South Zone scored their second successive victory in the CK Nayudu
Trophy inter-zonal (under-19) cricket tournament at the AC Tech
grounds in in Chennai on Tuesday beating West Zone by four wickets.
Put in to bat, West were restricted to 206 for nine in 43
overs. Actually they made a good start with openers Parab (18) and PP
Joshi putting on 32 runs and then Joshi and Nk Patel (35 off 50 balls
with three fours) increasing the score by 72 runs during a second
wicket association that lasted 15.2 overs. Joshi who was run out for
76, faced 104 balls and hit five fours. PP Vora, with a gallant
unbeaten 41 bolstered the middle order but there was precious little
contribution from the others.
South's consistent batting saw them home with three balls to spare.
Openers BA Pai (22) and Amit Kumar (42) put on 51 runs in 12.3
overs. This was followed by a second wicket partnership of 49 runs off
11 overs between Amit Kumar and R Satish. Skipper YV Rao and NA Yadav
then brought South closer to victory with a fourth wicket stand of 45
runs off 6.4 overs. And finally Yadav and DS Doss (28) took South to
the doorstep with a brisk fifth wicket partnership of 45 runs off six
overs. Yadav's 46 was compiled off just 38 balls with two fours and
two sixes while Doss hit 28 off only 26 balls with five hits to the
fence. Rain interupted play twice during the West Zone innings
reducing the number of overs.
