New Zealand pulled off their highest World Cup run-chase to end a sequence of seven one-day defeats by Bangladesh, six of them in Mirpur. Set 289, they quickly lost McCullum and Williamson, for his first single-figure dismissal in 24 one-day international innings. Both fell to Shakib Al Hasan, opening the bowling with his left-arm spin and captain in place of Mashrafe bin Mortaza, who had a sore throat and a calf injury (and was also in danger of an over-rate suspension). But Guptill, who finished with 105 from 100 balls, and the circumspect Taylor, whose 56 consumed 97, put on a steadying 131; Taylor passed 5,000 one-day international runs in his 144th innings, a record for New Zealand. Then Elliott and Anderson contributed 39 apiece to help ease them to their sixth win out of six, with three wickets and seven balls to spare. Bangladesh had lurched to 27 for two against Boult, before Mahmudullah - dropped third ball at second slip by Anderson off Southee - engineered a recovery with the help of Soumya Sarkar. The New Zealanders called for repellent after a swarm of insects invaded the pitch, amid reports that the bugs had caused local pharmacies to run out of spray. But Mahmudullah's concentration remained unbroken as he became only the second Bangladeshi, after Shahriar Nafees against Zimbabwe in 2006, to score successive ODI hundreds. ANDREW ALDERSON
