Gary Kirsten when reached 27, completed his 5000 runs in ODIs. He became the second South African after Hansie Cronje and the 26th batsman in cricket history to reach this milestone. By taking 137 matches to do so Kirsten became the sixth quickest in terms of matches after West Indians Brian Lara (120), Gordon Greenidge (122), Viv Richards (126), Australian Dean Jones (131) and Indian Saurav Ganguly (131) to do so. However Kirsten by getting to this target in 137 innings became the sixth quickest in terms of least innings alongwith India's Sachin Tendulkar and after Viv Richards (114), Brian Lara (118), Gordon Greenidge (121), Saurav Ganguly (126) and Dean Jones (128).
Kirsten, on 71, also completed his 1000 runs in the year 2000-first batsman to do so this year. He was playing his 25th match and innings. Kirsten became the first South African and 11th batsman to accomplish this feat more than once.The previous such instance for him was in 1996 when he aggregated 1442 runs in 29 matches at an average of 57.68. India's Sachin Tendulkar has scored 1000 runs in a calendar year on four occasions (including three consecutive years from 1996 to 1998) and compatriot Saurav Ganguly three times (in successive years from 1997 to 1999). Others to have done so twice are West Indian Desmond Haynes, Pakistan's Aamir Sohail and Ijaz Ahmed, Australia's Mark Waugh and Ricky Ponting, India's Mohammad Azharuddin and Ajay Jadeja and Sri Lanka's Aravinda de Silva. Shaun Pollock with three wickets in this match now has a tally of 25 wickets in 14 matches against New Zealand which makes him the most successful South African bowler against New Zealand. The previous record was in the name of Allan Donald who has a tally of 23 wickets from 13 matches against New Zealand.
