Ruth Martin, New Zealand's first women's Test cricket captain, died in Christchurch last weekend. She was 90.
Martin, then Ruth Symons, captained New Zealand in their first-ever Test in the 1934-35 season against England. Interestingly, it also happened to be her only Test match since New Zealand did not play another Test until 1948.
However, she went on to tour New South Wales in 1938 when Ina Lamason captained the New Zealand team. Her name, though, will live on through the Ruth Martin Cup, awarded to the outstanding women's batsman at the annual New Zealand Cricket awards.
