England, though, are still very much a side in transition in one-day terms, and after the captaincy shake-up, Kevin Pietersen will lead the team as well as in Tests. South Africa, much more accomplished in one-day cricket at the moment, are 4/9 (1.44) while England are 13/8 chances.

The series spans five matches, which either offers the chance for a close series, or for something of a humiliation, one way or the other.

Bet365 make South Africa just 6/1 to complete a 5-0 whitewash, which quite frankly, is a ridiculously short price. Yes, they are a better one-day side than England, but with Andrew Flintoff back and others with points to prove, England will be an improved outfit from the World Cup, for example.

It's just 5/2 that the tourists win 4-1 and only 2/1 that they win 3/2. If you think England can complete a whitewash of their own, then you can get 33/1 for them to win it 5-0. It is 17/2 that they win 4-1 and 3/1 that they edge it 3-2.
