India v West Indies 2000-01

Toss: India

15-Apr-2002
Toss: India.

Asked to bat in difficult conditions again, West Indies concluded that attack was their only hope of success. Ganga and Gayle went for it with no half-measures, driving superbly in a daring stand of 86 at more than six an over. The astonished Indians had no answer. Ganga raced to 71 in 62 balls, and the later batsmen kept up the momentum, Hooper and Chanderpaul adding 108 in 19 overs. India's target of 291 looked well beyond reach once Tendulkar, who had a stomach upset, lofted his fourth ball to Ganga at mid-wicket. When the top five were dismissed for 80, three of them by the excellent Collymore, they seemed dead and buried. But they refused to lie down. Sodhi and Dighe launched a fierce assault that resulted in India reaching the final over with 25 needed. West Indies had taken their chances magnificently, but India lost with honour.

Man of the Match: C. D. Collymore. Man of the Series: S. R. Tendulkar.
