  • Umpires AV Jayaprakash and Dave Orchard officiated in their 6th and 20th match respectively.

  • CS Martin and BGK Walker made their Test debut. They became the 211th and 212th player to represent New Zealand in Test cricket.

  • Jacques Kallis (160) made his highest score in Test cricket. His previous best was unbeaten 148 also against New Zealand at Christchurch in 1998-99. Kallis' innings is also the highest for South Africa against New Zealand in South Africa. The previous record was in the name of Jackie McGlew who scored unbeaten 127 at Durban in 1961-62.

  • The seventh wicket partnership of 79 runs between Mark Boucher and Nicky Boje is a new record for South Africa against New Zealand in South Africa. This obliterates the previous best of 71 between MK Elgie and Peter Pollock at Wanderers in 1961-62.

  • The catch of Neil Mckenzie in the first innings was 150th for Adam Parore in his 64th Test. He became the second New Zealander after Ian Smith (168 catches in 63 Tests) to do so. Incidentally three of Parore's catches have been taken as fileder.

  • Allan Donald completed his 300 Test wickets when he trapped New Zealander Shayne O'Connor LBW in first innings. Donald became the first South African and only the 15th bowler in Test cricket history to do so. Donald is the third joint quickest alongwith Australian Shane Warne and after Lillee (56), Richard Hadlee (61) and Malcolm Marshall (61). Donald took 13690 balls (calculated upto the end of the innings) to reach this milestone which makes the second quickest in terms of least balls after Waqar Younis who sent down 12601 balls to capture his 300th wicket.

  • Stephen Fleming became the seventh New Zealander to be dismissed on 99 in Test cricket after John Beck (v South Africa at Cape Town in 1953-54), Richard Hadlee (v England at Christchurch in 1983-84), John Wright (v Australia at Melbourne in 1987-88), Dipak Patel and John Wright (v England at Christchurch in 1991-92) and Mark Richardson (v Zimbabwe at Harare in 2000-01). Fleming also became the ninth batsman to make a score of 99 against South Africa.

  • Fleming also became the sixth batsman to make a score of 99 while captaining his side. Others to do so are Englishman Norman Yardley (v South Africa at Nottingham in 1947), Ted Dexter (v Australia at Brisbane in 1962-63) and Mike Atehrton (v South Africa at Leeds in 1994), Pakistani Majid Khan (v South Africa at Leeds in 1994) and Salim Malik (v South Africa at Johannesburg in 1994-95).

  • Fleming top scored in both innings of Test for New Zealand. It was second such occasion for him. He had made 79 (out of 288) and 53 (out of 239) also against South Africa at Cape Town in 1994-95. Fleming became the third New Zealander to top score in both innings of a Test on two occasions after John Reid (thrice) and Bert Sutcliffe (twice). Overall it was the 17th such instance for New Zealand.

  • Fleming, with two 50 plus scores in the Test, extended his tally of fifties to 16 as skippermaximum for New Zealand. He was earlier at level with John Reid with 14 fifties.

  • Mkhaya Ntini's second innings figures (6-66) are the second best by a South African on first appearance against New Zealand. The best still remains Peter Pollock's 6 for 38 at Durban in 1961-62. It was also the first five wicket innings haul for Ntini. His previous personal best was 4 for 72 against England at Leeds in 1998.

  • South Africa enforced the follow-on on New Zealand for the fifth time. Overall it was the twelfth instance of South Africa enforcing follow-on on the opponents. On the other hand, it was the 37th instance when Kiwis were made to follow-on in a Test.
