The sixth wicket stand of 19 runs between Neil Johnson and Guy Whittall in first innings was Zimbabwe's best for this wicket eclipsing the 17 run partnership betwee Andy Flower and Guy Whittall at Bulawayo in 1996-97.

Eddie Giddins (5-15) captured five wickets for the first time in his career.Giddins' average of 3.00 per wicket in Zimbabwe's first innings was the tenth best by any English bowler capturing at least five wickets in an innings. His average was the third best by an Englishman capturing exactly five wickets in an innings after Ian Botham (5-11 @ 2.20) and Gubby Allen (5-14 @ 2.80). The details :

Giddins became seventh bowler to capture five wickets in an innings on his first appearance against Zimbabwe after New Zealand's Dipak Patel (6-113), Pakistan's Waqar Younis (7-91 & 6-44), Wasim Akram (5-65) and Shahid Nazir (5-53), South Africa's Allan Donald (8-71) and Shaun Pollock (5-29).Incidentally the previous best figures by an Englishman on first appearance against Zimbabwe was 4 for 61 by Phil Tufnell at Bulawayo in 1996-97.

Giddins' figures were also the best for England in an innings against Zimbabwe. This obliterated Darren Gough's 4 for 40 at Harare in 1996-97.

England's total (415) was its highest against Zimbabwe. This obliterated the previous highest of 406 at Bulawayo in 1996-97.

Alec Stewart's innings (124*) was the highest for England against Zimbabwe obliterating Nasser Hussain's 113 at Bulawayo in 1996-97.

The hundred was Stewart's fourth as `keeper. Among the contempo-rary keepers only Zimbabwe's Andy Flower (7) has scored more hundreds in a career. In all time list, only Lesley Ames (8), Andy Flower (7), Jeff Dujon (5) and Alan Knott (5) are ahead of Stewart, while Johnny Waite and Ian Healy have also scored four hundreds each.

Stewart became the first `keeper to score two separate hundreds against Zimbabwe. His other hundred came at Harare in 1996-97 when he scored 101*. South Africa's Mark Boucher (125 at Harare in 1999-00) and Sri Lanka's Hassan Tillekeratne (116 also at Harare in 1994-95) are the others to do so.

Stewart became fourth batsman to score two separate hundreds against Zimbabwe. All other three are Sri Lankans : Sanjeeva Ranatunga (in 3 Tests), Marvan Atapattu (in 5 Tests) and Hassan Tillekeratne (in 7 Tests).

The fourth wicket stand of 149 runs between Graeme Hick and Alec Stewart was England's best for this wicket against Zimbabwe. This obliterated the previous record stand of 106 (unbroken) between Alec Stewart and Graham Thorpe at Harare in 1996-97.

Graeme Hick became third Englishman and 14th batsman to score a hundred on first appearance against Zimbabwe. The other two Englishmen to do so are Nasser Hussain (113) and John Crawley (112) at Bulawayo in 1996-97.

The eighth wicket stand of 20 runs between Stewart and Andrew Caddick was England's best for this wicket against Zimbabwe beating the paltry 9 run partnership at Bulawayo in 1996-97.

The 29 leg-byes in England's innings were the second most conceded by a side in an innings. It just failed to equal the Test record of 30 leg-byes which was set by England at Manchester in 1976. The details :

Heath Streak's figures (6-87) were the best by a Zimbabwean in an innings against England obliterating Paul Strang's 5 for 123 at Bulawayo in 1996-97

The tenth wicket stand of 31 runs between Bryan Strang and Mpumelelo Mbangwa in second innings was Zimbabwe's best for this wicket against England putting into shade the 4 run stand between Paul Strang and Henry Olonga at Harare in 1996-97. The partnership was also the fifth highest for Zimbabwe for this wicket against all countries.

Giddins' match figures (7-42) were the best by any Englishman against Zimbabwe putting into shade Phil Tufnell's six for 137 at Bulawayo in 1996-97. Andrew Caddick (7-66) and Darren Gough (6-93) also bettered Tufnell's figures.

Zimbabwe's two innings in the Test lasted for only 413 legiti-mate balls-the worst performance by any side in Test cricket for about 48 years. There have been 17 instances of a side facing less than 450 balls in two completed innings. The details:

The aggregate of 206 in two innings of the match was the lowest for Zimbabwe. This obliterated the previous lowest of 243 (102 + 141) against South Africa at Harare in November 1999.

The match aggregate of 621 for the loss of 30 wickets equalled the the lowest in a match involving Zimbabwe. The Colombo Test between Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe in 1996-97 also produced an aggregate of 621 (for the loss of 30 wickets).

The win was England's first by innings margin since February 1997 when it had defeated New Zealand by innings and 68 runs at Wellington. It was the 10th instance when England won a Test by innings and 200 runs margin.

The defeat was the second heaviest for Zimbabwe. It had lost to South Africa at Harare in November 1999 by an innings and 219 runs. Overall it was the seventh instance of losing a Test by innings margin for Zimbabwe.
