Allan Border a big hit in Papua New Guinea

One of the most recent initiatives introduced in the East Asia Pacific region is that of the ICC Cricket Ambassador. The idea is to attach two high-profile cricketers to the development program each year and to raise the profile of cricket in countries throughout the region in two ways. Firstly by using these personalities in media releases, certificates and other promotional materials, and secondly by organising visits to by the ambassadors to coincide with special events in member countries.
Border and Eade visited Papua New Guinea from September 28 to October 1. The visit was sponsored by Konica and, with the assistance of the PNG Cricket Board, a fantastic program was put together. In addition to meetings with the Prime Minister and a Governor-General's reception, there were also two fundraising events at which Allan spoke and memorabilia donated by the ACB was auctioned.
The local interest was huge with large newspaper articles each day and television coverage of the main functions. PNG Cricket Board officials Veari Maha and Wayne Stachell were delighted with the response and the increased profile for cricket as the season commences.
It is hoped Allan will be able to fit a couple of similar visits into his busy schedule each year while the announcement of a similar ambassador from New Zealand Cricket is eagerly awaited.
