Guptill made the first one-day international century by a New Zealander at Lord's, to secure victory with 19 balls to spare against an attack missing Stuart Broad and Steven Finn, both injured. Anderson had struck twice in his first over as New Zealand began their pursuit of a modest 228, but then Guptill added 120 with the fluent Taylor, cashing in against the inconsistent Woakes. He might have gone on 13, but Bresnan - a few yards in from the fine-leg boundary - could only palm a topedged hook over the rope for six. A pull for four sealed the win and made Guptill only the second New Zealander to score a one-day international hundred away to England (Mark Greatbatch hit two in 1990). Earlier, England's batsmen - adorned in a new red strip - resembled a procession of outof- season Santa Clauses bearing gifts under overcast skies. The most generous donation came from Root, bowled attempting a reverse sweep. Trott top-scored with 37, one of eight double-figure contributions, but Southee continued the form that had brought him ten wickets in the Test here a fortnight earlier. Luke Ronchi, who had played four one-day internationals for Australia in 2008, made his debut for his native New Zealand. His wicketkeeping was adept, but Anderson soon inflicted a third-ball duck.
