A South African stronghold

South Africa head into the second Test in Centurion knowing a draw will be sufficient for them to clinch the series against New Zealand. The hosts will also be confident considering their record at SuperSport Park, where they have lost just once in 12 matches.

South Africa's only loss in Centurion came in 2000 in a rain-affected game, when Nasser Hussain's England team triumphed after a couple of forfeited innings left them needing 249 to win on the final day. The Test later came under cloud following Hansie Cronje's involvement in match-fixing, where it was learnt the former South Africa captain received money for forcing a result.

The New Zealand bowlers suffered at the hands of Jacques Kallis and Hashim Amla in the first Test at the Wanderers, and they would not be encouraged by the fact that Kallis is the leading run-getter at the ground.

Kallis has performed well with the ball too at the ground, with 26 wickets at 24.23 apiece. However, Makhaya Ntini is the most successful bowler at the ground, with 43 wickets. Ntini is also the only bowler to have a ten-wicket haul in a Test in Centurion. His 10 for 145 came against New Zealand in the only Test between the two teams at the ground.

The team winning the toss or batting first doesn't have an advantage in Centurion.

The pitch at SuperSport Park has generally favoured the pace bowlers, with spinners averaging over 40 per dismissal.

New Zealand can only square the series, which means they still haven't been able to win a Test series against South Africa. New Zealand first faced South Africa in a Test series in 1953-54, and besides the 1961-62 series away and 2003-04 series at home, have lost all Test series they have played against South Africa.
