The good news for Gough fans (and England selectors) is that the injury appears to be a slight hamstring problem, and not a recurrence of the serious knee trouble that restricted him to just one County Championship match last season, and forced him out of last winter's Ashes tour without playing in any of the Tests.

Despite the loss of Gough, Yorkshire still managed to restrict Essex to 211 for 6 in their 45 overs. Tim Bresnan filled the void with 3 for 29 in eight overs, while Aftab Habib and Will Jefferson contributed a half-century apiece to Essex's total.
