However, they were bowled out 20 runs short of the New Zealand total. Kiwi captain Stephen Fleming pointed to the run out of Brian Lara as the moment when the West Indies lost their way.

His team have sometimes been criticised for their method of relay throws to get the ball in from the boundary, but Fleming defended the technique.

"We believe that we can get the ball fast to the stumps, and have a more accurate shy at the stumps."

Had New Zealand lost the game, they would have been virtually out of the competition, but Fleming said that the team had not discussed the possibility of honouring the fixture in Kenya that they are prepared to forfeit on security grounds.

"A process is in place which is being handled by New Zealand Cricket, and as the players, all that we're doing is concentrating on getting maximum points in the matches that we play."

Andre Adams, whose parents are from the West Indies, was named man-of-the-match, after a fine all-round contribution. Adams scored a rapid 35 not out and took four for 44. He shared a partnership of 53 for the eighth wicket with Brendon McCullum that changed the shape of the match.

He said that he had a plan to settle in and then go for the bowling.

"The boys bowled quite well at me and didn't give me a lot to hit so I was just hoping that I could get a few at the end and I did."
