Umpires Asoka de Silva and Gamini Silva were officiating in their 11th and tenth match respectively.

Virender Shewag suffered the ignominy of getting out to the first ball of the match. He became the fourth Indian to suffer this fate after Sunil Gavaskar (caught off New Zealander Richard Hadlee at Perth on December 9,1980) , Ravi Shastri (lbw to Pakistan's Imran Khan at Sharjah on March 22,1985) and Saurav Ganguly (bowled by Sri Lanka's Chaminda Vaas at Mumbai on May 17,1997).

Vaas became the second bowler to get a wicket off the first ball of the match on three occasions. He had earlier dismissed Saurav Ganguly (see above) and New Zealand's Chris Nevin (at Sharjah on April 17,2001) off the first ball of the match. The only other bowler to do so on three separate occasions is Australia's Craig McDermott. However it must be noted that McDermott took a wicket off his third ball (first legitimate ball) on one occasion. The other bowlers to get a wicket off the first ball of the match on more than one occasion are West Indian Andy Roberts, Pakistan's Wasim Akram and New Zealand's Chris Cairns with each performing this feat on two occasions.

Saurav Ganguly was dismissed for a duck after facing 16 balls. He missed the Indian record by just one ball. Eknath Solkar had taken 17 balls for his duck against England at the Oval on July 15, 1974. Incidentally the ODI record is held by West Indian Phil Simmons (0 in 23 balls) against New Zealand at Margoa on October 26,1994. The details :

With both Indian openers getting out without scoring, this provided the fourth such instance for India. The other occasions being : Sunil Gavaskar and Krish Srikkanth (v England,Ahmedabad,25-11-1981 and v Zimbabwe,Tunbridge Wells,18-06-1983), Manoj Prabhakar and Sachin Tendulkar (v WI,Mumbai WS,20-10-1994) and Mannava Prasad and Sadagopan Ramesh (v WI,Toronto,12-09-1999).
Dravid was dismissed stumped (off Jayasuriya) for only the second time in his career. The only other occasion being v West Indies (off Mahendera Nagamootoo at Bulawayo on June 30 this year.

Yuvraj Singh (98*) became the 13th Indian to make a score in the nineties. He also provided the 38th such instance for India. His innings was the second highest by any Indian in the nineties after Krish Srikkanth s 99 against England at Cuttack on December 27,1984 (Navjot Sidhu had also made 98 against West Indies at Sharjah on October 19,1992).

Romesh Kaluwitharana was getting dismissed without scoring for the 22nd time in his career and fifth time against India. He now enjoys the dubious distinction of aggregating most ducks in a career against India - five in 27 innings. Kalauwitharana was earlier level with four ducks with Pakistan's Shahid Afridi.

Kaluwitharana now has a duck frequency of 13.84 % of his total innings - highest for any batsman who has played at least 100 innings at this level. He bettered India's Javagal Srinath's record who has a duck frequency of 13.73 %. The accompanying table lists the leaders in this category of statistics :

Dharmasena, on 7,completed his 1000 runs in ODIs in his 115th match. He became the 15th Sri Lankan and 148th batsman overall to do so. With this, he also completed the coveted double of 1000 runs and 100 wickets. Dharmasena became the third Sri Lankan (Sanath Jayasuirya 6807 runs and 203 wickets in 241 matches and Chaminda Vaas 1015 runs and 205 wickets in 165 matches being the others) and 25th allrounder overall to do so.

Yuvraj won his second Man of the Match award.
