2006-07 HKCA Saturday League

Cool conditions prevailed on 20th January 2006 for the 16th round of the 2006-07 HKCA Saturday League.

There were plenty of runs and wickets in the two matches played at Po Kong Village Road. On the Number One ground LSW Warriors got the better of Gap Ramblers in a high scoring encounter. LSW Warriors batted first and they have Tabarak Dar to thank for them reaching an impressive 260-6 from their 35 overs as he smashed 138. In reply, Gap Ramblers made a brave effort with their chase but they eventually came up 33 runs short of the victory target. Trevor Tully top scored for Gap Ramblers with 48 while Jeremy Collard hit 47 while Jawaid Iqbal claimed three wickets for LSW Warriors.

The Warriors victory ensured they maintained their unbeaten record this season and returned them to the top of the Saturday League points table.

There was an equally impressive century by Najeeb Amar who smote 139 not out on the PKVR Number Two ground as Mainlanders thrashed Centaurs by 191 runs. Mainlanders nearly matched the LSW Warriors effort as they scored 259-9 from their 35 overs, with Neel claiming five wickets for Centaurs. Rafaqat Ali also claimed three wickets. In reply, Centaurs were routed for just 69 runs, with Yasar claiming four wickets.

Another century was scored at Mission Road where Krishnan top scored with 119 as SCC Vampires beat CCC by five wickets. Gary Wines led the CCC scoring effort with 52 not out as they reached 179-5 from their 35 overs. Satish was the best of the Vampires' bowlers, claiming three wickets. In reply, Krishnan's century was more than enough to see Vampires home for the loss of five wickets.

Home ground advantage and the return of Rahul Sharma could not stop Saracens slipping to their tenth defeat of the season as they fell to Laguna Gully by four wickets in a match played at Kowloon Cricket Club. Sharma led Saracens batting with his first century of the season (111) as they mounted a competitive 238-5 from their 35 overs. But a good team effort by the Laguna Gully batsmen saw them through to victory with Prashant Mehta hitting 69 and Prakash Chakavarti scoring 57 while Shekar Sharma finished unbeaten on 45 not out. Rahul Sharma claimed three wickets to complete a good day's work but his efforts were ultimately in vain. Anthony Correa also claimed three wickets for Saracens, though he leaked a whopping 82 runs from his 10 overs.

At the Police Training College in Aberbeen, the Police team enjoyed their fifth victory of the season as they beat MCC St George's by four wickets. Vaibhan Totla topped the St George's batting effort with 50 runs as the visitors reached 202-9 from their 35 overs. Khalid Khan scythed through the St George's batting line-up as he collected five wickets in a nine over spell. In reply, Danny Ishtiaq scored 72 runs as Police reached their victory target with six wickets down.

At the Sandy Bay ground, home team HKU were beaten by Lamma by five wickets. HKU's Bruce Abernathy led the way with 82 runs but they were dismissed for 150 runs with Butt Hussain claiming five wickets and John Gaffney picking up three. Lamma reached their victory target for the loss of five wickets.

Nomads completed a trifecta of victories over KCC teams this season as they beat Tartars by eight wickets to go with their victories over Crusaders and Saracens earlier in the season. Shkawat Ali was the best of the Tartars batsmen as he continued his recent good form by top scoring with 74 runs while Mohammad Azam hit 53 in Tartars total of 218-7 from their 35 overs. Michael Jamieson was the pick of the Nomads bowlers as he picked up three wickets. In reply, Chris O'Sullivan hit 93 not out and Andrew Swan scored 64 as Nomads eased to a comfortable victory for the loss of just two wickets.

2006-07 HKCA Sunday League

Only two matches were played in the Sunday League on another day of cool weather on 21st January 2007.

There was a thrilling match played at Mission Road where Templars pipped Pakistan Association by a solitary run in a relatively low scoring match. Jamie Atkinson was the best of the KCC team's batsmen as he scored 51 as Templars were dismissed for just 157 from 43 overs, with Butt Hussain the chief destroyer, claiming has second five wicket haul of the weekend. Hussain then top scored with 84 runs for Pakistan Association but his efforts were in vain as they fell short of their victory target by the slimmest of margins. Shkawat Ali was the hero for Templars as he claimed his first five wicket haul of the season as Pakistan Association were dismissed for 156 from 43.1 overs.

In another close encounter, Optimists extended their lead at the top of the Sunday League points table as they beat Scorpions by two wckets in an exciting HKCC derby match. Mark Kratzmann posted his first century of the season as Scorpions reached 236-6 from their 50 overs while Mark Edwards scored 49. Chris Gillard was the best of the Optimists bowlers, claiming four wickets. In reply, Ben Hart scored 66 and Tiku Patidar hit an unbeaten 78 as Optimists raced to victory in 44.2 overs. Phil Pemberton claimed three wickets for Scorpions.

There was no Sunday League action at Po Kong Village Road as the match was awarded to Sri Lanka Club by a walk-over against Vagabonds.

But cricket was played at Po Kong Village Number Two ground where HKCC Willow Wielders scored an emphatic nine wicket victory over the Sri Lanka Club. Betty Chan was the star of the show as she first claimed four wickets as Sri Lanka Club was routed for 55 runs and then hit 20 runs as the Willow Wielders strolled to victory for the loss of just one wicket.
