Comments by Martin Crowe on the the NZ tour in Eng (25 Jun 94)
Martin Crowe was interviewed by Bryan Waddle for Radio New Zealand this morning. As usual the sensitive superstar was frank and honest with the media.
Crowe expressed his dissappointment over rumours from NZ that there is a rift in the Kiwi side. He said that all tour there had been just one real argument, and that had been made up the next day.
Crowe was most forthcoming on his relationship with coach Geoff Howarth. Professionally he said they had a lot of disagreements, because they have very different ideas on how things should be done, while because they socialize separately he doesn't really know Geoff Howarth the man. He seemed reasonably happy with Howarth's performance overall, stating that although he wasn't doing the best job that could be done, he was doing the best job that he could do. I hope that I haven't distorted what he said on that one.
Crowe was most complimentry of Rutherford's leadership, saying that he had really taken charge of the side after the first test debacle. He said that Rutherford is perfect for leading this promising young side, and he will not put his name forward for the captaincy while Rutherford is available.
Crowe is enjoying his role as "senior pro" in this happy side, and said that it is a great learning experience for him. He'd love to be part of it for the next 3-5 years.
