On a Lahli pitch so green it was difficult to differentiate from the outfield, a brisk, unbeaten century from Virender Sehwag ensured Delhi ended day one on a very commendable total after a top-order wobble.

Haryana chose to bowl, and their seamers Mohit Sharma, Harshal Patel and Joginder Sharma snaked the ball around on the green track in the misty morning, quickly reducing the visitors to 41 for 4. Gautam Gambhir was out snicking Mohit behind for 21, before the equally experienced Mithun Manhas was lbw to Joginder for a golden duck. From thereon, however, Sehwag - who passed fifty for the third successive time in this tournament - and Rajat Bhatia battled it out and made it to lunch. They carried on after the break too, with Sehwag showing caution when necessary, but unafraid to hit the lofted shot down the ground when the opportunity presented itself. He was dropped twice as he neared his hundred - once in the slips and once at mid-off by Harshal. The pair batted out almost 46 overs, adding 186 runs, before Bhatia was done in on 72 by Harshal, who was captaining the injury-hit Haryana despite it being his first first-class game this season.

Haryana managed to break through with regularity after that, but they could not get Sehwag, despite him offering a couple of half chances. He will want to make it count on day two.

Pranay Sharma, playing his first first-class game in over five years, hit an unbeaten century to lead Rajasthan to commanding 295 for 4 against Punjab in Jaipur.

Punjab chose to bowl, and were buoyed straightaway, knocking over Vineet Saxena and Robin Bist for 0 and 1 respectively. Pranay, though, kept going, and found able partners in Ashok Menaria and then Rajesh Bishnoi. Pranay added 102 runs with Menaria, as the two steadied the innings, Menaria making 65. Then Bishnoi came in and counterattacked, hitting 67 off just 73 balls, with nine fours and two sixes. After his exit, Pranay began to build another partnership, this one with Puneet Yadav, and the pair had added 40 in an unbroken fifth-wicket stand by stumps.

For 26-year-old Pranay, playing only his fourth first-class game, this was a maiden hundred.

A team showing from Maharashtra helped them to a comfortable 320 for 6 by stumps on day one against Saurashtra, in Rajkot. After Maharashtra chose to bat, none of their batsmen could get to triple digits, but everyone got into double figures and three got past fifty to ensure the side finished day one in a strong position. Captain Rohit Motwani was the top-scorer on the day, with 70, and Harshad Khadiwale and Ankit Bawne also got half-centuries. Bawne was unbeaten at the close, on 52, and Maharashtra will be hoping he at least kicks on and converts his promising start into a score that helps bat Saurashtra out of the game on day two, on what is traditionally a good batting strip.

There was no play on day one of the match between Odisha and Vidarbha, played at the Veer Surendra Sai Stadium, Sambalpur, due to bad weather. The last inspection for the day, at 2.30pm, found the outfield to be too slushy for play, and so stumps was called without even the toss taking place.
