New Zealand's draw threw up a familiar prospect: a semi-final against Pakistan, who had denied them a place in both the 1992 and 1999 World Cup finals. In Nairobi, though, the Black Caps avenged those defeats by pulling off a thrilling run-chase. Styris, a replacement for the injured Cairns, rounded off a seventh-wicket stand of 68 with McMillan by hitting the winning boundary. But New Zealand's innings was a collective effort: there were also star turns from Astle and Twose. Pakistan should have made more of a sublime hundred from Saeed Anwar, his second in four days. Their middle order imploded, then a promising tail-end revival was swept away by O'Connor's five wickets, the best haul of the tournament. Still, no chasing side had yet reached 250 in this competition. New Zealand got there with some help from substitute fielder Faisal Iqbal, who fluffed a crucial run-out chance against Styris.
