Zimbabwe v Afghanistan, 2014

Wisden's review of the first ODI, Zimbabwe v Afghanistan, 2014

15-Apr-2014
At Bulawayo (Queens Sports Club), July 18, 2014. First one-day international: Zimbabwe won by six wickets. Afghanistan 223-9 (50 overs) (Noor Ali Zadran 43, Samiullah Shenwari 65, Mohammad Nabi 54); ‡Zimbabwe 227-4 (45.2 overs) (Sikandar Raza 42*, B. R. M. Taylor 43, S. C. Williams 70, E. Chigumbura 39*). MoM: S. C. Williams. ODI debuts: D. T. Tiripano (Zimbabwe); Sharafuddin Ashraf (Afghanistan). Afghanistan found it hard to rotate the strike in the morning conditions: Noor Ali Zadran's 43 from 107 balls - he was eventually run out - was like something from the early 1990s, and they did not reach 100 until the 37th over. Mohammad Nabi (54 from 32 balls) and Shafiqullah (24 from 17) used the powerplay to inject some urgency, but Zimbabwe rarely looked troubled by the target. Sikandar Raza played aggressively for 38 before retiring hurt, and resumed his innings following an 85-run partnership full of positive running between Sean Williams and Elton Chigumbura.
