Sri Lanka v West Indies

At R

15-Apr-2003
At R. Premadasa Stadium, Colombo, December 11 (day/night). West Indies won by 49 runs. West Indies 4 pts. Toss: West Indies. International debut: J. J. C. Lawson.
Collymore, bowling with a new, open-chested action, turned the match with five for ten in 22 balls as Sri Lanka threw away their last six wickets for 17. Four were caught by Jacobs, only the third wicket-keeper to dismiss six victims in a one-day international. West Indies should have set a stiffer target: a run-a-ball stand of 74 between Ganga and Lara, who hit 60 in 53 deliveries, provided a sound foundation, and they entered the last ten overs on 209 for three, with Sarwan and Hooper well set. But they raised only 41 more runs as five wickets fell. Jayasuriya, who smashed an 86-ball 83, and Gunawardene opened with 92 in 18 overs, and Sri Lanka were on course until Collymore returned to inspire West Indies to their first win of a troubled tour.
Man of the Match: C. D. Collymore.
