INDIA v PAKISTAN

At Singapore, April 5

15-Apr-1997
At Singapore, April 5. Pakistan won by eight wickets, their target having been revised to 187 from 33 overs. Toss: Pakistan.
Pakistan's win brought all three teams level on points, but they joined Sri Lanka in the final on net run-rate. The heavy rain which ended India's innings probably helped Pakistan; their revised target demanded a scoring-rate guaranteed to see them through, whereas before they needed to win with overs in hand. In fact, the aggressive Aamir Sohail and Saeed Anwar put on 144 in 20 overs, with Anwar scoring 74 from 49 balls, including three sixes off Raju, and Sohail steering his team home with five overs to spare. For India, Tendulkar led the way with a 111-ball century, his seventh in one-day internationals. But he got bogged down as he neared the landmark, and so did his side. Saqlain Mushtaq bowled impressively to choke them in the closing overs.
Man of the Match: Aamir Sohail.
