- Umpires Darryl Harper and Simon Taufel were officiating in their 24th and 6th match respectively.
- Mark Waugh was playing his 200th match. He became third Australian after Steve Waugh (278) and Allan Border (273) and 17th player overall to do so.
- Lee brothers (Shane and Brett) were playing together for the first time in a ODI. This provided the fourth instance of two brothers playing in the same match for Australia. Steve and Mark Waugh have appeared together in a record 171 matches. Before them Greg Chappell and Ian Chappell have played together in 16 matches,while Greg and Trevor Chappell played together in 13 matches.
- The match also provided an amazing instance of two pairs of brothers playing in same eleven. It was the first such instance for Australia. - The partnership between Ricky Ponting and Michael Bevan was the 22nd partnership of exactly "99" runs in ODIs. It was the fourth such partnership by Australia and fifth against India. It was also the fourth such part nership for third wicket in ODIs.
- Saurav Ganguly scored his 10th hundred in 128th matchhis first against Australia.His previous highest against Australia was 72 at Kanpur on 07-04-1998.
- Ganguly became second Indian after Sachin Tendulkar (24) and tenth batsman in the world to score 10 hundreds in shorter version of the game at the highest level.
- Ganguly's innings (100) was the highest by any Indian on Australian soil obliterating Mohammad Azharuddin's 93* against Pakistan at Melbourne on 20-02-1985, Krish Srikkanth's 93* against Australia at Melbourne on 03-03-1985 and Azharuddin's 93 against Australia at Brisbane on 01-03-1992. It also bettered Sunil Gavaskar's 92* against Australia at Sydney on 21-01-1986, which was the highest score by an Indian batsman in a WSC / C&U match.
