.

Chasing a paltry Gopibagh total of 125 in 50 overs, middle-order Magsi and Munna shared an unbeaten century partnership for the fourth wicket to take City Club home with more than 15 overs to spare.

City Club lost their top three batsmen in just 11.1 overs with the scoreboard reading only 26. However, it was the fourth-wicket pair, who added exactly 100 runs to take their side home with out any further ado.

Magsi, the Pakistani all-rounder, who earlier took three wickets to help book Gopibagh cheaply, also proved his worth with the willow by scoring an undefeated 67 off 106 balls. His polished knock included a huge six and eight boundaries. Munna, on the other end, remained not out on 50 off 70 balls with seven fours.

Earlier, put into bat, Gopibagh were bundled out in 44 overs in the face of some fired-up bowling from pacer Ripon and Magsi. The couple evenly shared six wickets giving away 14 and 20 runs respectively. They were provided ample support by Uzzal, who returned with two for 28.

City Club, with yesterday's win, finished their 16-game league campaign jointly atop the 12-team table with Gopibagh, each having 14 wins. However, City Club lifted the championship by virtue of their superior net run rate.

Both City Club and Gopibagh have already qualified for next season's Premier league.
