Warwickshire 265 (Westwood 68, Warne 6-88) and 44 for 0 (Knight 39*) beat Hampshire 184 and 124 (Brown 49, Streak 6-31) by 10 wickets
Scorecard
Warwickshire surged to a two-day victory at Stratford as 18 wickets tumbled in the day. It is a far cry from the run-filled fixture here last season when only 22 fell in four days. The architect of Warwickshire's win was Heath Streak, who ran through Hampshire's second innings with 6 for 31, his best figures of the season. He grabbed the crucial wicket of Kevin Pietersen, caught by Jonathan Trott for a duck, as Hampshire crumbled to 34 for 5. Michael Brown and Sean Ervine tried to turn the innings around but Streak returned to mop up the tail and leave Warwickshire with the simple task of chasing 44. Nick Knight wasted no time, smashing 39 from 21 balls. Hampshire's capitulation was surprising after a morning session that involved a Shane Warne fightback. He claimed 6 for 88 and ran through Warwickshire's lower order as they fell from 140 for 1 to 265 all out. But that was just the prelude to Hampshire's own demise, and that one decided the match.
Kent 262 (Key 112, Hall 61, Bicknell 4-31) and 37 for 1 trail Surrey 324 (Clarke 124, Brown 56, Patel 6-124) by 25 runs
Scorecard
Rikki Clarke made his first century of the season but Kent were still very much in touch as an absorbing game unfolded at Tunbridge Wells. Clarke anchored Surrey's reply to Kent's below-par 262 with his 188-ball innings. His major stand was 107 with Ali Brown, who hit 56, and Clarke also added 99 with Jonathan Batty. However, the Surrey innings was kept in check by Min Patel, who sent down 38 overs of impressive left-arm spin, claiming 6 for 124. Darren Stevens' performance was a bonus for Kent as he chipped in with three wickets with his part-time medium-pace. Kent's battling performance lost some of the gloss when David Fulton fell late in the day to Mohammad Akram, and a crucial third day awaits.
Gloucestershire 250 (Weston 45, Adshead 45, Sidebottom 4-65) and 3 for 2 trail Nottinghamshire 469 (Hussey 98 Fleming 92, Hardinges 4-115) by 216 runs
Scorecard
Gloucestershire are starring at a heavy defeat after being asked to follow on by Nottinghamshire. The home side failed to build on an opening stand of 100 by Phil Weston and Steven Adshead, who is deputising for Craig Spearman as opener, and collapsed to Nottinghamshire's persevering attack. Ryan Sidebottom led the way with four wickets, including Chris Taylor, the Gloucestershire captain, for a first-ball duck. Mark Ealham built on Sidebottom's top-order strikes by picking up three lower-order scalps, while there was one apiece for Oliver Newby and Samit Patel. Several Gloucestershire batsmen got starts but failed to cash in, and they trailed by 219. The situation got worse before the close as Weston and Adshead were dismissed for the second time in a day, to Ealham and Sidebottom respectively, leaving Gloucestershire with a mountain to climb. David Hussey extended Nott's first innings before he was left stranded on 98 not out when Newby was bowled by Carl Greenidge.
Sussex 206 for 5 (Adams 72, Goodwin 67) trail Middlesex 401 (Joyce 82, Shah 58, Weekes 55, Kirtley 6-80) by 195 runs
Scorecard
Middlesex are in a strong position after the second day at Hove, but a battling partnership between Murray Goodwin and Chris Adams has ensured Sussex live to fight on. At 27 for 3 Sussex were on the verge of being played completely out of contention. Irfan Pathan had put in a fiery first spell in Championship cricket, removing both openers, and Alan Richardson chipped in with Michael Yardy. But Goodwin and Adams then combined to add 130 with some attractive strokeplay. Scott Styris eventually found the breakthrough, having Goodwin caught and bowled, to put Middlesex back in control when he bowled Chris Adams. Middlesex's tail had wagged effectively at the start of the day, boosting the total past 400 as they claimed a full hand of batting points. Pathan showed he is no mug with the bat, striking 41, and Melvyn Betts eked out 36.
