Adams sustained the injury while practicing with the team at Queenstown, as reported by BBC Sport. He had just recovered from a broken finger in his left hand that sidelined him from the recently concluded Chappell-Hadlee series against Australia that New Zealand lost 1-2.

Adams has played 39 one-day internationals, with a batting average of 19.47. He has also taken 52 wickets at an average of 28.73.
