The 27-year-old `Rawalpindi Express', as he is often known, is currently in South Africa for the World Cup but is thought to be interested by Hampshire's offer, which he is considering.

He is remaining with the Pakistani squad for a few days, but if he agrees to sign, will be flown to England later this month for a medical.

The reason for that is the speedster was due to sign for Nottinghamshire last season, but a persistent back injury saw him pull out. However, he has proved his fitness by taking 11 wickets in his country's fruitless World Cup campaign.

Shoaib, who broke the 100mph speed barrier in the group game against England, is exactly the kind of high profile player Director of Cricket Tim Tremlett had promised to replace Warne.

He said, "We have gone for a high profile player and we very much hope he will sign. He will be a very exciting addition to the squad, with his big reputation in the world game."

The Pakistani star has played 25 Tests for his country, taking 88 wickets at 27.18, while in the one-day game, he has competed in 81 matches, claiming 133 scalps at a margin over 21 each.
