ENGLAND v WEST INDIES

Toss: England

15-Apr-1993
Toss: England.

A convincing victory, with more than ten overs to spare, was England's eighth in succession in one-day internationals, and their fourth in a row over West Indies. Four top-order batsmen went for 55 runs while the white ball was moving prodigiously for the seamers. Lara, his toe still swollen, was hit on the box by Lewis's first ball and edged the second to Stewart. When Haynes, who had held firm for 20 overs, pulled to square leg, everything depended on Arthurton and Logie. The former obliged by driving and cutting to a fifty, though he offered three chances before giving Fairbrother a second catch; the same fielder had run out Logie, looking for a leg-bye when Defreitas appealed for lbw. West Indies' 157 was their second-lowest completed total in the World Cup. In reply, Gooch opened with complete confidence while Botham scored only eight out of 50 in the first 14 overs. Hick's 54 from 55 balls dominated the later innings, until he fell to a diving return catch by Harper, whom he had just driven for six through the covers.
