PAKISTAN v AUSTRALIA 1979-80

Toss: Australia

15-Apr-1981
Toss: Australia. Test debuts: Pakistan - Tausif Ahmed; Australia - G.R.Beard
Pakistan won a match dominated by the spin bowlers. Off-spinner Tauseef Ahmed - on his Test debut - and Iqbal Qasim made Australia struggle for their total of 225, after the visitors had elected to bat on a turning pitch. Their innings was given some respectability by Hughes, who batted three and threequarter hours for his 85, hitting one 6 and twelve 4s. Pakistan were in early trouble against Bright, but Taslim Arif and Javed Miandad initiated a recovery and, with Majid Khan hitting nine 4s in his four and a half hour stay, the home team achieved a promising total. On the third day Australia again had no answer to the spin of Qasim and Tauseef, ending the day only 23 ahead, having lost six wickets for 90. Despite a confident innings from Border, they were spun out for 140 on the fourth day, leaving Pakistan to score 73 for victory. Bright, again bowling effectively, took three wickets before the target was reached. Both Bright and Iqbal Qasim achieved career-best performances; Bright's match aggregate was ten for 111 and Iqbal Qasim returned figures of eleven for 118.
