ZIMBABWE CRICKET UNION PRIZE-GIVING
by John Ward
On Friday evening, 23 April, the Zimbabwe Cricket Union held its
annual prize-giving at Harare Sports Club.
The ZCU president Peter Chingoka made the opening speech, in
which he reviewed the country's most successful season since
gaining Test status in 1992. They won their second Test victory
against India at home, and followed this with a maiden series
victory in Pakistan. In one-day cricket they reached the final
of a triangular tournament in Sharjah, won a match in Pakistan
for the first time, and demolished all opposition in another
triangular series in Bangladesh.
Mr Chingoka also announced that the Mini World Cup in Bangladesh
at the start of the season had raised the sum of US$12 million
for the ZCU's development programme. He also said that the
Zimbabwe Cricket Academy would be competing in the Logan Cup next
season, raising the number of teams to four.
The individual awards for the past season were as follows:
Bob Nixon Trophy (most improved Under-21 player) - Andy Blignaut
Nick Benatar Trophy (Cricketer of the Year) - Andy Flower
Field Coleman Trophy (Administrator's Award) - Clive Barnes
Mr Barnes is the headmaster of Prince Edward School in Harare and
has done a tremendous amount of invaluable work in schools
cricket.
The Logan Cup was then presented to the Matabeleland captain
Andrew Whittall. Old Hararians Sports Club won the two national
club competitions, for both the league and knockout.
