2007-08 HKCA Saturday League
Conditions were hot and humid around the territory as the 2007-08 HKCA Saturday League started on 1st September 2007 with five matches played in the opening round of the new format competition.
At Hong Kong Cricket Club, Aaron Stewart kicked off the season in grand style by scoring an unbeaten 136 for Witherers against Centaurs. Centaurs had posted a useful 249-7 from their 35 overs with Davies (51), Frith (50) and Chandrin (48) scoring the bulk of the runs, while Robson grabbed 3-69 for the HKCC team. In reply, Stewart led the run-chase, while Holcombe hit a valuable 35 as Witherers got home with six wickets to spare.
At Kowloon Cricket, Tartars also scored a six wicket victory over the Hong Kong Under-19s. Batting first, the Hong Kong Under-19s were restricted to 166-6 from their 35 overs with Sunny Mirchandani top scoring with 70 while Gurjant Singh finished on 40 not out. In rely, half-centuries from Afzaal Haider (57) and Shkawat Ali (87*) lifted Tartars to victory to a comfortable victory.
Two low scoring matches were played at Po Kong Village Road, with the long grass giving the batsmen very little reward for their efforts.
On PKVR1, Mainlanders enjoyed a 22 run victory over Laguna Gully. The Mainlanders team, comprising mostly Hong Kong Under-15 players, could only muster 115 in their innings with John claiming 4-20 for Laguna Gully. In reply, the Laguna Gully batsmen had no answer to Aziaz, who claimed 6-18 from 9 overs, and they capitulated for just 93 runs all out.
On the PKVR2 ground, Crusaders batted first against St Georg'es but they were restricted to a total of 137 all out from 34 overs. For St George's Shabaz grabbed 4-32 while Waqar claimed 3-19. In reply, Azam (57*) and Iftikhar (63*) avoided the long grass by taking the aerial route, as St George's ran out easy winners by nine wickets.
At Mission Road, Lamma beat Gap Ramblers by 26 runs. Ian Beck top scored with 55 and Brad Tarr hit 32 as Lamma racked up a score of 225-9 from their 35 overs, while Turner and Pearce grabbed three wickets each for Gap Ramblers. Mark Kratzmann led the run chase with 88 but his efforts were in vain as Gap Ramblers were restricted to 199-7 from their 35 overs. Tauseef Bukhari picked up three wickets for Lamma.
