At Calcutta, December 28, 29, 31, January 1, 2. Drawn. New Zealand played themselves into a strong position on the first two days, and seemed likely to record the first Test win in their history. Then India, by strong batting in the second innings, fought back splendidly, and in the end New Zealand found themselves in danger of defeat. Early morning dew enlivened the turf pitch on the first day, and Reid, Hayes and Cave took such advantage of it that five men were out for 49 and India never recovered. A third wicket stand of 184 by Guy and Reid gave New Zealand a big advantage. Both batted attractively, especially Reid, whose century included fifteen 4's. When India went in again they mastered the moderate New Zealand attack. Roy and Manjrekar added 143 for the third wicket and Ramchand followed with a sparkling hundred, in which he hit fourteen 4's. India declared 234 ahead, with only 95 minutes remaining for play, but New Zealand were so troubled by Phadkar, Gupte and Mankad that they lost six men for 55. Then MacGibbon and Cave played out time.
